Dear Families:

Thank you to everyone who supported our Peak of the Market fundraiser in October. To-gether we raised over $400. As well, the Show and Save App is still available—drop by the office if you wish to purchase one or have questions about it. Our next fundraiser, the Cash Calendar, will be run by our parent council. We really appreciate those families who are able to support our fundraisers as they provide crucial funds for our Healthy Snack program, upgrades to technology and support various student activities.

During this past month some of our Ukrainian Bilingual program students attended Keno Fest (movie) and toured the Legislature; Mr. Karpenko transformed the gymnasium into “Halloween Gym” complete with obstacle courses and fun activities; and Hip Hop Dance Club and Intramurals have started up over the noonhour! We are excited to once again be running the Roots of Empathy program, in which students from Room 106 have the op-portunity to be involved in the growth and de-velopment of a baby’s first year of life. Our ba-by this year, sibling to Kendra and Jurell, is Baby Logan.

Student learning continues to thrive in our classrooms as we continue to work towards our literacy, numeracy and social emotional targets. Staff continued their growth by collab-orating with division “specialists” and attend-ing the province-wide Professional Develop-ment Day on October 25th.

During the month of November we remember those who fought for our freedom in the past and for those who today continue to contribute to our freedom and a more peaceful world. Our Remembrance Day service will take place on November 8th at 9:30 am in the gym. Par-ents/Guardians and families are welcome to attend.

I look forward to returning this month and spending more time with our students, staff and families.

IPAC: INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

MAP of CANADA

In the months of September and October, Ralph Brown School was lucky enough to have the Indigenous Peoples Map of Cana-da sprawled across our gym floor! This giant map was a part of our continued commit-ment at Ralph Brown School to Reconcilia-tion through Education. Staff and students were lead through a series of lessons and activities, ranging from languages and com-munities, treaties, residential schools, histo-ry of colonization, hunting and trapping, tra-ditional teachings and mapping. All students from K-8, spent a minimum of 3 hours, learning about this content and much more! Watch for this map again in the Spring!

Staff took part in the Blanket Exercise and were educated on using the IPMC during the October inservice day.

New Changes in Asthma Management

Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways that causes symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. Muscles on the outside of the airways tighten and the inside of the airways become more swollen and make more mucous. When you have asthma, the inside of the airways are always a little bit swollen. Good control of asth-ma can be achieved by avoiding known triggers (colds, pets, tobacco smoke, pollens) and using the prescribed asthma medicines.

For years, Reliever medicines (eg Ventolin) have been prescribed as first line treatment for symptoms for those with mild asthma. Reliever medicine is used for symptom relief and works by relaxing the muscles on the outside of the airways. Recent studies have shown that reli-ance on a Reliever alone for symptoms can have bad effects. It can lead to worsening of asthma and more frequent emergency room visits. If more than 12 canisters of a Reliever medicine (Ventolin, the blue puffer) are used in a year there is a higher risk of death from asthma. Patients often rely on their Reliever because of it’s quick action , its low cost and people often feel they do not need any further treatment. The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has recently published new recommendations for treatment of mild asthma. Their goal is to pre-vent asthma flare-ups and asthma related deaths. GINA now recommends adolescents and adults with asthma should receive a combi-nation medicine having both a fast acting Reliev-er plus Controller as the preferred choice for asthma symptoms.

It is no longer recommended that we treat asth-ma with just a blue puffer. An option would be to use regular Controller medicine to decrease the risk of worsening symptoms. These are recom-mendations and it is important to work with your doctor to make an Asthma Action Plan that will work best for you.

SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS - EMERGENCY

PROCEDURES

The School Board Chairperson, in con-junction with the Chief Superintendent, makes the decision when emergency school closures are needed. The follow-ing radio stations will announce clo-sures: CBC, 92 CITI FM, 99.9 BOB FM, CBC French, CJOB, 1290 CFRW, QX 104 FM, CKJR Power 97, 102.3 Clear FM, Q94 FM, Hot 103 FM, City TV, CTV News, or check the Winnipeg School Division website for notices.

Note that when school buses are can-celled the school remains open and holds classes as usual. COLD WEATHER

We wish to remind parents to check before their children leave the house to see that they are properly dressed for the cold weather (mitts, toques, boots and warm jackets). All children from Grades 1-6 go out for recess un-less the temperature with the wind chill is below –27C.

There have been requests from par-ents/guardians to keep sick children in at recess. Although we would like to have all students at school all the time, we are unable to provide supervision for children who are ill. If your child is too sick to go out for recess, it may mean that they are too sick to attend. COLD & FLU SEASON

Children who are sick require REST and PLENTY OF LIQUIDS in order to get well. It is important that children know how germs are spread. Teach them to WASH THEIR HANDS OFTEN, cough or sneeze into their elbow or a tissue and not to share food or drinks with other children.

Grade 5/6 boys and girls will be playing in the Winnipeg School Division Co-ed Volleyball Tour-nament on November 29th at Machray School from 9:00-12:00. Practices will begin in early November.

Koats for Kids

Please take a few minutes to check the size/condition of your children’s winter clothing (jacket, ski pants, boots, mitts, toque, etc.) to ensure they have adequate clothing for the winter.

Ralph Brown School will be placing an order the first week of November with “Koats for Kids” for any families in need of outdoor clothing. Let us know as soon as possible if you would like us to place an order on your behalf.

ZONES OF REGULATION

One of our goals this year is to meet the social/emotional needs of our students. This year we will continue to use the Zones of Regulation to help us with this and to develop common language when helping students self-regulate.

Self-regulation is something everyone contin-ually works on. We all have situations that test our limits from time to time. If we are able to recognize when we are deregulating, we are able to do something about it to feel better and get ourselves to a better place. This comes naturally for some, but for others it is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced. This is the goal of The Zones of Regulation. Here is a quick look at The Zones:

Over the last month, I have been going into several classrooms to teach about The Zones. Parents, I encourage you to talk to your kids about The Zones of Regulation and give them an opportunity to share what they are learning with you! Mrs. Opalko Guidance Counsellor

ROOTS OF EMPATHY This year at Ralph Brown School, I will be teaching P4 a program called Roots of Em-pathy. Roots of Empathy is a program that has shown dramatic effect in reducing levels of aggression and violence among children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. Throughout the year, we will watch baby Logan grow from 2 months of age until just before his first birth-day. Each monthly visit is based on a different theme. They are: · Meeting the Baby · Crying · Caring and Planning for Baby · Emotions · Sleep · Safety · Communicating · Who am I? · Goodbye and Good wishes

In October, our focus was Meeting the Baby. We can’t wait to see what the year has in store for us! Stay tuned! BLUE ZONE

October was a very busy month for Room 107 students. The entire class had opportunity to travel to Chief Peguis Junior High to meet oth-er English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program (EUBP) students and watch the Ukrainian made film "The Stolen Princess" and enjoy snacks as part of the 6th Annual Kino Ukrainian Film Fes-tival. The Kino Film Festival is a Ukrainian film festival held in Winnipeg annually. The Stolen Princess is about Ruslan, a wandering artist who dreams of becoming a knight. He meets Mila and falls in love with her. However, an evil sorcerer kidnaps Mila so Ruslan sets out to rescue her.

On October 30th the grade 5 students from Room 107 joined all grade 5 EUBP students
