(Being) Catholic Matters David Lins, Director of Faith Formation

It should not be a newsflash that we, as Catholics, believe not only the God can hear us, but that we can also hear God. Do I mean this in an audible sense? Not usually, but it has been known to happen. In the Bible, you’ll hear Him from Genesis 1:27-28 to Numbers 12:6-8. From Matthew 4:16-17 to John 12:27-30. If you don’t believe the Most High God can speak to humanity, you don’t believe in the Bible. Beyond the audible voice of God, we are all called to live our lives properly attuned to the promptings of the Holy Spirit through a sacramental life of prayer. Recently, television personality Joy Behar took issue with Christianity when she said, "It’s one thing to talk to Jesus. It’s another thing when Jesus talks to you. That’s called mental illness, if I’m not correct, hearing voices.” So, all believing Catholics are mentally ill?

The only ground I’ll cede to Ms. Behar, daughter of God (whether or not she realizes it or acts like it), is that all Catholics are sick and in need of God. “And hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners." (Mark 2:17) Wait a minute? Was that just God speaking to us in Scripture? We better go get checked out by a doctor… the Doctor. There is currently no wait to see Him in His office. He calls it the Adoration Chapel. Questions? Comments? Email David at [email protected] Page 3

Youth Ministry Corner

Hey teens! Busy next weekend?

Hop on a bus to Williams, AZ with other teens from OLOJ to embark on

the Conquer Spring Retreat!

More than 400 other teens, just like you, will be attending, looking for an encounter

with Christ and an encounter with other Catholics! Contact [email protected]

to get signed up!

Also, it is not too late to donate to change a teen’s life! (I know this sounds dramatic, but its not!) A retreat for a teen means an

encounter with Christ, and when we encounter Christ, it drastically changes the way we live, who we are and who we live for! Donating to this retreat

means exactly that for the youth of OUR community at Our Lady of Joy!

Thank You for your endless support to this

ministry!!!

Our Lady of Joy Faith Formation

Perpetua and Felicity, Martyrs

Perpetua was a young woman of noble birth and the mother of an infant son. She was arrested in Carthage during the persecution of Christians by Emperor Severus,

along with several other catechumens who included Felicity, a slave. Perpetua kept a record of the trials and sufferings which the group endured while imprisoned and of

the visions which she experienced. This journal, which ran up to the day before their deaths, was completed by an eyewitness.

Nothing could shake the faith of these young women, along with the other martyrs,

not even the fear of a painful death. While our faith is normally not tested in the manner of these martyrs, we should still remain prepared to meet death

at any time since we never completely know God’s plan for us.

COMING SOON! OUR LADY OF JOY’S SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES It was Jesus who invited his disciples into community, where they were formed in His way of discipleship. After his death and resurrection, early Christians prayed together in small gatherings and shared in the Eucharist as they were instructed by the Lord. They supported one another by living the values that Jesus taught them. This was the communicative character of the early Church.

Today, a Small Christian Community (SCC) is typically a group of 6-12 people who meet in each other’s homes twice a month for an hour to grow in their faith through prayer and a sharing of the upcoming Sunday Gospel reading. There are five elements of a SCC: Prayer, Learning, Sharing, Closing Prayer and Fellowship.

Soon you will begin hearing about SCCs from Fr. Jess and Fr. Clement, who are both very excited to introduce this program to our parish. We invite you to prayerfully consider responding to this call. It is hoped that several Small Christian Communities will be active in our parish by mid-April.

For more information contact SCC Coordinator Cliff McGraw at [email protected] or 480-502-1542

GRIEF SUPPORT – 2018

The new year begins with a new component to our Grief Support program. The Journey Begins is a new offering developed specifically for the recently bereaved. This 8-session Catholic-based program will provide the tools to walk the unwanted journey of grief with insight, ritual, skills, and prayer within the framework of a small group. The first session begins on Tuesday, February 6th at 4:00 p.m.in the Parish Center Library and will continue to meet weekly. The first two sessions are open for joining but the 3rd through 8th weeks will be closed so that an atmosphere of trust and a continuity of process can be achieved. Confidentiality is a certainty. The program will repeat itself with at least a six week break between sessions. Please call Chaplain Jenny at 623-523-3714 for information about the next session or questions about the journey of grief.

The Journey Continues is the new name for our ongoing grief support group that meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month in Room 3 of the Parish Center at 4:00 pm. This group has been walking grief’s journey for a while and in a trusting environment they share new challenges, find understanding in remembering loved ones and a group that prays together. All those who attend The Journey Begins will find the Journey Continues to be a welcome transition. The next Journey Continues will meet on Tuesday, February 27. Contact: Lynne LoCascio at 480-471-7864 or Sheila Christenson at 480-575-7742.

SANCTITY OF LIFE Come join our lively discussions on topics that we are faced with in today’s society regarding Life issues. Get to know what the Catholic Church teaches and where it stands on these issues.
