    Expandability andPower

The MELSEC FX family is highly flexible, enabling fast and efficient configurationand programming for the application athand.

It is the ideal choice, no matterwhetheryou need to install a simple controlapplication requiring 10 I/Os (FX1S) o r ademanding, complex system with up to384 I/Opoints (FX3U).

The use of memory cassettes can expandthe available programming space on some

FX Family PLCs while generally providing along term program storage option forallFX PLC users. In addition, memory cas-settes can alsoallow programs to beswitched at very short notice simply byreplacing the cassette.

There are five series in the MELSEC FXfamily, each of which is designed for adifferent application profile:

    The FX1S Series

The MELSEC FX1S series is theinexpensiveentry tothe MELSEC FX family. With itssmall dimensionsit is alsoan excellent

    alternative to relay/contactor controlconfigurations.

    The FX1N Series

The CPUs of the FX1N series offer morepower than theFX1S series, plus modularexpansion capabilities. You can choosefrom I/O expansion modules and specialfunction modules fora wide varietyofapplications.

    The FX2N Series

The FX2N seriescomplements the existingFX family. It gives you thefreedomofmodular expandability, with a wideselection of expansion modules andspecial functionmodules.

The FX2N is also one of thefastest PLC sys-tems available, witha cycle timeof 0.08 sper logical instruction.

    The FX2NC Series

The performance of the FX2NC is the sameasthat oftheFX2N series, but it has morecompact dimensions. It is the ideal choiceforapplications where little space is avail-able forthe controller.

    The FX3U Series

The FX3U series is the newest member ofthe FX family. It gives you thefreedomofmodular expandability, with a wideselection of expansion modules andspecial functionmodules.

The FX3U is the fastest PLC systems avail-able,witha cycle time of just 0.065 s perlogicalinstruction. This gives users apowerful CPUdelivering modularPLCperformance in a compact PLC design.

    TheALPHASeries

The ALPHA closes the gap between singlecomponents and a PLC system. It com-bines alladvantages of a PLC system in avery compact housing and thereforepro-vides a space and cost saving alternativeto relays and contactors.

The ALPHA series is suited to applicationsin industrial machines and in automatedbuilding services.

Key enhancements in the ALPHA2 includea program capacity of 200 function blocks,an extra-large display, expansion optionsand a second communications port. Theinstruction set, includes math operations,PWM and SMS text messaging functions. All this opens up possibilities foranalogand temperature control as well as remoteoperation.

    TheMELSECFXFamily

The MELSEC FX family includes a verycomprehensive range of baseand expan-sion modules, enabling you to configurea customised system tailored to yourprecise requirements.

Depending on your applicationand con-trol needs you can choose fromthe small,attractively-priced,stand-aloneFX 1Sseries, the expandable FX1N series or themore powerful FX2N/FX2NC and FX3Useries.

With theexception of theFX1S allFX seriescan be expanded toadapt them tothechanging needs of your installations andapplications.

Network integrationis also supported, making it possible for your FX controllersto communicate with other PLCs,control-lers andHMIs.The PLC systemscan becon-

figured as local stations in MITSUBISHI net-works. In addition these flexible units canalso be used as master or slaveunits onfieldbuss like Profibus/DP and CC-Link.

The MELSEC FX Family controllers alsosupport CANopen, DeviceNet andEthernet.

    SYSTEMDESCRIPTION ///

A basicFX PLC system can consist of astand alone baseunit, with the functio-nality and I/O range increased by addingextension I/O and specialfunction mod-

ules. The following sectionprovides anoverview of optionsavailable.

    Base Units

The entire FX PLC range can be AC or DCpowered with a mix of input and outputstyles. The PLCs can be programmed withthe user friendly GX or GX IECDeveloperprogramming software, allowing pro-grams to be transferred between differentFX PLCs.All PLC base units includean inte-gratedreal time clock.

Baseunits areavailable with different I/Oconfigurations from 10 to 128 points but

can be expanded to 384 points dependingupon the FX range selected.

    Extension Boards

Extension adapter boards can be installeddirectly into the baseunit and thereforedo not require any additional installationspace. For a smallnumberof I/O (2 to 4) anextension adapterboardscan be installeddirectly into the (left-hand side) FX1S orFX1N controller. Interface adapter boardscan also providethe FX PLC with addi-tional RS232 or RS485interfaces.Tocon-nect special function modles (e.g.Ethernetmodule) a communication adapterhas tobe installed.

    Extension I/OModules

Unpoweredand powered extension I/Omodules can beadded to theFX1N/FX2Nand FX3U PLCs.For expansion modules

powered by the baseunit, the power con-sumption has tobe calculated as the5 VDC bus can only support a limited number

of expansion I/O (for further details pleaserefer to next page calculation of thepower consumption).

Special FunctionModulesA wide variety of specialfunction modulesareavailablefor the FX1N, FX2N and FX3UPLCs.They cover networking functionality, analog control, pulse train outputsandtemperature inputs.

    Peripherals

Each FX PLC hasoptions for memory cas-settes, hand held programming units aswell as connection to HMI andGOT inter-faces.

The analog extension modules significantly increase the range of applications for theALPHA 2. With these modules it is possible to output voltageor current signals ortomeasure temperatures.

Three different analog extension modules are available:

The AL2-2DA offers two additional analog outputs for the ALPHA 2 and converts adigital input value into a voltage or a current. This module is inserted directly into theALPHA 2.Note: the AL2-2DA cannot be used with the AL2-10MR series.

The AL2-2PT-ADP connects an external PT100 sensor to convert temperature readingsinto analog signals (0 10 V).

The AL2-2TC-ADP connects thermocouple sensors (K type) to convert temperaturereadings into analog signals (0 10 V).

The addresses of the slave devices in the ASI interface are assigned either automatically

via the master in thenetwork or via a programming device (software). The maximum communication distance is 100 m without a repeater. If 2 repeaters areused, thedistanceis extendedtoup to300 m.

For the AS interface a separate power supply is required. The communication signal issuperimposed on the power supply of the AS interface bus.
