Equity Mindset in a Changing World
A central tenant of inclusive environments is that they are ‘inclusive of everyone’. In this workshop we will encourage you to really think about what we need to do to further develop our own ‘equity mindset for a changing world’.
This will require us all to check our unspoken, unnamed and unrealised biases and assumptions, and consider what really drives our practice. How do we respond to our changing world to challenge and broaden our thinking around any context for inclusion which could be age, gender, ability, culture, size, economic, appearance, family makeup….Our key question is: Are we expecting children to ‘conform’ to ‘this place’ or are we constructing environments that work for all tamariki and whanau.

Social Competency : Emotional Intelligence
Young children’s cognitive development occurs mainly in the context of social relationships –who learn from participating with peers and more skilled members of society. Not being able to initiate and maintain relationships is a source of anguish and loneliness, even for very young children.
There are many ways that early childhood teachers can help young children with their social development. We want to take a positive slant on this topic by not focussing on ‘managing unacceptable behaviour’ but on ‘developing a teacher’s tool kit of strategies and skills that will help young children develop their social competence’.

Supporting leaderful practiceLearning to be educational leaders who are equipped to support high quality and equitable education in New Zealand is a multi-faceted and complex process. In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on developing all teachers’ capabilities as leaders. In response to this emphasis, we will be using a cluster approach to provide PLD around building leaderful practice during 2019.Being involved in the cluster means:• Attending three workshops over the year, that are framed around the nine capabilities identified in the recently published Educational Leadership Capability Framework.• Undertaking a small inquiry around some aspect of leaderful practice.
