Welcome to Bloomington!Bloomington – Normal is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in Illinois. Located in the center of rolling fields, you will see that the area is not only a great place to visit, but to live. You have no excuse for being bored with all of the different choices of attractions and entertainment, festivals, sporting events, restaurants, and shopping.

Both Uptown Normal and Downtown Bloomington feature unique retail shops and restaurants, as well as happening attractions and nightlife. While in Uptown Normal, you can visit the historic Normal Theater, which has been fully restored to its original condition and currently shows classic, independent and world cinema. While you’re in Uptown Normal, make sure you take time to check out the Children’s Discovery Museum. There, you will find three floors of unique, hands-on, larger than life exhibits including a 2,000 square foot agriculture exhibit. In downtown Bloomington, you will find the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, which is a recently renovated, historic theater that hosts over 400 performances and events each year. Also Downtown, you will find the McLean County Museum of History where you can explore, encounter, and experience the past through exhibits and programs about Central Illinois and its people.

We are sure that you’ll find something that appeals to everyone, whether it’s listening to the joyous sounds of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, watching a Bloomington Extreme Indoor Hockey game at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum, a family outing at Grady’s Family Fun Park, or enjoying a round of golf at one of the many area golf courses. Feel like a day of shopping? Visit the Eastland Mall that features over 90 in-line stores, then stroll over to the Shoppes of College Hills and visit over 25 specialty shops. Don’t forget about the unique shopping stores in the historic areas of both Downtown Bloomington and Uptown Normal.

Also, check out live theater on several stages including the Community Player’s Theatre, Heartland Theatre Company, the Miller Park Outdoor Theater, and the Normal Summer Theater. Don’t miss out on the live music events that are taking place at the Cefcu Center Stage at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, the U.S. Cellular Coliseum, and the Connie Link Amphitheatre.

Bloomington-Normal is going to be featuring festivals all summer long. Experience Shakespeare under that stars at the well-known Illinois Shakespeare Festival, which will be showing performances of Midsummer Night’s Dream, Scapin and Richard III. In July, Uptown Normal will hold the annual Sugar Creek Arts Festival, featuring over 130 artists from across the country. Later in the summer, stop by Uptown Normal to try out some of the best sweet corn cooked by an antique steam engine at the annual Sweet Corn Festival.

In 1900, the small community of Bloomington was hit by disaster. Late one night, a small fire started in the back of a downtown laundry shop. It grew undetected until the fire engulfed the building. Bloomington’s fire department rushed to the scene, but the fire, fueled by high winds, had already spread to adjoining buildings. The inferno proved too much for Bloomington’s ill-equipped fire department. The alarm was sounded in neighboring communities, with firefighters from Peoria and Springfield responding. Fire en-gines were even brought in by train from Springfield, but by the time the flames were contained, they had leveled the downtown community.

The citizens of Bloomington vowed that such a tragedy would never occur again. After buying the biggest and best hook-and-ladder team they could find, they realized it would not fit in the station’s bay doors. In 1902 they built the new Central Fire Station, which served as the main fire station of Bloomington until 1974.After sitting vacant for a couple of years, the building was remodeled as a restaurant. Its design was basically as it is today: the engine stalls are now the main dining room, the horses were kept in what is now our kitchen,

and the firemen’s quarters were remodeled into banquet rooms and a martini lounge. The present owners purchased the restaurant in 2004. They look forward to being able to continue Central Station Café’s repu-tation for warm and casual dining and maintaining our rich history.

At Central Station Café, they want your function to be memorable, as well as a great success. They will combine your planning assistance along with Central Station’s team to provide your guests with excellent service and professionalism. Their unique banquet facilities provide a variety of services to meet any re-quest and can accommodate up to 220 people. Offered, is a full range of menu items that will compliment any breakfast, lunch, dinner, buffet, or hor d’oeuvre party. Bar services are also available. For information regarding banquet services, call (309) 828-6563.

There are several unique qualities of the independently owned restaurant: a banquet directorwho will help customize your event as well as oversee the function itself and a talented Executive Chef who is able to consider any unusual requests. All of this located in an old historical firehouse with a classic Victorian setting. The banquet rooms come with a choice of white, rose or burgundy linen tablecloths, burgundy linen napkins, china, silverware, and Libbey Glassware with table centerpieces at no additional charge. All of the rooms are equipped with their own updated sound system for your convenience.Whether you are planning a wedding, business meeting, or other social gathering, please contact the sales and catering manager to handle all the details.

Loose Shoes is a variety band from Pekin, Illinois. It has approximately sixteen full and part-time members that specialize in live music entertainment for community events and private social functions. The band started as the brain child of Dr. Eric Reinertson, a local Obstetrician/Gynecolo-

gist. Originally, a smaller group of musicians were assembled to “jam” once a month or so, with some classic rock tunes and eventually play for the office Christmas party. Over the course of a couple of years, several musicians joined the band from various connections. Some have come and gone and the mix now includes about two more of everything; singers, keyboards, trumpets, guitars, saxophones, trombones, etc. Three of the members are local physicians, which occasionally gives rise to the name “the Doctors’ band”. This band has a strong rhythm section that is accented by a full brass combo and several exceptional vocalists. Classic rock covers and songs from the 1940’s to current hits are the predominant presentation material.

STRINGSDr. Eric ReinertsonDr. Reinertson looks back to high school, remember being asked if he wanted to play in a band. He thought that was a strange request since he wasn’t a member of neither choir nor band and has never played an instrument. He ended up agreeing anyway, bought a bass guitar and amp and memorized about 50 songs that were taught to him. Over the course of the last 25 years, Dr. Reinertson has been in many different bands. Until Loose Shoes, bass has been his primary instrument. He received a 1960 reissue Gibson Les Paul as a Christmas gift from his family and took a year’s worth of lessons. His focus is now on lead and rhythm guitar for the majority of songs and bass on a few others. “It is both challenging and rewarding for me to play and to organize this band. None of the previous bands have had as much diversity as this one and I truly enjoy this time away from life’s troubles. Every day is better when the music is playing.”Dr. Eric Reinertson is a Board Certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist in Pekin, Illinois at the Women’s Center for Health. He was born in California, raised in North Dakota and then went to Nursing School in Wyoming, where he met his beautiful wife, Betty.

Scott MungeScott, also known as “Scooter”, began playing in front of the public during his senior year of high school and hasn’t been able to be dragged off stage since. He has done solo acoustic, duets and various bands over the years. “Music has always been a release for me and has always been a big part of my life. It is the free flowing creative balance to my logical side,” Scott says of his passion for music. Scott says that being a part of Loose Shoes is unlike anything he has ever done before: “The variety of music is refreshing and the band is truly a family. We can lay down some serious music and have fun while doing it. With such a unique variety of people and personalities, average is never an option both on and off stage. Without a doubt, this is the most fun I’ve ever had playing music.”

Bunny BalabanMusic has always been a major part of Bunny’s life. Playing nearly a dozen instruments has allowed her the opportunity to play with bands, orchestras, jazz bands, quartets, and chamber ensembles. Bunny is a cello and violin teacher at the Pekin School District and keyboardist, occasional guitarist and vocalist for On Higher Ground (a contemporary worship band at Our Savior Lutheran Church). As a Massage Therapist,

she is continually looking for music that will promote healing and relaxation. Bunny adds that her music skills have been continually challenged since joining Loose Shoes in 2002. “The growth in the group, both in numbers and musically, has been phenomenal. Even though everyone in the group holds down a “day” job, everyone works hard to make the group and each other better.

Brian BenassiBrian enjoys being in band with so many talented people. He loves to sing and hopes the band will be around for a long time. He really likes their horn section and how it sets them apart from other area bands.

Randy Kohtz Randy started playing bass guitar when he was 13 years old and was immediately hooked. He has been in many rock bands since that time. Loose Shoes gives him an opportunity to work with others who enjoy music and to play a variety of songs that reach many different people. For the past 26 years, he has been a letter carrier for the Peking Post Office.

VOCALSDr. Adrian CordobaMusic has always been a big part of Dr. Cordoba’s life. He started playing trombone at age 9 and has played in a number of bands during both high school and college. As lead vocalist and trombonist, he is very excited about the bands future endeavors and has really enjoyed playing with them. Also vocal, Brian Benassi, Randy Kohtz, and Bunny Balaban

KEYBOARDSBill Bond, MD Loose Shoes is Bill’s first band since being in high school, not counting playing the piano in hotels, lounges and bars, while attending Medical School for extra money. He has had a lot of fun playing with the band. “I have a long way to go being a synth player instead of a piano player, so I need to learn more than I can learn quickly at my stage of life. Bill is an Eye Surgeon at Bond Eye Associates.

HORNSMary YoungMary has been playing clarinet since she was 10 and saxophone since she was 18. Music is her way of relaxing and having fun. She loves being in Loose Shoes: “Everyone is very nice and super fun and its fun being in a “cool” band”. Mary is a Medical Technologist at Graham Hospital located in Canton. She plays her clarinet and saxophone in the orchestra at Pekin 1st Church of the Nazarene and has been known to show her face in the choir from time to time.

Justin RileyJustin began playing music, with the trumpet, at age nine as well as playing in school bands, symphonic wind ensembles, church orchestras, brass quintets, marching bands, pep bands, and various jazz bands, continuing into college. “I am very much enjoying playing in Loose Shoes as all of our selections are from those two categories. And, after being away from playing for a few years, I had certainly forgotten how much fun it could be to play in a band. I am very thankful to this group for the opportunity to play and have fun again.”Also on horns, Greg Locke, “the Kid”, and Adiran.

The Illinois Symphony Orchestra is preparing for their 17th concert season and Maestra Karen Lynne Deal’s tenth. In 2008-2009, the Symphony performed such favorites as Dvorák’s “From the New World” and Holst’s The Planets, set to an amazing 3-D display. This year promises to be equally spectacular with a celebration of Mendelssohn’s birthday, guest violinist and rock star Rachel Barton Pine, a world premiere, and famed guest pianist Leon Bates. The season kicks off with two free performances guaranteed to get the audience excited. The Orchestra plays at the Illinois State Fair on August 17th, at Miller Park in Bloomington September 5th, and at Douglas Park in Springfield on September 6th. The concerts are the seventh annual “Pops in the Park” series. The concerts November 20th-21st will celebrate the 200th birthday of famous composer Felix Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn was a German composer who lived from 1809-1847. His most famous works include the score to A Midsummer Night’s Dream (from which springs the traditional wedding processional). The Illinois Symphony Orchestra will perform the entire score, as well as his Symphony No. 3 (or “Scottish” Symphony) and his Violin Concerto. Rachel Barton Pine livens up the stage on February 12th-13th for the “Valentine Surprise” concert. In addition to being an accomplished classical violinist since the age of seven, Pine also plays violin for her rock band, Earthen Grave. She has released or appeared on 14 albums and performed music ranging from Metallica to Brahms. The “surprise” part of “Valentine Surprise” features a Mystery Love Story. In March, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra has the honor of presenting a new work by contemporary American composer Judith Shatin. March 12th-13th will be the world premiere of Jefferson- In His Own Words, a mix of both orchestration and narration. It follows a tradition of inspiration from any source, as Shatin is known for including birdsong and animal calls in her compositions. April 23rd-24th brings another guest artist with the arrival of pianist Leon Bates. Bates is an American concert pianist who has toured all over the world. He is well known for his work bringing classical music to children through teaching and college lectures. Bates will be joining the Illinois Symphony Orchestra on two of Beethoven’s works. In addition to the more formal Masterworks concerts, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra is known for their fun Pops concerts. Pops I is on October 30th-31st, suitably Halloween themed, and Holiday Pops on December 18th-19th. There’s always something to see at Halloween Pops, since many of the orchestra and audience members come in costume. There is a costume contest for the children, who get to walk on stage and meet Maestra Deal. The “Home for the Holidays” Pops is always a favorite, with classic Christmas music as well as lesser-known pieces. The dedication these musicians have for the music comes through in every performance. The Illinois Symphony Orchestra is ready for an amazing season and to show Central Illinois how “It’s All About the Music.”

We invite you to visit our farm and learn first hand how fine quality cheeses are made. Explore our grounds, pet our pure bred prize winning Jersey calves. Then take a look through our 600 square foot retail store featuring a cheese slicing room with viewing windows, self-serve product coolers and full-service retail counter.

WHY JERSEY CHEESE? At Ropp Farms, we raise only registered Jersey cows. Jerseys are a breed of cows that have a beautiful smaller frame, are butterscotch in color, and produce a much creamier milk. This rich milk is due to a consistently higher protein and calcium content produced specifically by Jersey cows.

WHY ROPP JERSEY CHEESE? For 10+ years the Ropp Family has dreamed of starting an on-farm cheese processing facility and retail store. Formerly, production agriculture was a vital fabric to daily life. Now, many children don’t realize their milk comes from a cow and not just the grocery store. The Ropp Family would like to share their knowledge and farm heritage to not only educate the public but also promote agriculture as a vital industry to American life.

Ropp Jersey Cheese is proud to be the first in Illinois to feature a Cheese-On-Wheels®: An on-farm dairy processing plant from Darlington Dairy Supply. Our cheese making process is all done on-farm, in a self contained cheese processing facility. The side of the facility has a wall of windows for viewing and educational tour purposes. This facility and process is USDA and Health Department certified and approved.

The Ropp family would love to have your group come out to tour the farm. They offer working farm, cheese plant, retail store and educational tours, along with special event weekends. So come out and visit us at the farm.

Educational Field Trips• Children can watch cheese making, feed calves, milk a cow and learn how milk gets from the cow to the store. • Possible additional activities (weather permitting): making butter, hayrides, story time in the hay barn, tour of the farm and watch crop planting (spring only) or harvesting (fall only). • Each child would be able to sample fresh cheese curds and each child will receive an activity booklet. • Cost $3 per child. 15 – 20 children would be our suggested number. They can be divided into smaller groups for each activity. • Best time to see the cheese making is from 10:00 – 2:30. For more information, please contact Carol Ropp, Educational Director, at [email protected].

Professional Disc Golf Associationwww.pdga.com*Course Information, Directions and more!

With the incredible rise in popularity of ball golf, it’s no surprise that disc golf is also enjoying a similar -- if proportional -- rise in popularity. Disc golf offers many of the same pleasures: fresh air in a beautiful landscape, the camaraderie of friends, and the challenge and excitement of combining personal skill and speed to project an object toward a target. And perhaps best of all, disc golf is inexpensive. The only equipment you need is a flying disc, and most disc golf courses are located in municipal parks, which admit players for free or charge a minimal fee for daily or yearly access. Don’t expect to see many freestyle discs out on the course. These discs, commonly seen at the beach, will prove to be bulky and lack the distance you’ll want for driving. On the other hand, the sharper edges of a golf disc can be very painful if used for a game of catch! Traditionally dominated by 18 to 54-year-old males, the field of disc golf players has expanded greatly in recent years to include many women and families. Kids love it, it’s a cheap date and a great excuse to get a little outdoor exercise. Bottom line: disc golf can be big fun for everyone regardless of age, gender or economic status.

University Galleries at ISU

For forty years, Harold Gregor’s landscapes have captured, if not defined, the geometry and richness of the central Illinois countryside. Radiant Plains, on view at University Galleries from June 9th through September 13th, is a selection of paintings and watercolors from 2000-2009, including the new Left-Right Vibrascape series, which represents a bold, experimental shift in this renowned Midwestern artist’s work.

Gregor first received critical recognition in the early 1970s for his photorealist paintings of corncribs in the vicinity of Bloomington-Normal. During the same period he began the ongoing Flatscape series: brilliantly hued representations of croplands from aerial views. And in the 1980’s; he began exhibiting his well-known panoramic landscapes of Illinois farmlands, painted in intense realist detail.

Unlike Monet, who portrayed the dappled light over his pond and gardens at Giverny; Van Gogh, the sundrenched cypresses and vibrant flowers of Arles; or Frederick Church, the exotic vistas along the Andes, Gregor’s inspiration is a landscape generally considered as plain as its name implies. Taking a scientific approach, he bases his work on empirical evidence, photographing farmlands from private planes or out of car windows. His latest series of paintings, however—which came about literally by accident—are non-realist, expressionistic compositions with bold, sinuous outlines. Unable to paint right-handed after breaking his wrist, Gregor began painting with his left; then, after the injury healed, he painted right-handed versions of his left-handed efforts, resulting in the appropriately titled Vibrascapes. Born in Detroit in 1929, Harold Gregor received his B.S. from Wayne State University, his M.S. from Michigan State University, and his doctorate from Ohio State University. He taught at Illinois State University from 1970-1995, earning the title of Distinguished Professor in 1988. His work is represented in prominent public and private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe, including the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Filipacchi Collection in Paris. His Illinois Landscape #120 currently hangs in the Oval Office Private Dining Room at the White House.

“Rock the Red” will be the theme for Illinois State University’s 2009 Homecoming celebration, October 12-18. Events during that week will bring together students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members for events that celebrate Illinois State’s tradition and school spirit.Homecoming activities kick into high gear on Friday, October 16 with the first ever campus version of the Great Urban Race, in which participants trek through Bloomington-Normal, stopping at check points and completing tasks in an attempt to be the first to cross the finish line. A torchlight parade through campus, a bonfire, pep rally and the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen will take place that evening. The community will also get a sneak preview of the 2009 Redbird men’s and women’s basketball teams at Hoopfest in Horton Field House. The starting gun for the popular Town & Gown 5K run will signal the beginning of activities on Saturday morning, October 17. The entire family will love the annual Homecoming parade which features marching bands, fire trucks and floats constructed by a number of campus offices and student organizations. Following some pre-game tailgating, fans can watch as the Redbird football team takes on Indiana State. A black-tie optional Uptown & Gown Gala that evening at the Marriot Hotel and Conference Center in Uptown Normal will feature dinner, music and dancing.
