What do religions say about corporal punishment?
For Muslims corporal punishment is permitted as part of shari’ah law. ‘As to a thief , male or female, cut off his or her hands; a punishment by way of example from Allah’ (surah 5:38) Flogging in Islamic countries is used as punishment for adultery, drinking alcohol and fornication. It acts as a deterrence and punishment in this life is seen as better than punishment in the afterlife. However some Muslims reject corporal punishment and see it as outdated and cultural.
