4 9 BUFFALO COURIER-EXPRESS, Wednesday, June SI, 1967
PM. Basal,, r - -
JFfiat's Netu, Harry? T V E GOT DISTRESSING NEWS, Sam" Honest Harry said.
"Thert'i a strong chance that, the Ft. Erie Jockey Club, which Is scheduled to throw open its gates for a 36-day stand a week from Monday . . . won't.
*I learn last night from my Toronto spy, Big Mike, thai ths horsemen in Ontario — both the thoroughbred and the standardbred people — are bickering with the Jockey dub Limited, the outfit which controls racing at all five Ontario tracks.
"The bickering, of course, is over money. 'The horsemen have issued an ultimatum. They have stated
that unless their demands for additional purse money are met, all racing in Ontario will come to a screeching halt Saturday, July 1 — which is closing day for the runners at Woodbine and the trotters at Garden City Raceway.
"HARNESS HORSEMEN, ALONG WITH the boss of the thoroughbred people — Butch Taylor, president of the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Assn. — met Monday night, In Barn Six at Garden City Raceway, and mapped their battle plans.
"Harness horsemen plan to battle for 46.5 per cent of the Jockey Club's share of the parimutuel betting handle — an Increase of 8.6 per cent. For the first 120 days of the harness racing season they have received 37,1 per cent.
"The Jockey Club has offered a daily increase of $1,000 in purse money — from $12,500 to $13,500. The harness horsemen have refused the offer, through their representative — Les Ehr-lick. president of the Ontario Harness Horsemen's Assn.
" 'The Jockey Club's offer,' Ehrlick said Monday night, *is nothing more than a grab-bag being thrown out to us.' Then Ehrlick emphasized that the horsemen want 46.5 per cent — 'not a grab-bag.'
"EHRLICK AND THE THOROUGHBRED man, Butch Taylor, stated that all the horsemen — both runners and trotters — want a written contract with the Jockey Club . . . a conract at the 4*6.5 per cent rate.
" This no-contract bit,' Butch Taylor said, 'is a whim of the Jockey dub chairman, E. P. Taylor. Mr. Taylor signs contracts with almost everyone, including concessionaires who handle the parking lots at the tracks.'
'"You can't send a mare to Mr. Taylor's breeding farm without a contract,' Butch Taylor went on. 'Heck . . . without a contract . . . a fellow who wants to have one of his mares bred couldn't get through the gate at Windfields Farm.'

"THEN EHRLICK, THE HARNESS horsemen's boss, took over. Sam. 'It's been degrading the way the Jockey Club has treated us horsemen in previous negotiations and agreements,' he said. 'The horsemen always seem to get the short end of the stick.'
"Ehrlick pointed out that the Jockey Club, due to the current dispute, has refused to send out stall applications to horsemen for the July 3 harness meet at Greenwood Raceway — a procedure which usually is tended to three weeks prior to the opening of a meeting.
" The Jockey Club is out of line in refusing to send out the applications,* Ehrlick said. "They're holding a hammer over our heads by doing that — and they're also violating an agreement we already have with them.'
"BUTCH TAYLOR SAID THE thoroughbred people will go along with whatever the harness people decide to do. 'We are sick and tired of this constant bickering with the Jockey Club,' Taylor said. 'And we, the thoroughbred people, are holding a drastic-action meeting at the Royal York next Monday.*
" T am certain that none of us will race — thoroughbred people and standardbred people, I mean — until both groups have a percentage contract.'

Tom McGinnis and Baker's JJohn Delecki—head the Msgr. Martin Catholic Assn. All-Bishop Smith League baseball team picked exclusively for The Courier-Express by Smith coaches.
McGinnis twirled the gem of the area high school season May 23 with a perfect game in a 10-0 victory over Mindszenty of Dunkirk.
Delecki, an outfielder, not only had the top batting average, but led in RBI with 19, shared the hits lead with 21 and the doubles pace with five.
Walsh of Olean, co-champion
at 10-4 with Notre Dame of Ba-tavia,' has the most first-team ail-stars. Pitcher Dan Metzler, battery-mate Bill Welch and third baseman Kevin Cruess were selected.
Notre Dame, third-place Baker (7-7) and St. Francis (5-9) each placed two players. Representing the Batavians are second baseman Larry Conte and outfielder Bill Sutherland.
Shortstop Ron Rudnick joins Delecki as Baker's entry. Sound-alikes Mike Klodzinski, a first-baseman, and Tom Rudzinski, an outfielder, made it from St. Francis.
Metzler, one of five juniors on the team, put together a 6-1 record in leading Walsh, as he did in the basketball and football seasons. He struck out 81 while walking just 13 in 56 innings.
Welch batted home 12 runs with 20 hits and f i n i s h e d second in the batting race at .426. Cruess hit .340 and starred defensively.
Like Delecki and Welch, Notre Dame's combination of Conte and Sutherland broke the .400 barrier. Conte batted .420, tied Delecki for the hits lead (21), drove in 15 runs and scored 11.
Sutherland hit .404 and shared
"So the battle lines are drawn, Sam. The horsemen are Insisting on a contract — and the Jockey Club people are insisting that they'll have nothing to do with a contract.
"So I'm terribly worried — because if they don't kiss and make up, my entire summer will be ruined."
"You're always thinking of yourself, Harry," Sam the Immigrant said, thoroughly annoyed. "How about my summer?"

Sullivan Named ND Grid Coach Ed Sullivan, veteran football
and wrestling coach in the Msgr. Martin Catholic Assn., has been appointed to the head varsity grid post at Notre Dame of Batavia.
Sullivan succeeds former UB star Bernie Fagan, who is expected to accept another football coaching position shortly. Sullivan was jayvee coach last year and had a 6-1 record. j
Well recognized as a successful wrestling pilot, Sullivan's teams at St. Mary's of Lancaster rolled up a 96-17 record in 10 years. He came to Notre Dame last fall and his varsity mat team won the league crown at 12-3 and took the All-Catholic title.
Sullivan also was a football assistant for 10 years at St. Mary's.. The former Hobart lacrosse star is an English teacher at ND. and reading consultant and teacher at Canisius College.
Fagan was ND's varsity grid coach two years. His first team won the Bishop Smith League title. Last season's Irish squad missed the crown on a one-point loss to Mindszenty of Dunkirk in a season-ending game between previously unbeaten teams.
The '65 Irish were 6-2. Last year's team put together a 5-2 record. Sullivan also was assistant track coach under Fagan this spring. A new head track coach will be appointed.

the two-base-hit lead with Delecki (five). He also had 13 RBI on 19 hits and scored 10 runs. He was picked as an outfielder, but his mound work was more significant in ND's co-title campaign.
Bill compiled .an 8-2 record, best in the league. He realized another league peak with 104 strikeouts while issuing 24 walks in 75 innings. Crack Shortstop
Rudnick was a fielding titan at shortstop, batted .294 and rapped Baker's only home run of the season.
Rudzinski hit .362 for eighth place among Smith batting leaders. Klodzinski's average was .341. He drove across 12 tallies.
Conrad's 65 Ties SS Mark "The putts were dropping, and
when they're dropping it gives you a feeling of confidence."
Most will attest that it takes more than confidence, but that's the way 15-year-old Dennis Conrad summed up his sensational round of 65 at South Shore's par-71 country club Tuesday.
Conrad, a Canisius High School sophomore, fired six birdies and 12 pars for his 33-32—65 which tied the course record set in July, 1947, by former pro Leo Shea.
Tuesday wasn't just a glamour day for the young Conrad, either. He is presently the district Boys champion. Last year he finished runner-up in the New York State Boys championship.
The feat didn't seem to impress Conrad's 16-year-old playing partner, Bob Zeman.
"He's always around par," said the West Seneca High senior. "Today he was just a little better.*'
Conrad's previous low was a 69, which he carded a year ago on South Shore's 6,654-yard course.

By PHIL RANALLO McByrd, the brilliant 3-year-old
pacer, gave his legion of backers goose pimples Tuesday night in the main event at Buffalo Raceway — a $3,500 division of the Tar Boy Series Pace.
The fans sent McByrd away at the prohibitive odds of l-to-10. They wagered a total of $8,889 on the race — and $6,470 of it was bet on the bay streak, McByrd.
And when starter Charles Coon said "Go," McByrd got away on a break.
The crowd gasped. McByrd's driver, Gerry Kaz-
maier, did not lose his cool, however. He checked McByrd and, in a second or two, the colt was back on gait — but was at least eight or nine* lengths off the lead.
Kazmaier clucked to McByrd immediately — and the colt uncorked a sensational move. He flashed past his rivals going down the backstretch and grabbed the lead at the quarter. No More Problems
It was merely a buggy-ride for Kazmaier the rest of the way. McByrd went on to win with com> plete authority—by five lengths over Brooks Brother.
He paced the mile in 2:044s, three seconds over the season Raceway mark of 2:01*/'5 he established a week ago. He paid $2.20 for win and $2.20 for place. There was no show betting.
The victory was McByrd's ninth in 14 races this season. He picked up a purse of $1,925 for his owners
Phillies Clip Luckless Mets
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Right-hander Larry Jackson continued his mastery of the New York Mets Tuesday night, blanking them on only one hit— a second inning double by Tommy Davis—as the Philadelphia Phillies breezed to a 4-0 victory.
The victory gave the 36-year-old Jackson an 18-0 lifetime mark against New York. Only San Francisco's Juan Marichal has done better against the Mets, having beaten them 19 times in 19 decisions.
Davis led off the second Inning with a double off the scoreboard in right center field, but Jackson permitted only two other Mets to reach base in posting the second one-hitter of his career. In 1964, while pitching for the Chicago Cubs, he stopped Cincinnati on one hit.

Dancing Rocket and Jupiter, the finest juvenile pacers on the grounds, will meet in tonight's headliner—a division of the $3,750 Henry T. Adios Series for 2-year-olds.
Dancing Rocket is 5-for-4 for his young career, his lone defeat—by a head—having been inflicted by Jupiter a week ago in a non-betting stakes engagement.
Hoof Beats — Clever Ina won Tuesday's opener, leading all the way as she trimmed Charm Tag by IH lengths. Dave Vance handled the $4.20 winner . . . Then Kathy Adios, handled by Dick Welch, popped at $31.40 to round out a 3-3 daily double worth $121.20. Kathey Adios just lasted, withstanding High Carat's bid by a nose . . . In the third, Murray Waples piloted Dora Jo Diplomat ($6.20) to a nose decision over Armco Dream . . . The fourth went to Griffith Hanover ($4.20). The gelding, driven by Les Turcotte, won handily—by 1% lengths over Wild wood Elaine . . . Pro Top became the night's fourth successful favorite when he whipped Boadicea by two lengths in the sixth. Vince Aquino drove Pro top, which paid $3.60 . . . Sonny Mac surprised at $19.20 in the seventh. Mervin Kirkness brought the gelding home a nose before Blue Braid.
Milanie Hanover ($8.40) closed strongly between horses for a length victory in the eighth. Lookout Chief, the place horse, was claimed for $1,500 by Park Appliance Inc. of Buffalo . . . Driver Aquino doubled with Go Silver in the ninth, the gelding getting up in the final strides to nail Donna's Cape by a neck . . . Jarvis Ra B., owned by Joseph and Eleanor Tom of Buffalo, grabbed the 10th by a length and paid $16.40.
