It Might Preach!

One Perfect Life

I received a copy of John MacArthur’s recent book, “One Perfect Life, The Complete Story of the Lord Jesus.” The book is a compos-ite harmony of the New Testament Gospels, blending biblical mate-rial about the Lord Jesus into a single continuous narrative. The objective is to bring into full view the One who is Immanuel, God with us, the Eternal Word made flesh, the pre-existent, coexistent, self-existent Son of God who became the Son of Man to die and rise again for our salvation. For believers, the full vision of the Lord Jesus is the supreme means by which we are sanctified—as we are enraptured by His glory and conformed into His image. For unbelievers, the full vision of the Lord Jesus is the supreme means by which they are to be saved from the penalty of sin and joined to the family of God. The Apostle Paul said, “for we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus’ sake” (II Cor. 4:5). This is a good word for every pastor, preacher and teacher in the church today. Of all the many things we can preach and of all the historical analysis we can give, may we never neglect the preaching of Jesus. Preach His life, His ministry, His death, burial and resurrection. Preach Him as He is...the way for those who have lost their way, the truth for those who’ve believed a lie and the life for those who are yet dead in their trespasses and sins (cf. John 14:6). Encouragingly Yours, Russell R. Cook

“Part II - A Portrait of Man in Salvation” Ephesians 2:4-9

In these first ten verses of Ephesians Chapter 2, Paul paints a verbal picture of a man (1) in SIN (vv. 1-3), (2) in SALVATION (vv. 4-9) and (3) in SERVICE (v. 10). Here, in verses 4-9 is a portrait of a man in salvation.

I. Man has but ONE SOURCE FOR SALVATION (v.4) A. The God of MERCY is his source. (v.4a) B. The God of LOVE is his source. (v.4b)

II. Man has but ONE PROVISION FOR SALVATION (vv. 5, 8-9) A. It is a provision made WHILE WE WERE SPIRITUALLY DEAD. (v.5a) B. It is a provision made BY MEANS OF GOD’S GRACE. (vv. 5c, 8a) C. It is a provision made THROUGH GOD’S WORK ALONE. (v.6) D. It is a provision made OURS BY FAITH. (v.8b)

This is the greatest need of any man, women or child in this world. Unfortunately, not every person is in this picture. Millions are, but mil-lions more are not. Every person not only needs to “get this picture” - they need to “get in this picture.” — rrc

A NUGGET FROM MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY… Sometimes God has a way of jogging our memories about a way in which He either spoke to us or He worked in our lives a really, really long time ago. Eventually we are able to look back and see what He was really doing back then. We sometimes call those “spiritual markers” and the longer we live, the more there are—or should be! I was recently re-minded of a college experience which I now look back upon as such a marker. At the end of 1969, I was privileged to attend a college confer-ence called “MISSION 70,” in Atlanta, Georgia, during the Christmas-to-New Year’s holiday. I travelled on a chartered bus with many other BSU students from Arkansas on that very long trip. While at “Mission 70,” 5000 students from all over the USA had the unique privilege of getting to learn and sing a brand-new song, “Here Is My Life,” led by its com-poser, Ed Seabough! What an awe-inspiring moment! That was the cap-stone of my entire experience at that very meaningful conference. As we travelled back from Atlanta to Fayetteville, I spent most of the trip just staring out the bus window, with the words to that song running through my mind and heart over and over! With every turn of the bus wheels mile after mile, that song planted itself in my heart. I could hardly wait to get off that bus and get started! I now look back and see how it has “played out” over and over in the 43 years since then in my life, in my own spiri-tual journey. The words will speak for themselves. Perhaps you can say it has been playing in and through your life, too???

Here Is My Life Lord, you placed me in this world of time and space and missiles hurled,

With eyes I’ve seen the ghetto gloom, With ears I’ve heard the sonic boom, And man cry out for breathing room,

I cannot wait, I cannot wait! REFRAIN

Here is my life, I want to live it, here is my life, I want to give it serving my fellow-man, doing the will of

God; Here is my life, here is my life, here is my life, here is my life.

Lord, you asked for all my life in healing hurts and ending strife, With mind to always seek the truth, With voice to always speak the truth,

and live to manifest Christ’s worth, I cannot wait, I cannot wait!

REFRAIN Lord, I give my life to You, my time, my talents, each day new,

With faith to witness to Your plan, With hope to gladly take my stand,

And love to minister to man, I cannot wait, I cannot wait!
