NEW DELHI, Oct 18: The army had carried out
"target specific, limited-calibre,counter-terrorist operations"across the LoC in the past toobut this is for the first time theGovernment has gone public
about it, a Parliamentary panelwas told today, in remarks thatappear to contradict the DefenceMinister's claim.
Foreign Secretary SJaishankar gave this informationto the Parliamentary Committee
on Exernal Affairs when he wasspecifically asked by MPswhether surgical strikes havebeen done in the past.
"Professionally done, target-specific, limited calibre counter-terrorist operations" have beencarried out across the LoC in thepast too, but this is for the firsttime that the Government hasmade it public," according tosources present in the meeting.
The top diplomat's commentsassume significance in the contextof claims by Defence MinisterManohar Parrikar's claims lastweek rejecting Congress's claimsthat surgical strikes were under-taken during the UPAGovernment too.
He had asserted that it wasthe first time that surgical strikeshad taken place in the aftermathof the Uri terror attack and whatwas undertaken previously wereoperations locally executed bycommanders without involvingthe Government.(PTI)sss
