BEING OF ADVANCED YEARS IS NOT A CURSE – BUT
A BLESSING FROM GOD
By: Fr. O’Dell
Not long ago, I was watching a documentary on poverty. The commentator was
talking about how difficult it is for people beyond the age of 50 to leave their current
jobs and to get hired in a new position. In fact, he claimed that it was almost an impossi-
ble situation. The reporter said that people in their 50’s are: “Too young to retire and too
old to hire.” Unfortunately, this is but one example of a problem that until 1970 was not
even identified – the problem of AGEISM. Ageism is the bias or prejudice that is ap-
plied to “older” people that claims that they are no longer a valuable asset to society and
that their skills and talents are both expendable and outmoded.
If this were the only example of prejudice it would be bad enough – but hun-
dreds of examples exist in our society that openly discriminate against those of ad-
vanced years. Some of them include: the fact that many elderly people are living below
the poverty line and are not able to adequately meet their nutritional and housing need
because their social security benefits are too low; the fact that older people are regularly
discriminated against when it comes to jobs, insurance, social services, transportation
and a variety of other life necessities, that people of advanced years are often unable to
procure needed medical and pharmaceutical products for their health and welfare be-
cause they lack insurance or financial resources. The list goes on and on. I’d like to
spend just a minute or two exploring some of the more blatant myths we entertain about
aging and how they betray a lack of honoring the lives of those of advanced years.
First, there is the myth that the elderly are FRAIL. Certainly, some elderly
people are frail, but many of them are vibrant, full of energy and even fierce. When we
stereotype all people of advanced years as “frail” we are failing to acknowledge the
contributions that most of them can continue to make in our society. When we assign
them the category of being frail, we also see them as feeble and unable to do even the
most elementary task before them. I have known a lot of people that are getting older
(myself included) that are filled with an energy that is often astounding. Consider some
of these folks: Mohr Keet from South Africa made his first bungee jump at 96, John
Glenn last went into space at age 77, Gladys Burill ran a marathon at age 84 – pretty
awesome don’t you think?
Second, there is the myth that most elderly people are DISABLED. Again,
some older people have become disabled because of illness or injury, but most elderly
people are far from disabled. Because we often stereotype people of advanced years as
being disabled, we also label them as impaired, withered, useless, over the hill – and
because we see the elderly in this way, we discount the potential contributions they can
make to the welfare of our culture and society. Consider these folks: Lt. Col. James
Warren (Ret) – one of the original Tuskegee Airmen who was a navigator, but earned
his pilot license at age 87 and Christopher Plummer who earned an Oscar for a role he
played when he was 87. Amazing!
Third, is the myth that the elderly are FORGETFUL. Of course, what we mean
by that is that they are no longer mentally with it. Because we may see them in this light
we tend to avoid them and their advice believing that it is really not worth our time lis-
tening to them. Again, some of the elderly are forgetful, but most know exactly what
they are doing. What about Dr. Leila Denmark a physician that retired from practice at
age 103, or Bertha Wood who published her first novel at 100, or Ronald Reagan who
was serving as President of the United States when he was nearly 80 years of age.
That’s fantastic!
Because we have so many stereotypes about what it means to be of advanced
years, we cheat ourselves out of benefiting from the talents and contributions of those
who are entering their eighth decade of life. We fail to make use of their advice and
their wisdom – as a result we are the poorer for it. Further, our stereotypes can also
make us less patient, less open, less charitable when it comes to dealing with those of
advanced years. That can even lead to incidents of abuse and mistreatment.

LENT for LIFE—ELDER ABUSE In Proverbs 23 God tells us not to despise our mothers when they are old. "Jesus help us to provide for our elders as they grow old...help us to value them, to see how much they need us at this time in their lives
as we needed them when we were babies/children. Help us to care for all those who need us as long as their journey continues on this earth."

As Christians, we are called to remember what the Lord gave us in the Fourth Com-
mandment when He said: “Honor your father and mother so that it will go well with
you in life.” That also goes for our “mothers and fathers” who are of advanced years.
Honoring the elderly is really about honoring life.
St. Therese is now using MailChimp to send out bulk emails; ie. Lent for LIFE, Prayer Requests, etc. Since MailChimp is a marketing tool, those emails often end up in the “Promotions” section of your email inbox. We have sent
several emails via MailChimp, so please make sure you are receiving them!
