Homework• Homework is an important part of fifth grade learning

and success! Homework is extra practice and should reflect the day’s work.

• If your child is spending more than an hour each night (not counting independent reading), come and talk to me and/or leave a short note explaining the struggle

Students should read every night at least Monday through Thursday for 30 minutes. They should record the book and pages read on their Planning Sheet.

Expect to find one page (double sided) of Math homework each night Monday-Thursday from the day’s lesson. There will also be All the Right Type, practicing math facts, or studying spelling words assigned nightly.

Once a week your child will be expected to make an entry into his/her Reading Response Journal. There may also be writing homework for students who need to finish assignments not completed in class.

Late/Missing Work

• Students who do not bring back their homework will need to stay in during recess to finish it.• If your child has excessive missing work, I will

send an e-mail or note home. Students will be expected to complete and return work promptly. • Students are expected to complete homework

assignments for days they are at school. If a child is sick, s/he does not have to do homework for the days s/he wasn’t present.

(Based on an average novel length of 160 pages)•5 books per month = 25 books per semester

More Grading Details…

• Math Unit Tests – There will be a pre- and posttest for each large unit. I will staple the pretest to the back of the posttest so you can compare.

• Spelling – There are 13 weekly words, plus two randomly pulled from prior lists (15 words in all). There will also be a secret bonus word that can help, but not harm a student’s score.

SBASmarter Balanced Assessment

This is the year your student will take the SBA English Langue Arts and Math, and the MSP (Measurement of Student Progress) in Science.

I will provide practice opportunities and focus on test taking strategies as a genre.

I try to keep this time as stress free as possible while preparing students to do their best work and show what they have learned.

THANKS

• Questions??• Also, please don’t hesitate to let me know if

your child needs a special accommodation. I’ve let the students know my classroom expectations, but I can be flexible and make exceptions if it’s in the best interest of the child.

• Fall conferences are a time to see your child’s pre-assessment scores for fifth grade, and to ask specific questions about their progress! Students are expected to attend.

• Thanks so much for coming!
