Walter Scott AsksMichael DouglasThe Oscar-winning actor returns to TV more than 40 years after his starring role in TV’s The Streets of San Francisco in the new Netflix comedy The Kominsky Method (streaming Nov. 16). Douglas, 74, stars as Sandy Kominsky, an acting teacher navigating life’s curveballs with his best friend, Norman (Alan Arkin).
BACK TO HOGWARTSEddie Redmayne, 36, returns as magizoologist Newt Scamander for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (in theaters Nov. 16), the second film in the latest J.K. Rowling wizarding franchise. This time, dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) has escaped and it’s up to Newt and Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) to thwart his evil plans. Here are five fun facts about the British-born actor.
He attended Eton with Prince Wil-liam, where both played on the rugby
team.
1 2 3 4 5
He lied about his ability to ride a horse for a role in the miniseries Elizabeth I—and fell off while film-ing his big scene.
Redmayne and his wife, Hannah
Bagshawe, 35, were friends for 12 years before
their first date—in Florence, Italy.
Despite being an Oscar win-
ner, Redmayne says he still
uses the tube to get around
London.
Physicist Stephen Hawking said Red-
mayne’s portrayal of him in The Theory
of Everything made him think he was watching himself.
Viola Davis Leads the WidowsThe star of TV’s How to Get Away With Murder plays Veronica in Widows (in theaters Nov. 16). Davis, 53, portrays one of four women who come together when their men are killed while attempting a heist. The female quartet decides to complete the crime. “There’s a love story at the center of it,” Davis says. “I like me in a love story, because I played a lot of lawyers and detec-tives and CIA directors.”
What bizarre role did he give old friend Danny DeVito in his new series? And are his kids with
Catherine Zeta-Jones going into acting? Go to Parade.com/douglas to find out.
You aren’t known for comedy. I love com-edy. Over the years, there were [the movies] Romancing the Stone, War of the Roses and Wonder Boys. I don’t say it’s my forte. What attracted you to Sandy Kominsky? I’ve always liked flawed characters, somebody who’s good at one thing but not necessarily what he wants to be good at. Sandy never got the career that he had hoped for. He never quite succeeded as the husband he hoped to be. But teaching acting is what gets him up in the morning. Did your age give you any insight into Sandy? I love the idea that you don’t really ever become an adult. You deal with the physicality of getting older, but emotionally some of us have stopped at different ages. I enjoy seeing how that plays out, particularly when people interrelate. Is there something not related to acting that you’re looking forward to? The elimina-tion of nuclear weapons would be something I’d love to see in my lifetime. It’s a cause that’s meant a lot to me.
Brad & Carrie & Country’s Big Night Brad Paisley, 46, and Carrie Underwood, 35, will host the 52nd Annual CMA Awards (Nov. 14 on ABC) for the 11th year in a row live from Nashville. “We just want to have a good time and show-case what we do,” says Underwood, who is ex-pecting her second child with husband Mike Fisher and is nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year and Music Video of the Year. Underwood and Paisley will be joined by other top nominees, including Chris Stapleton, Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Dan + Shay, Florida Georgia Line, Chris Janson, Miranda Lambert, Thomas Rhett and Keith Urban.

The last two digits of my birth year are the same as my age today. Can you state with 100 percent certainty how old I am?
—Thomas Maxwell, West Palm Beach, Fla.
Readers, here’s how to solve this fun problem. Say you were born in 1980. You would be 80 years old in 2060, so that’s when the last two digits of your birth year would match your age. So how old is Thomas now? The last two digits of the year of anyone’s birth range from 00 to 99. Dou-bling only two of those numbers (9 and 59) results in the last two digits of the year now (the 18 in 2018). Thomas isn’t 9 years old (born in 2009) because his age has two digits. So he must be 59 years old (born in 1959).

An astounding three-fourths of caregiving support in
the U.S. comes from family members. They're everywhere yet often feel isolated. They help others while craving help themselves. Meet five of these 44 million heroes.
Sharon UrbinaCarlos Urbina met future wife Sharon after his first tour of duty in Iraq in 2003. After his second Iraq tour, they married. Then, "I gradually noticed his core per-sonality began to shift,” she says—the effects of PTSD and a severe traumatic brain injury. By 2015, the once productive, upbeat 16-year Marine Corps veteran was suicidal.
Sharon guided Carlos through two hospitaliza-tions and ongoing extensive therapies. Now 37, he studies at Louisiana’s Southeastern University and volunteers in equestrian therapy and as a YMCA Reach and Rise mentor. Sharon, 35, still handles all their finances and decision-making, as well as tasks like night driving and shopping
(which overwhelm Carlos’ still-healing mental health).
What’s hard: “Reframing our expectations of what life ‘should be’ to what it is—and finding happiness and content-ment there,” says Sharon, who advocates for mental-health support in the Marine Corps as a 2018 Elizabeth Dole Fellow.
What helps: “My saving grace has been my support systems.”
Sarah and Daniel ReinersFive kids keep any parent hopping. When two have chro-mosomal disorders, you gal-lop. Sarah and Daniel Reiners’ youngest, 8-year-old Sophie, has Turner syndrome and trisomy 10. A wheelchair user, with a feeding tube to be man-aged and diapers to change, she had open-heart surgery at 2 and spine surgery for scolio-sis at 4. Third-born son Kade, 13, has Down syndrome and speech/learning disabilities. (Rounding out the clan: Dylan, 22, Evan, 15, and Abigale, 10.)
Sometimes the helpers need a little help themselves. By Paula Spencer Scott
Himself a disabled Army veteran, Daniel quit his weld-ing trade as Sophie’s needs mounted. He now has more flexible hours guiding outdoor trips near their Bemidji, Minn., home. His employer, Cedar Swamp Guides, also works with other vets and special-needs families.
What’s hard: “Just juggling everything,” says Daniel.
What helps: “Connecting with other parents.” Sarah started Northern Minnesota Special Kids United to swap tips. She cherishes that its 370-plus members “all can relate.”
Loretta Woodward Veney Working 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Department of Homeland Security suits Loretta Veney perfectly. “I’m a morn-ing girl, and my mother is not,” says the training services contractor. By 2:30, she arrives at the group home in Clinton, Md., where her 89-year-old mother, Doris, lives.
Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2006, Doris hasn’t recog-nized her daughter since 2013. But she loves building Lego structures with her, taking walks or listening to Amazon’s Alexa read. (“She can’t follow the stories, but she’s mesmerized by her voice.”)
“I play along because I want her to be calm and happy,” says Veney, who’s 59 and has self-published a memoir, Being My Mom’s Mom, to fill a gap in accounts of African-American adult children finding positives amid the grief of dementia.
What’s hard: “I’m stunned
that my mother has outlived my sister and my husband.”
What helps: “I try to focus on what she can still do, not what she can’t.”
Chris Chytka As a kindergartner, Olivia Chyt-ka once puzzled over a photo of a vibrant blonde standing beside her dad. “Who’s that lady?” she asked. “That really tore our hearts,” remembers Chris Chytka, 44, of Aumsville, Ore. The blond woman, Ol-ivia’s mom and his wife, Kara, has been a wheelchair user or bedridden since their daughter was just 1. Olivia’s now a high school senior.
Despite initial improve-ments during treatment for chronic Lyme disease, a series of setbacks in 2001 left Kara mentally sharp but on a ventilator and feeding tube for nearly a decade. For 10 years, she’s communicated mainly through eye-tracking technol-ogy and facial cues. Chris, a former pipe-fitting apprentice, became a full-time caregiver in 2008, paid by an Oregon Medicaid program. “I’ve kept her home to keep our family to-gether,” he says. In addition to Olivia, he’s raised Brianna, 21 (above right), and Taylor, 19.
What’s hard: “Depression and losing your identity as a person. Also the lack of inti-macy—not sexual, just human touch and the connection with another adult.” He started a Facebook group to talk about these tough issues with other caregivers.
What helps: “Finally real-izing I can’t do it all myself and learning to ask for help.”

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PBAFor people with an underlying neurological condition and sudden, frequent, uncontrollable crying or laughing symptoms like Jim’s, it’s important to talk to a doctor. A short quiz is available online at pbainfo.org to help start a conversation with a doctor.
Lori believes that Jim isn’t the only one suffering and wants to help get the word out about PBA.
As a long-time caregiver of her husband, Jim, who has been living with Parkinson’s disease for more than 15 years, Lori is well-equipped to help him manage the ups and downs of the disease. But when she noticed Jim repeatedly laughing or crying at unusual times, even when they weren’t discussing or watching anything funny or sad, she knew she had to discuss it with his doctor.
Jim’s doctors thought the laughing and crying could be related to his Parkinson’s disease, or to an anxiety disorder or depression, but they did not have a definitive diagnosis for him. For several months, Lori watched helplessly as Jim continued to uncontrollably laugh and cry at unusual times without knowing why or how to help. Then she heard about a medical condition called PseudoBulbar Affect (PBA). She discussed it with Jim’s doctors, and he was officially diagnosed the same year.
i Miller A, Pratt H, Schiffer RB. Pseudobulbar affect: the spectrum of clinical presentations, etiologies and treatments. Expert Rev. Neurother. 11(7), 1077–1088 (2011).ii Work SS, Colamonico JA, Bradley WG, Kaye RE. Pseudobulbar affect: an under-recognized and under-treated neurological disorder. Adv Ther. 2011;28:586-601.
PBA IMPACTS DAILY LIFE FOR PATIENT AND CAREGIVERLori has been Jim’s caregiver for more than 20 years. Her primary caregiving responsibilities include driving him wherever he needs to go and attending appointments with him. She also ensures he takes his medications, eats properly and takes care of himself.
Lori feels it is her task to decipher whether Jim’s laughing and crying reflect how he is feeling, or if he is experiencing a PBA episode.
Jim and Lori openly discuss Jim’s PBA diagnosis with their kids, friends, and family to make sure they are aware of what is happening in case he has an episode in their presence. They both agree that Jim’s PBA symptoms still greatly impact their day-to-day lives, especially when it comes to being in public or socializing. Jim’s PBA episodes have also greatly affected her social life and their marriage in significant ways.
“Jim doesn’t like to go out and socialize, especially with people he doesn’t know,” Lori says. “I do a lot of things alone, unfortunately. I wish it could be the way it used to be, but we’ve just gotten used to it.”
“WHEN HE WOULD LAUGH, I THOUGHT HE WAS LAUGHING AT ME, and when he would cry, I didn’t know what he was crying about or why,” Lori says.
WHAT IS PBA?• Certain neurologic conditions or brain injury can affect the signals that
tell a person’s body when or how much to cry or laugh. This can triggerepisodes of crying or laughing that are sudden, frequent, uncontrollable, andexaggerated (more intense or lasting longer than expected) or mismatched(not fitting the situation).i
• PBA affects about 2 million people in the United States, including men andwomen who have experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or are livingwith certain neurologic conditions like stroke; Alzheimer’s disease (AD) anddementia; multiple sclerosis (MS); Parkinson’s disease; and amyotrophiclateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease.ii
• Symptoms of PBA are often overlooked or mischaracterized as depression. While these conditions can often coexist — meaning some people can haveboth PBA and depression — both conditions are manageable and should beindependently diagnosed.i
“I HAVE TO REALLY BE IN TUNE, or I can’t tell when his laughing or crying is in line with his emotions,” Lori says.
“WE WANT TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT PBA FOR THE PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO ARE SUFFERING,but don’t know anything about this condition,” Lori says.

BEST.TURKEY.SANDWICHES.It’s a fact: 79 percent of us look forward to Thanksgiving leftovers even more than the feast itself. And our favorite way to enjoy the holiday extras? Sandwiches, of course! Try these fab concoctions from some of America’s best chefs. Recipes start on page 10.Produced by Alison Ashton • Cover and feature photography by Mark Boughton • Styling by Teresa Blackburn
TURKEY MONTE CRISTOThis creation, from Martha Stewart and the editors of Martha Stewart
Living magazine, is an upscale spin on Thanksgiving leftovers. “If you like French toast and grilled cheese, you’ll love a Monte Cristo,” says Stewart.
“This sandwich is usually pan-fried, but baking it instead means you can use less butter and make several at a time.”
HOT TURKEY CROISSANT SANDWICH WITH SWEET POTATO AND HAVARTI“One of the joys of Thanksgiving dinner is knowing there will be leftovers,” says Parade chef Jon Ashton. “Here, I fill a buttery croissant with all the best food from your Thanksgiving feast for a truly memorable sandwich.” Havarti is a creamy Danish-style cheese that you can find in most supermarkets; Monterey Jack is a good substitute.

ROASTED TURKEY, BACON, ONION RELISH AND AIOLI ON CIABATTATo make onion relish: In a medium-size heavy saucepan, combine 2 yellow onions, thinly sliced, and enough water to cover; bring to boil. Drain. Return onions to pot; add ¼ cup dark brown sugar, ½ cup red wine vinegar and ½ cup balsamic vinegar. Bring to a simmer over medium. Reduce heat to low; cook, uncovered, 90 minutes or until onions are completely tender, stirring occasionally. (Liquid should be syrupy and coat onions.) Remove from heat; cool to room temperature.
To make aioli: In food processor or blender, purée 1 large pasteurized egg yolk, 1 Tbsp white wine vinegar, 1 tsp Dijon mus-tard and ½ clove garlic, minced, 1–2 minutes or until smooth and creamy. Combine ½ cup grapeseed oil and 2 Tbsp olive oil. With motor running, slowly drizzle oil mixture into processor until com-pletely emulsifi ed, about 2 minutes. (If aioli gets too thick, add warm water 1 tsp at a time.) Sprinkle in ¼ tsp kosher salt, 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper and 1/8 tsp cayenne. Transfer to a small bowl, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to use.
Preheat oven to 350°F. Place 4 halved ciabatta rolls cut side up on a large baking sheet. Divide 1 lb sliced roast turkey breast evenly among bottom halves of rolls; spread onion relish over meat. Divide 12 slices cooked bacon evenly among ciabatta tops. Transfer baking sheet to oven; toast 5 minutes or until edges of ciabatta turn light golden brown. (The turkey does not have to get hot.) Remove from oven and transfer bacon to other side of ciabatta, laying on top of onion relish. Top with 1 avocado, halved, pitted, peeled and thinly sliced. Spread aioli on ciabatta tops, close sandwiches and slice in half. Serves 4.
BBQ TURKEY AND STUFFING WAFFLES WITH CRISPY BACON AND CRANBERRY-JALAPEÑO MAYOTo make mayo: In a small bowl, combine 1 cup mayonnaise, ¼ cup cranberry sauce, 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard, 1–2 Tbsp chopped pickled jalapeños, ½ tsp granulated garlic, salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste; refrigerate.
Preheat waffl e iron. In a large bowl, whisk 2 large eggs. Stir in 2 Tbsp melted and cooled butter. Add 4 cups crumbled stuffi ng and mix well. Brush top and bot-tom of waffl e iron with vegetable oil. Firmly pack waffl e iron with stuffi ng mixture, close and cook 8–10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and separate into 4 waffl es.
Heat a griddle or grill pan to medium-high; brush with oil. Toss ¾ lb sliced roast turkey with 1½ tsp barbecue rub spice blend. Cook until caramelized, about 2 minutes on each side.
Spread waffl es evenly with cranberry mayo. Divide 12 slices cooked bacon among waffl es. Top with 1 sliced Roma tomato, turkey and a sprinkling of french-fried onions. If desired, top each with 1 sunny-side-up fried egg. Serves 4.

The entrepreneur of Mag-nolia fame (the market, the housewares, the real estate company, the
magazine) first came into our homes with husband Chip (she designed, he built) on HGTV’s hit Fixer Upper, where for five years the duo helped Waco, Texas, residents find and refine their dream homes. Now, Joanna Gaines is sharing her best work in her new book, Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave.
“It’s not about a specific style,” she says. “It’s about telling your story.” We caught up with the mom of five last month.
What’s a typical Sunday like at your house? I think Chip would agree that we’re both homebodies, and that there’s no place we’d rather be than at home with our kids. Since bringing home [now nearly 5-month-old] Crew, I’ve noticed that none of us are in a hurry to be any-where but there.

The same ones they recommend to their patients!
Doctors love MDHearingAids®
for the same reasons patients do.
These FDA-registered, medical-grade
hearing aids have the same
high-tech features found in more
expensive hearing aids yet cost

“MDHearingAids are better than expensive clinic hearing aids, which cost thousands more,” says retired physician Dr. Robert A.
“I have had fi ve pairs of expensive hearing aids and MDHearingAids are just as good,” adds retired neurosurgeon Dr. Brian L.
So Strong Even Doctors Can’t Break Them MDHearingAids are made to last, backed by a world-class
support team. Says one forgetful neurologist :
“My MDHearingAids went through a complete washer and dryer cycle. I placed them on my ears and — ay caramba! — they were working fine! Can you believe that I did it again? I found
them at the bottom of the washer… still working!”

favorite meal. I love when breakfast [pancakes or biscuits and gravy] can be an all-hands-on-deck event.
What was your inspiration for your new book? Home is my favorite place on earth, but I’ve learned that not everyone feels the same way. Some people feel immobilized when they try to make their home a place that feels signifi cant and unique to them. But I want everyone to fi nd a way to love the home they’re in.
Why did you include your Waco, Texas, farmhouse in the book? Our farmhouse represents all that I’ve learned over the years—every design failure and every win that I’ve experienced along the way. I’ve tried to make it a place where everyone in our family feels well-represented and inspired, where Chip and I can truly rest and where our kids can create and their young imaginations can grow. Our home isn’t perfect, but it’s our story that you see all around us there.
