Enhancing sustainability and well-being in residential and urban spaces

Today’s urban planner faces lighting demands undreamt of even a decade ago. It is no longer sufficient to provide orientation with security after dark. It is not even enough to create an ambience that gives a sense of well-being. We need to deliver all these, but in an environmentally friendly manner.

Stricter rules are being applied to product design, use and disposal. Older technologies are being outlawed and obtrusive light regulations tightened. We have to minimise the carbon footprint of a product and maximise sustainability.

Clearly, a new creative approach was needed; now it has arrived.

Plurio presents a portfolio of decorative post-top lanterns and columns which factor in:

Simple and friendly design Their clean lines, colour and contours, blend harmoniously with most urban landscapes.

There are three styles, as shown on the right. In each there are choices of lamps, optics and optical accessories.

Well being and lighting performance The universal shapes, combined with an innovative high performance optical system, create a sense of space, safety and well-being. There is a choice of lamp types, including ‘white light’ options, to suit differing applications.

Environmental Integrity The use of environmentally sound materials; the design of the lantern and its optics; and the volume optimisation of the packaging ensures that Plurio provides minimal obtrusive light nuisance, sustainable energy savings and thus valuable reductions in CO2 emissions.

Low cost of ownership Designed from concept stage to be easy to install and maintain, the Plurio range represents excellent value for money.

Plurio has been designed as standard to meet the ULOR requirements in term of E2 (low district brightness areas e.g. rural or small villages) and with the ULOR 0% accessory, the more stringent E1.

Plurio in action: fast payback - and better lighting tooUp to 72.5% energy savings!

Sustainability

SustainabilityElectric lighting in urban areas has a major impact on sustainability. The key to sustainability in lighting is eco-design, efficient operation and planned recycling at the end of the product life.

Eco-design Thorn employs life cycle assessments, as per the Energy-using Products Directive (EuP), to check the environmental impact of its products through life. This ensures that care is taken during design to employ, absolutely, the minimum amount of restricted hazardous substances - Plurio complies with the RoHS Directive - and that the minimum amount of virgin materials, water and energy are used during manufacture. Finally, Plurio’s light distribution is designed to reduce obtrusive light and sky glow according to I.L.E recommendations.

Efficient operationThe generation of electrical energy required for lighting is a major contributor to CO2 emissions. For every kWh of energy 0.42 kg of CO2 is liberated and added to the 'greenhouse' gases in the atmosphere, increasing global warming.

The most energy consumption by the product is clearly during operation, which can be influenced by prudent design and component selection. For Plurio the key elements are high performance optics employing modern light sources (no mercury types), electronic gear and the option of mini photocells.

With efficient products, correct lighting scheme design and the use of control systems substantial energy saving can be made without jeopardising the quality of the required lighting condition.

RecyclingPlurio has a high aluminium content and is designed for disassembly and dematerialisation and, as with all Thorn products, meets the obligations of the WEEE waste directive.

The data for an S2 project clearly shows that for the same illuminance (10 lux, average required) one Plurio lantern can replace two opal globe lanterns. For a new lighting project, for instance a pedestrian open zone as described on the former page, wider spacings between the Plurio lanterns brings the benefits of enhanced accessibility and less clutter in the public spaces, whilst retaining uniformity and illumination levels. The resulting savings are shown below:
