    Project management is the application ofknowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project

    activities to meet project requirements.

    Project managementis accomplished throughprocesses, using project management

    knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques thatreceive inputs and generate outputs.

    Process and its CategoriesProcess and its Categories

    A process is a set of interrelated actions and activities thatare performed to achieve a pre-specified set of products,results, or services.

    The project processes fall into one of two major categories:

    The project management processes common to most projectsmost of the time are associated with each other by theirperformance for an integrated purpose.

    Product-oriented processes specify and create the project'sproduct. Product-oriented processes are typically defined by theproject life cycle (discussed in Section 2.1) and vary by application

    area. Project management processes and product-oriented

    processes overlap and interact throughout the project.

    Groups

    Initiating Process Group. Defines and authorizes the projector a project phase.

    Planning Process Group. Defines and refines objectives, andplans the course of action required to attain the objectives andscope that the project was undertaken to address.

    Executing Process Group. Integrates people and otherresources to carry out the project management plan for theproject.

    Monitoring and Controlling Process Group. Regularlymeasures and monitors progress to identify variances from theproject management plan so that corrective action can be

    taken when necessary to meet project objectives. Closing Process Group. Formalizes acceptance of the

    product, service or result and brings the project or a projectphase to an orderly end.

    3.2.1. Initiating Process Group3.2.1. Initiating Process Group The Initiating Process Group consists of the processes that

    facilitate the formal authorization to start a new project or a

    project phase. Initiating processes are often done external to the projects

    scope of control by the organization or by program or portfolioprocesses .
