Use the following process for each paragraph:

1•Topic Sentence

•Necessary Background and Signal Phrase (with author's/source's name and a verb--refer to signal phrase resources on my webpage or in your folder)

•Direct Quotation, Paraphrase, or Summary (Be accurate! No sloppy copying!)

•Parenthetical Citation (Include the page number of the resource at a minimum, unless it is a web page source; refer to your notes or the online resources.

•Commentary (At least two sentences; avoid "The evidence proves the thesis because..."-->get that weak stuff outta here)

Signal PhrasesIntroduce direct quotations, paraphrases,

and summaries from your research.Includes the author’s name and/or

source name, (usually)a verb, and then the quoted, paraphrased, or summarized information from your source.◦According to the [insert name] website,

“-----.”◦Author [insert name] suggests, “------.”◦ [Insert author’s name] reports, “-----.”

Parenthetical CitationsComes after the cited material at the end

of the sentence. Includes at least a page number and might

also include the author’s last name or part of the title of the source if there is no author.

Information from a webpage WILL NOT include a page number—n.p.

Information from an article from an online newspaper or magazine or an article from a database WILL include a page number.

Signal Phrase + ParentheticalMaterial quoted from Maclean’s, a magazine

source found on a database:◦ Nomi Morris reports, “The anti-child labor

group that Craig [Kielburger] and some friends launched with a garage sale has grown to an international movement that its members hope will do for youth what the women's movement did for women” (1).

Material quoted from the About section of the Free the Children web page:◦ According to the Free the Children website,
