House cats are cats b red to l i ve w i th people as pets. Years ago, people took in wild cats, and kept them at their houses. Then, they sorted out the wild cat kittens, and kept only the nicest, smartest, and prettiest ones for themselves!

American Shorthairs were brought over to Plymouth Rock by the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620 - you really can't get any more American than that!

The Maine Coon cat breed is also an American original. Maine Coons are very large and heavy cats - they even have the longest whiskers of all house cat breeds! They also love catching rodents, and walking in the snow!
