06-12 September 2018 Dear Parents, Teachers and Students, It is almost the end of the first term and that marks the end of the first quarter of the academic year. At the blink of an eye, I am into my fifth year with the organisation and rightly deserve the accolade as the longest serving principal of NationalHigh Jakarta School. I like to maximise this right to share some thoughts with everyone. First, let the children learn by failing. What do I mean? I noted that without fail on a daily basis, such as lunch boxes, books, homework and files being sent by drivers and parents to the reception to be sent to their children who had forgotten to bring these items, will our children ever learn to be responsible for themselves? It will take a long time if there is always the possibility of a safety and people to clean up the mess for them. Let them learn by facing the consequences. Let them go hungry for the day. They will learn. I believe they will truly learn when we exercise tough love. They will learn to be responsible and also learn that there are always consequences when they do not take responsibility. Second, limit the access to technology. In and outside of school, children who are accessing technology are getting younger and younger. They are our digital natives, born into an era where technology is changing at a faster pace than anyone could keep up with. I believe the children need time to socialise and play, not indulge in a personal relationship with their gadgets. They are losing the ability to write neatly and have good penmanship. They type better than they write. I believe the younger they are, the more they should learn socialising skills and have time to play and sweat it out. I love to see the children run and play at break time (now that it is increased to 30 mins) and see how they resolve their interpersonal issues in a civil way because they are friends. Third, trust the children. I have seen how many children had stepped forward and took on responsibilities and performed at a level that exceeds our expectations. This is evident when they took on acting roles in musicals, led assemblies with students planned and written skits to teach values or even in social enterprise such as the Brunch Bar. Keep trusting in them and encouraging them. Our support by not saying “NO” to them is far better than any monetary or material support for their lives. They will also learn to pay it forward and always be kind to others. Last, read to and read with the children. Reading is a way to bond with the children. Whether reading the holy books or a simple novel, by doing things together, we are bonding with our children. I only had one night every week where I got to read for my children a bed time story. I found it to be the best thing to do with them, stirring their curiosity, their ability to ask questions and most of all, stretch their imagination. If parents communicate with their children at least every night, this will be the best bonding you will have with them. Influencing them with a suitable verse from the holy books or an inspirational piece from a story, this is how values will be build and a part of us start to grow in them. I hope my personal reflection will be helpful. How’s your last five years? Mr Ang Hwee Khoon Principal >> SCHOOL CALENDAR (SEPTEMBER) Please note and be informed what’s on at NHJS. >>SUSS – PIAGET Impact Start-Up Challenge 2018 (17-22 September 2018) PIAGET Academy was founded in 2002 with a vision to Create a Better World Through Education. The mission of the schools in PIAGET Academy, namely NHJS (Jakarta) and SNA (Surabaya) focused on holistic education and preparing the students to be values-driven leaders for the future. PIAGET Academy under the leadership of his Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr William Yiu, entered into a strategic partnership with Singapore’s latest public

university, Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) to create learning opportunities for the students from both parties. An inaugural six-day SUSS-PIAGET Impact Start-up Challenge marks the first partnership project between the two institutions and this involves students from Singapore and Indonesia working in teams to pitch their business ideas. A unique feature of the camp is a strong focus on social enterprise and business ideas that will uplift communities. A select group of panelist comprising industry leaders, investors and SUSS staff will judge the business plans and investors are at hand to plough funds into their pet projects. Members of the judging panel are: Wesley Yiu (Cocoon Capital), Andreas Surya (Kejora Ventures, G-Startup Worldwide), Keith Tan (Wonderlabs) Part of the camp involves visits to start-ups and market surveys by the participants of the camp. The teams will also be mentored by executives from start-up companies as well as staff from SUSS. >> Secondary 4 & JC Fieldtrip: Asian Games 2018

The above snapshot is a taste of one of the many adrenaline-filled events in the Asian Games. We are filled with pride for our country, Indonesia, to host one of the most anticipated and multicultural events, the 18th Asian Games. The security inside Gelora Bung Karno is tighter as compared to past events held and spectators are not allowed to bring in foods and drinks from the outside to prevent littering of trash and maintain the stadium’s cleanliness.

Expectations were met especially considering the short preparation time.

Newly renovated stadium

‘Wisma Atlet’, athletes’ village, built in 510 days An area of improvement we noticed is in the ticketing. Resellers who wish to distribute tickets should be certified. Securing tickets is quite difficult, often selling out online which does not make sense especially when you see the empty seats on the other side of the stadium.

Considering all the opportunity costs, we think it is worth all the sacrifices as the event is historical and a platform for Indonesia to showcase our culture, our talents and our hospitality. It is a venue to show the world how far we have grown economically as well. The benefits outweigh the costs.

ASIAN GAMES 2018 opening ceremony

We interviewed another spectator to confirm our reflections on the Asian Games and this is what she has to say: Yes, I am proud that the 18th Asian Games is being held in Indonesia, the last time Indonesia hosted Asian Games was in 1962, so being able to witness Indonesia host Asian Games is something I am proud of. I noticed that the organizers made sure that the court was filled with places to put big name companies so that the event does not exhaust a lot of funds of the organizers, they sought sponsors and had places to put advertisements. e.g. barriers between the court and the spectators. My expectations are definitely met.

For improvement, I think they should add more food vendors near the stadium. As well as a more comprehensive direction guide as to where this bus will take you or which bus to take to get to another stadium.”

With another spectator/interviewee. Written by: Aileen & Matthew (S4G)
