At the December AGM, our trustee Diana Walker was given the title of our first Honorary Vice President and presented with an award for over 36 years of dedication and voluntary work for MSH. She started as a volunteer in 1977 and subsequently became a trustee and served as chairman. MSH owes Diana an enormous debt of gratitude for her wonderful contribution to the charity.

There are also some other changes on the Board. Eddie O’Sullivan is stepping down as Treasurer after 18 years but will continue as a trustee. We would like to thank Eddie for all of his hard work and commitment on the financial side making every penny count for MHS. Trustee Rowena Dean will be replacing Eddie as Treasurer and we are thrilled to have her on board.

The Peace Hospice in Watford closed its inpatient unit doors for a refurbishment programme for 6 weeks last September. During that time, many patients and staff were relocated to Michael Sobell Hospice in order to keep vital care and services going for those who needed it. A clinical team of staff including 2 doctors and 11 nurses moved across from Watford to Northwood and we caught up with some of the nurses before they left to speak to them about their time at MSH.

All of the nurses commented on how great the care was at MSH and also how quickly they were made to feel part of the team. According to staff nurse, Cecilia, “we were all made to feel very welcome. The care here is brilliant at all levels. There is no real sense of hierarchy and all of the team are so ‘hands on’.”

The nurses were very impressed with the ‘Good Productive Ward’ system which is in practice at MSH. This operates by having all of the required facilities and supplies right next to the wards making everything easily accessible. Cecilia said “everything from drinks and snacks for the patients, to dressings, linen and even the pharmacy are all close by, freeing up more time for us to spend with the patients and less time trying to find things. Senior Staff Nurse Bibi said, “This is an excellent concept which we will be proposing for the Peace to adopt in the near future.” Carol Weston, Ward Manager at MSH, said “I think the whole experience was very beneficial to both MSH and Peace staff, and we learned a lot from each other.” The Peace nurses want to thank all of the staff, sisters and Ian for making them feel so welcome.

Dear Friend

Welcome to our Spring newsletter. Since our last edition it has been a really busy time for us here at MSH. Thanks to our wonderful supporters who contributed so much in 2013 in money and/or time. This continued support means that we are able to provide the best possible care for our local community.

As always our newsletter is packed with fundraising news, events and ideas that we hope will persuade you to continue to support us. This year we need to raise over £1.4 million for MSH and one of the very special ways you can do so is to set up a regular gift to Michael Sobell Hospice by Direct Debit. Your regular, predictable support helps the Hospice to plan ahead securely and it’s never been easier to do so. Just visit our new website www.michaelsobellhospice.co.uk /regular-giving. Any size donation will make such a difference to our patients and their families.

Thank you for your support and best wishes.

Helen Elliott Chief Executive

Last month Margaret Wilcock left MSH for pastures new. She joined us in 2004 initially as Day Care Leader, and then became the inpatient unit Manager in January 2008. She was already a very experienced nurse and brought with her a very ‘can do’ approach to nursing. She soon became a big hit with patients, relatives and volunteers.

Margaret was very supportive of the nursing staff and has been instrumental in their career development. She also has a great sense of humour. We wish her all the best in her new post at St Luke’s Hospice in Kenton.

We are pleased to announce that Carol Weston has been promoted to be our new Ward Manager. Carol has worked at MSH for many years and has risen up the ranks from volunteer! She has worked exceptionally hard undertaking her nurse training and most recently a degree in palliative care. She is very committed to MSH, and we wish her all the best with her new post.

Welcome

The Hospice Lottery Partnership raises vital funds for six local hospices. Since we joined in 2005, MSH has received over £700,000 in lottery funds.

In recent years this income has considerably helped fund The Day Centre offering patients care, support and companionship when they need it, for as long as they need it. We are incredibly grateful to our lottery members who have helped raise this amazing amount of money.

It only costs £4.34 a month to join and as well as having the chance of winning some great cash prizes every week, you are also helping to raise vital funds for us.

If you aren’t already a member, then please look out for membership promoter Peter Tarbox who regularly visits the Mount Vernon hospital as well as local retail

outlets, and attends many of our events.

You can find out more information and join online by visiting www.hospicelottery.org.uk

Superdraw 2014 gives you the chance to win some great cash prizes as well as raising much needed income for us. Tickets for Superdraw 2014 will this year only be mailed to HLP members. If you are not a member, don’t worry, you can still purchase tickets. Please do not hesitate to contact HLP directly on 01442 891459 or visit their website at www.hospicelottery.org.uk.

While you are doing your spring cleaning or wondering what to do with those unwanted Christmas presents, think of us! Recycle with MSH and let us turn your unwanted items into cash! We urgently need clothing, bras, shoes, handbags and textiles. As well as the usual items such as clothes, books etc we also accept selected items of furniture, sports equipment or perhaps more valuable articles which may be more suitable for sale via our well established eBay facility. So if you have anything which you think may be suitable please call David Mosely on 01923 844152 for advice. Don’t forget we can collect! We look forward to hearing from you!

Following on from the National Cancer Survivorship Initiative, MSH has been piloting a new community palliative rehabilitation scheme where patients with life limiting illnesses can receive help at home at an earlier stage of their illness. The aim of the scheme is to offer patients specialist advice and practical help with managing specific symptoms and their daily activities, and to provide a speedy service that enables patients to maximise their quality of life for as long as possible. The service involves a thorough assessment, either as an out patient or at home, by our physiotherapist and/or occupational therapist. They are then able to plan with you a programme of tailored advice and intervention to help with problems such as reduced mobility, pain, breathlessness and anxiety management. Intervention could include relaxation sessions, mobility practice, exercise programmes and/or provision of equipment and adaptations, for example, bath seats and rails.

During the pilot, patients have been referred directly from a community palliative care team but the team hopes this may be expanded to other professionals and eventually self referrals. Sarah Crickmore, Senior Physiotherapist and rehab team member said “so far there has been a very positive feedback from the palliative care team referrers and they feel the quick response time has been particularly useful for patients. Patients have commented that they have found the rehab team’s input to be informative, sensitive, practical and reassuring. According to John Hayward, a patient of the rehab team, “they were absolutely brilliant, they have organised lots of little things to make my life easier such as bannisters for my stairs and support chairs. They have also helped me with my breathing so that I can get up the stairs more easily and what’s more everything was done so quickly.”

For more information on this service contact Sarah or Julie on 01923 844375.

Did you know that the Education Team at Michael Sobell runs regular sessions throughout the year especially for volunteers? These are on a variety of topics from how chemotherapy and radiotherapy work, to customer care training.

One of the new initiatives we piloted in 2013 was training volunteers in patient feeding – this is so that the volunteers in the clinical areas feel more confident and supported in assisting patients with their meals. The first session

went very well and we hope to run it again this year.

Volunteers from several hospices and hospitals attend and this makes the sessions really good for peer support and sharing of experiences as volunteers. During 2013 we had over 100 volunteers attend our education sessions. For more details on this or any of our other courses check out the Education page on our website www.michaelsobellhospice.co.uk or call Anni on 01923 844177.

A craic-ing event

Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge

In August last year Gary Brown organised for a group of 19 people from Carillion and the Northwood base to rise to the challenge of climbing 3 Yorkshire peaks in 12 hours. Not only did the group climb Pen Y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, which totalled a distance of 22 miles and 1,570 metres, but they did it in under 9 hours!! The group of walkers, who called themselves Team F.I.N.D, raised a total of over £4,000 for MSH. This was a fantastic effort from all concerned and this money will be used towards vital services for our patients. Many thanks Team F.I.N.D.

A Very Big Thank You To…• Donnell Mitchell and his colleagues who raised

£2,083 for MSH in memory of his father-in-law Eduardo Pereira by completing a sponsored charity bike ride from London to Paris, which they called the ‘Fat Boys Ride’.

• Peter Breslin who ran the Royal Parks Half Marathon and raised over £500.

• Nigel Farnfield who raised £1,335 by competing in the Thames Path Challenge 100K walk.

• Elaine Ryan and Sue Smith From Ladybanks School who raised over £1,500 doing a skydive for us!

• We are very grateful to Georgina Reynolds and David Lake at Cowley Road Tyre and Exhaust Centre who again nominated MSH for an award of £250 in December 2013 from the Kumho Tyres Cash for Causes campaign.

• Chorleywood Parish Council held its 4th Charity Quiz Night & Supper in November for deserving local causes. Each charity entering a team received

a share of the proceeds. MSH was lucky to be drawn out of a hat to receive the biggest donation of £500. Thanks to Bob Whitney for inviting us.

In September last year The London Irish Vintage Club held its third annual charity rally. The event began with crowds waving off a fleet of over one hundred vintage vehicles including tractors, lorries and cars at the old Galtymore dance hall in Cricklewood. Once the convoy reached its final stop at the Tir Chonaill Park in Greenford, the whole area became an enormous transport museum for all to enjoy. Amongst the hordes of vehicles were Fodens and AEC lorries, a 1942 Fordson tractor and classic cars including a 1966 Ford Mustang, a 1969 MK1 Ford Capri and 1959 Morris Minor.

There were also lots of things for

the whole family to enjoy including a fun-fair and a mini digger competition. There was a James O’Doherty Threshing Mill arriving on a horse and cart with men with pitch forks loading up the grain on it showing scenes of bygone days. There was also a live Auction with fabulous prizes including a Landrover and sporting event tickets. The event raised over £70,000 for four charities including Michael Sobell Hospice. We want to thank the London Irish Vintage Club for putting on this fantastic fundraising event.

You can get involved next year by visiting their website www.londonirishvintageclub.com

We were delighted when Simon Thoday popped into the hospice just before Christmas with a seasonal donation of £2,909 on behalf of the Freemasons‘ Grand Charity. Melanie Burfitt of the fundraising team was on hand to accept the cheque and say a big thank you. Simon is pictured here with Melanie.

• All the members of the Sobell Bridge Club for raising £30,000 over the last twelve months.

• The Ruislip Belles & Beaux bell ringing group who performed for our patients in January and handed over a cheque for £2,400 from their fantastic 2013 fundraising events.

• Floral Angels who donated some beautiful flower arrangements to the hospice for nurses, patients and their families to enjoy.

£9,000 donated to MSH from the George Aldridge Cancer FundWe would like to thank the George Aldridge Cancer Fund for their very generous donation of £9,000 for our Patient and Family Support Service. The fund was set up in 1994 by George Aldridge while he was in the terminal stages of cancer. George was keen for the money raised from a variety of fundraising events to go towards cancer relief causes, having received treatment at Mount Vernon Hospital. The fund has

stayed in existence for almost twenty years and has raised and dispersed £68,000 to cancer relief. George’s mother, Mrs Jo Aldridge, visited MSH on 13 November to present the funds and spend some time with Helen Nash of our Patient and Family support team. We would also like to thank George’s brother Martyn for his help and support.

Every issue we feature volunteers who give their time to Michael Sobell HospiceVolunteers

A very ‘tweet’ story

Our amazing team of volunteer gardeners have had a very busy few months. In September last year they won first place in the Hillingdon Volunteer Awards 2013 in the ‘Team Volunteer Award’ category out of 70 nominations. The Worshipful Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Allan Kauffman, presented the award to Louise Gourlay, Voluntary Services Manager at Michael Sobell Hospice for the team. The award is given to a team of people who have shown outstanding commitment and dedication to a voluntary or community project.

Louise, who nominated the team of gardeners, said: “I wanted the team to win an award in recognition of their commitment and willingness to improve the Michael Sobell Hospice and Cancer Centre surroundings. With the help of our volunteers, we can wheel our patients outside in their beds to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of our beautiful gardens. They are an amazing team that contribute so much to our charity.”

In November the gardeners were also shortlisted to receive a Team London Award in the Greening & Cleaning category. Team London is the Mayor of London’s volunteering programme for London and this annual awards ceremony recognises the amazing achievements of volunteers in London over the last year. Unfortunately they didn’t win, but they enjoyed a lovely day out at the awards ceremony at City Hall.

Georgina Abraham applied to become a volunteer at MSH in 2008 when she was 16 and began volunteering regularly on a Saturday, offering hospitality and friendship to our patients and their visitors. When Georgina went off to University she kept in touch with the hospice and visited us whenever she came home. During one of her visits, she heard that we wanted to brighten up the aviary in the unit, and knowing that her mother Marie had a keen interest in art, Georgina asked her to help with this project. Marie had wanted to support MSH for some time but had been unable to commit to regular volunteering so she jumped at the chance to put her skills to good use.

She began the project by designing the artwork of trees, flowers and butterflies and planning the colour scheme. With the help of her husband Christopher, they transformed the aviary in just one week into a beautiful home for the 30 birds that live in it. Marie said “the project was so rewarding, everyone in the unit was so lovely, blowing kisses at us through the aviary windows while we were painting.”

The aviary means a lot to our hospice, to patients, their visitors as well as staff and we are absolutely delighted with the new look. We would like to extend our thanks to the Abraham family, who have brightened up the place and brought a smile to many faces, and also to the team of volunteers who give up their time each week to feed the birds and keep the area clean.

Michael Sobell Hospice would like to recognise the contribution of ex volunteer Rene Fer who passed away in December 2013. Rene, a staunch supporter of MSH, was over 100 years old and had helped for many years at the hospice, particularly as a member of the gardening team. We send our condolences to Rene’s family.

Michael Sobell Hospice Matters • Spring 2014

Thanks to everyone who supported these two events which raised over £3,000 for MSH.

In October we held a Hospice Care Week coffee, cake and pledge morning. Lots of people made pledges to raise awareness of the importance of hospice care and put them on our wall of pledges. We also had visits during the week from our local MP Nick Hurd and Councillor Scott Seaman-Digby.

This year we held 2 Light up a Life remembrance ceremonies where people were able to remember those they had loved and lost. The Mayor and Mayoress of Hillingdon came along to the afternoon service. The Light up a Life tree was lit up by fundraising volunteers David Newton and Joyce Geary. A big thank you to the Lemon Tuesday and Harrow Harmony choirs who gave up their time to sing so movingly at our services. Also thank you to Linda Martin who donated all of the beautiful flowers for the event, and to all of the volunteers who helped out on the day.
