Athletes in Training

8th grade students ONLY

Students will learn different high-level weight training and cardiovascular exercises. Students will participate in circuit training and form running.

Board Games

6th and 7th grade students ONLY

Students will interact with one another through playing various board games.

Brain Games

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will learn to play and engage in friendly competition of cognitive and skill-based computer games approved by Common Sense Education.

Bullet Journaling

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Creating an analog system in a digital age. A bullet journal allows students to create and be organized. It is a do-it-yourself planner and journal.

Career Exploration

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will learn about various career categories and specific careers within each category.

Chess

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will learn how to play chess and engage in games of chess.

Coloring

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will relax and color! Students will color high-interest color sheets and/or in coloring books to promote a calm, relaxing environment.

Crafting for the Community

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will create a variety of craft projects for the the community. Such projects may include: no-sew blankets for the homeless, hats for newborns, scarves and toys for the animal shelter, as well as bracelets for patients at St. Jude’s.

Creative Curriculum Club

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will create hands-on artworks that connect with and express their understandings of various content areas. We will bring other school subject topics into our ideas for artworks that will then be given back to the school building and staff.

Creative Handwriting

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

This club will focus various styles of handwriting, fonts, and creative lettering. Students will have the opportunity to learn and practice calligraphy, zendoodling, and cursive signatures.

Creative Writing Club

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

This club offers the opportunity to express yourself through various pieces of writing throughout the year. Join us, and explore the beauty of writing creatively!

Crossword Puzzles

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will compete to finish crossword puzzles while also increasing their vocabulary knowledge.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

7th and 8th grade students who have not previously participated in this club ONLY

Students will be introduced to the field of crime scene investigation by Union County crime scene investigators. Students will learn how to solve mysteries using an online CSI program.

DECA, Jr.

8th grade students ONLY

An extension of WHS DECA that will focus on assisting 8th grade students who are interested in preparing for the business world through various leadership and community service opportunities.

Digital Photography

6th and 7th grade students ONLY

Students will learn the basics of digital photography, including how to take and edit photographs.

*A student-supplied digital camera is required.

Disc Golf

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will learn disc golf rules and strategies. Students will practice and play on the WMS disc golf course.

Drawing for Beginners

6th grade students ONLY

Students will learn how to draw fun and basic landscapes, as well as other objects. Students will learn the step-by-step process to draw a different masterpiece each month.

Explore Diversity Through Books

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will read a book and then do activities the following months that are based on the book read. For example, we may make a movie trailer for the book or connect with someone from the country where the book is based for a virtual field trip.

Film Study

8th grade students ONLY

Students will study the components of cinema with the goal of being able to create their own short film by the end of the year.

Forensic Science

8th grade students ONLY

Learn about the use of Forensic Science techniques in criminal investigations.

Harry Potter

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will explore the world of Harry Potter books. Students will discuss book excerpts, solve puzzles, and compete in trivia activities.

Helping Hands

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will assist those with special needs at WMS by helping them complete various various hands-on projects and crafts.

Improv Club

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Come experience life off the top of your head! Learn to think quick and act out scenes with fellow cast members, making it up as you go along.

JROTC

7th and 8th grade students ONLY

In WMS, JROTC students will learn the same leadership qualities that are instilled in each US Marine throughout his or her training. Our students will apply these same traits to their everyday lives. Such traits that are covered in the club but are not limited to are situational awareness, accountability, integrity, leadership and more.

Kindness Matters

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will, in a public way, spread kindness throughout WMS. This may include posters, bulletin boards, service activities and /or outreach and random acts of kindness. Diversity and acceptance will be promoted by speakers from the community at large.

Kindness Rock Project

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will use their imagination to create something from nothing and then share it with others to promote kindness because "Kindness Matters."

Magic Club

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will learn magic tricks and practice performing magic with their peers.

Mandalas: Detailed Coloring for Relaxation

6th grade students ONLY

Students can de-stress and re-energize by coloring intricate abstract patterns, paisley, mandalas, flowers, animals and more.

Meet the Applewhites

6th and 7th grade students ONLY

We'll read Surviving the Applewhites by Stephanie Tolan together. You'll meet the Applewhite family, a chaotic and hilarious family of artists. You'll also meet Jake Semple, famous for burning down his old school and being kicked out of many schools. What happens when this juvenile delinquent in placed with this chaotic family? Is Jake as tough as he thinks he is?

We'll explore the THEME of this entertaining story. We'll also look at how we tend to treat others who are different from us and how humor and kindness can create healing. Clips from the historical movie "The Sound of Music" will reveal how unexpected artistic talents provided a whole new life for some of the main characters.

Movie Critic Club

6th grade students ONLY

The club would watch an animated or kid-friendly movie throughout the year (Examples: The Star, Hotel Transylvania 3, Coco, Peter Rabbit) and analyze various elements through discussion and writing.

National History Day

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students research and complete a project to compete in local and state competition.

Qualifying projects will be submitted for local competition at UNCC. Students winning 1st-3rd place in their category will submit their projects to state competition held in Raleigh. Winning projects will then be submitted for competition at the national level in Washington D.C.

Students will work on their projects during club time but competition level projects will need to be worked on outside of the instructional day. Competing students will miss 1-2 days of class for competitions. All students are responsible for work missed at those times.

Piece It Together

6th grade students ONLY

Like working on puzzles? This is the club for you. Whether you find it relaxing, a good source of relieving stress, or simply like the challenge and critical-thinking, this club will work to assemble different types of puzzles. (jigsaw, 3D, photo-mosaic, etc.)

Pokemon

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will play the Pokemon game with their peers and teacher. Students will use skills and strategy to out duel their opponent and win the decisive battle!

Positive Posters

8th grade students ONLY

Students will create signs and posters to promote upcoming events and general happiness. Students may also create notes of kindness for those here at school and throughout the community.

Robotics

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will explore robotics, prepare for robotics competitions, and meet local robotics experts.

Scavenger Hunt

6th grade students ONLY

Students will work in teams to complete various themed scavenger hunts throughout the school.

Science Fiction/Fantasy Books Turned Blockbuster Movie

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will read science fiction/ fantasy genre books on their own between club meetings, and then we will watch the movie versions together during club time. After viewing each film, students will compare and contrast the two mediums.

STEM

6th grade students ONLY

Students will complete various STEM (science, technology, engineering, & math) activities and projects through collaboration and cooperation with peers and teacher.

Stress Free

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Explore mental health and different ways of coping with stress.

String Art

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

String art is weaving colored string, wool, wire, or yarn between hammered nails to make geometric patterns. Artists use lines of thread to create curved patterns that can form various desirable shapes.

Student Council

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

This student run club will help guide activities within the school.

*If you were elected as a homeroom representative, you must select this club.

The 7 Highly Effective Habits of a Teen

8th grade students ONLY

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens is geared for 8th grade students who would like to begin learning skills that will help them become successful in all areas of life by making appropriate choices. This club is based off the book with the same name.

Ukulele Club

7th and 8th grade students ONLY

You MUST be able to read music.

Students will learn the basics of playing a ukulele.

*Students must purchase their own ukulele in order to participate.

Walking Tall!

6th grade students ONLY

Get up and Move! The focus will be on fitness and exercise to promote health and wellness.Bring your walking shoes and water because you will be tracking steps and miles.

Word Search

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will engage in thematically based word searches, as well as timed competition, learning ways to quickly complete word searches.

Wordsmithing (aka Scrabble)

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Students will learn to play and engage in scrabble competition.

Yoga Club

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students

Enjoy a time of relaxation and mindfulness through the art of yoga.

*Student must provide a mat.

Youth Leaders

6th, 7th and 8th grade students

Students will partner with elementary school students in order to foster literacy skill development through read alouds.
