She is the author of more than 20 books and the recipient of countless awards and honors. Sanchez has lectured at over 500 universities and colleges in the United States and has traveled extensively, reading her poetry in Africa, Cuba, England, the Caribbean, Australia, Europe, Nicaragua, the People’s Republic of China, Norway, and Canada.

Walter D. Greason, Ph.D. Dean – Honors College, Monmouth University Greason’s research focuses on the comparative, economic analysis of slavery, industrialization, and suburbanization. His recent online resource, the Racial Violence Syllabus, attracted worldwide attention at the peak of the controversy surrounding the “Unite the Right” rally at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Translated into seven languages, it reached more than 4 million direct users and drove the public debate surrounding the removal of Confederate memorials across the United States in venues as varied as National Public Radio, The Atlantic, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Bob Graham was elected governor of Florida following 12 years of service in the Florida Legislature. During two successful terms as governor, he was nationally recognized for reforms in education, environmental protection, and economic diversification. Upon concluding his two terms as governor, Graham had an 83 percent approval rating from the people of Florida. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1986, serving three consecutive terms. As a member of the Senate Finance, Environment and Public Works, and Veterans Affairs Committees, Graham was a leader on health, trade, tax, water and infrastructure issues. He continues his work in environmental protection as chair of the Florida Conservation Coalition and leads efforts to enhance citizen engagement and train the next generation of public leaders through the Bob Graham Center for Public Service at the University of Florida.

Chris Hand is a Florida attorney who advises clients on how to improve their long-term outcomes with government. He has a long record of civic and public service. Hand previously served as speechwriter, press secretary, and campaign press secretary for Senator Graham. In 2008, Hand served as one of 27 Florida electors in the United States Electoral College. From 2011 to 2015, he served as Chief of Staff at the consolidated City of Jacksonville, Florida, the largest city by area in the contiguous United States and the 12th largest city by population. In that role, Hand managed Mayor Alvin Brown’s office team with oversight for policy, advocacy, communications, outreach and scheduling. He graduated with honors from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and the Fredric G. Levin College of Law at the University of Florida.

On behalf of all of us at the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community, Inc. (P.E.C.) -- my colleagues on the Board of Directors, staff members, volunteers, donors, sponsors and collaborative partners, I welcome you to the 29th Annual Zora Neale Hurston™ Festival of the Arts and Humanities (ZORA!™ Festival).

ZORA! Festival 2018 will be another outstanding program, even more so because this festival will kick off our organization’s yearlong celebration of our 30th anniversary. Appropriately, our theme will explore the “Cultural Arts & Community Action Connection.

As I begin the second year of my term as board president, I am making a personal appeal that you join me in the effort to “Protect and Preserve the ZORA! Festival Legacy! Throughout our event, our organization will be featuring aspects of the the year-round work which make the ZORA! Festival the nationally-recognized cultural heritage tourism that it is and asking you to make an individual investment. Our goal? We are honored to welcome the 29th Annual Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities and its guests to Rollins College. In partnership with the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community (PEC), we are especially pleased to continue hosting the civic conversations that began at last year’s first Communities Conference and to see their expansion into areas such as the arts and exploration of the promise of collaboration-the best exercise of community.

These dialogues are a natural extension of our mission’s focus on citizenship and leadership, and our work with PEC is an instance of Rollins’ guiding institutional principle of community in active practice. Our association has its roots in Rollins’ relationship with Zora Neale Hurston, which dates from the third decade of the 2Qth century when she became friends with the College’s legendary eighth president, Hamilton Holt. Their friendship yielded the first production of Hurston’s From Sun to Sun, here at Rollins, and introductions to Rollins faculty members who would assist in promoting her writing career.

Clearly, the power of relationships can be consequential, and we are grateful for the opportunities offered by PEC and this continuing conference to build productive connections in our communities in the 21st century. We hope you find your time on our campus-and at the many offerings of the ZORA! Festival-to be enlightening, constructive, and rewarding.

As Mayor of Orange County, it is my sincere pleasure to extend a warm welcome to allattending the 29th annual Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities, also affectionately known as the ZORA! Festival. The ZORA! Festival is an exceptionalcollaboration of art, culture, tourism, and economic development, and we are proud to share what we have here in Orange County with the world.

It also gives me great pleasure to welcome the 2nd Annual Communities Conference: Civic Conversations Concerning 21st Century American Life in Communities of Color. I applaud the ZORA! Festival and Rollins College for bringing together local and national thought leaders, community activists, and scholars for this important dialogue which will give the opportunity to build a stronger understanding of each other, and also foster relationships that will allow the conversation to continue into the future.

For those who call Central Florida home, I encourage you to take advantage of every event and opportunity offered throughout the conference. And for those who are visiting, I urgeyou to see and explore everything that our region has to offer. You will quickly discover why we are the number one vacation destination in the nation. Conference Background: In recognition of the 130th anniversary of the Incorporation of Historic Eatonville (August 15, 1887), known popularly as “the oldest incorporated African American municipality in the United States,” ZORA! Festival 2017 organized the “Communities Conference: Civic Conversations Concerning 21st Century American Life in Communities of Color” to explore issues and concerns which occur, over and over, in communities of color and to determine ways of improving the quality of life for those persons who reside in them.

The response was so positive that the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community, after consulting with a number of constituencies, determined to continue the conversations.

Conference Structure: In an opening plenary session and 75-minute breakout workshop breakout sessions, conferees will interact locally and nationally-recognized thinkers and community-based activists on topics, including personal finance, education options, community economics,

cultural vibrancy, community wellness, and civic engagement.

Shyriaka “Shy” Morris, Founder PEACE ARTS For over two decades, “Shy” Morris has led the effort in the Daytona Beach area to provide spaces for creative education options. Anthony B. Major, Program Director, University of Central Florida (UCF), Zora Neale Hurston Institute for Documentary Studies Major is a veteran professional of film, television and theater. His career spans three decades of directing, acting, teaching, and producing. Among the many distinguished members of the entertainment industry with whom he has worked are James Earl Jones, Eddie Murphy, Robert DeNiro, and Sidney Poitier. Focus: Harry Belafonte

Lizette Valarino, Owner, The Idea Factory A 30-year resident of Orange County (Florida) Valarino was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico and completed her degree in elementary education in Caracas, Venezuela. Trudy Wild, External Grants & Research Specialist At United Arts of Central Florida for the past 18 years, Wild brings her commitment and experience to the area as an arts and cultural professional with more than 35 years in administration, project management, systems, research and analysis. Wild manages the grant programs of Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs as its fiduciary and coordinates research projects to document and prove local and regional arts and cultural vitality, economic impact, best practices in grant making, advocacy and capacity-building.
