Gospel Reflections for November 2019

3 November - 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

It is not uncommon to see a parent lift their small child onto their shoulders, particularly where there are crowds. Anyone who is small will relate to the frustration which comes from not being able to see over the heads of those much taller. In today’s Gospel, Zacchaeus, a small man in stature, climbs a tree because he wants to see Jesus. The encounter that Zacchaeus has with Jesus transforms him. He sees with a new perspective. Climbing the tree has given him a different way of looking at things – a new vision. In the same way Jesus who came ‘to seek out and save the lost’ has been successful in his own seeking. He has found Zacchaeus who was lost but is now found. All of us can lose our way at times in life. Sometimes we just need to climb a tree to find a new perspective on life, to see and experience things differently. As we go through this week let us give some thought to the way we live our life. Is Jesus calling us to have a change of heart or a change of being? As with Zacchaeus, the outcome of making such an effort to seek a different way, will be great joy and communion.

10 November – 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

November is traditionally the month when the Church reflects on the significance of people we have loved and who have died. Specifically, this weekend, we remember all those who have died in war. It can be a painful time for anyone who has experienced the death of someone close to them. Fundamental to our Christian belief is that Jesus rose from the dead. Alongside this we believe and trust that after our own death we will rise again. The Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection and so tried to ridicule belief in it. Jesus cuts through their question highlighting that God is a God of the living; not of the dead. This is a certainty of faith which gives meaning to our own life and enables to trust that we will meet again those we love and have lost, not on this earth, but in the fullness of life with God.

17 November - 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time All forms of media give us instant access to the horrors which can unfold around the world. Concerns about climate change, wars around the globe and increasing knife crime in our own country are all possible causes for us to feel anxious about the state of our world and concerned about the future. Yet our liturgy today has a very strong message which encourages us not to be afraid, but to trust in God. We are to hold firm in faith, bearing witness to the hope which are belief gives us. Christ dwells with us, we

are not alone. Let us proclaim this for all who have no faith that they may see in us the trust we have in God’s abundant love and care for us.

24 November - Feast of Christ the King Today our Church gives a special focus to the young people of our parishes. It is National Youth Sunday and the theme for their day comes from ‘Christus Vivit’ The Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis to young people, ‘For him, you have worth; you are not insignificant. You are important to him, for you are the work of his hands. That is why he is concerned about you and looks to you with affection’ (CV115). When Jesus is nailed to the Cross two criminals hanging by him, respond in different ways. One taunts him telling him to save himself if he is a king. Jesus is not interested. He is not concerned with power – he lived and died for the world because he could see the worth in every human being. To Jesus everyone is significant. The second criminal sees and understands this. He seeks mercy from the Lord, and it is immediately given. So many young people, today, do not feel that they have any worth but the more they come to know that they are loved by Jesus, the greater the possibility that their sense of worth will grow. Perhaps today we can make a commitment to building up our young people, seeing their worth and assuring them of our love, as Jesus himself offers.

This is my hope

This is my song, O God of all nations, a song of peace for lands afar, and mine. This is my hope, the country where my heart is. This is my hope, my dream, and my shrine. But other hearts in in other lands are beating with hopes and dreams that are the same as mine. My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean, the sunlight beams on clover leafs and pine; but other lands have sunlight too, and clover, and other skies are just as blue as mine. O hear my prayer, thou God of all the nations, a prayer of peace for other lands and mine. Author unknown, from a prayer treasury

A TIME OF REMEMBRANCE

At this time of year our thoughts turn to Remembrance Sunday and to those who fell in the two world wars of the 20th century and all wars and conflicts since. Families still remember relatives and friends who had their lives cut short in these terrible conflicts. We also remember those who were physically and mentally afflicted for the rest of their lives. We often overlook the animals that died at the same time. Eight million horses, countless mules and donkeys died in the First World War along with elephants, camels, carrier pigeons, and many other animals. However, it is the sacrifice of the horses, mules and donkeys that we would like to remember on this occasion. Tom and Pat are putting together a display in the church from 6th November.

Annual Donations to the Parish Secretary Account. (This message does not apply to people who donate to the Parish Secretary Account monthly by standing order). Last year I was very late in reminding people that make annual donations to the above account, that donations were now due, which is why it may seem to some that the year has gone very fast. If possible could people, who donate annually to the Parish Secretary account, make a donation now if they have not already done so.. Cheques should be made out to: "Our Lady of Lourdes Pastoral". Thankyou

Over October we had over 100 prayer intentions

placed in the offertory. Some drawings and some

written, we will pray into them over the next couple of

months. May God bless and answer them.

December (3rd Sunday of Advent) Sarah Rowe is organising a

JUST A SIMPLE SOLDIER

© 1985 A. Lawrence Vaincourt He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast, and he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past. Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done. In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, everyone. And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors, his tales became a joke, all his buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke. But we'll hear his tales no longer, for ol' Bob has passed away, and the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today. He won't be mourned by many, just his children and his wife. For he lived an ordinary, very quiet sort of life. He held a job and raised a family, quietly going on his way; and the world won't note his passing; 'tho a Soldier died today. When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state. While thousands note their passing, and proclaim that they were great. Papers tell of their life stories, from the time that they were young, but the passing of a soldier, goes unnoticed, and unsung. Is the greatest contribution, to the welfare of our land, some jerk who breaks his promise, and cons his fellow man? Or the ordinary fellow, who in times of war and strife, goes off to serve his Country and offers up his life? The politician's stipend and the style in which he lives, are sometimes disproportionate, to the service he gives. While the ordinary soldier, who offered up his all, is paid off with a medal and perhaps a pension, small. It's so easy to forget them, for it is so long ago, that our Bob's and Jim's and Johnny's, went to battle, but we know. It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys, who won for us the freedom, that our Country now enjoys. Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand, would you really want some cop-out, with his ever waffling stand? Or would you want a Soldier, who has sworn to defend, his home, his kin, and Country, and would fight until the end? He was just a common Soldier and his ranks are growing thin. But his presence should remind us, we may need his like again. For when countries are in conflict, then we find the Soldier's part, is to clean up all the troubles, that the politicians start. If we cannot do him honor, while he's here to hear the praise, then at least let's give him homage, at the ending of his days. Perhaps just a simple headline, in the paper that might say: "OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, FOR A SOLDIER DIED TODAY."
