Check carefully the hand in date and the instructions given with the assignment. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Ensure that you give yourself enough time to complete the assignment by the due date. Don’t leave things such as printing to the last minute – excuses of this nature will not be

accepted for failure to hand in the work on time? You must take responsibility for managing your own time effectively. If you are unable to hand in your assignment on time and have valid reasons such as illness,

you may apply (in writing) for an extension. (See your Student Handbook for details.) Failure to achieve at least a PASS grade will result in a REFERRAL grade being given. Non-submission of work without valid reasons will lead to an automatic REFERRAL. You

will then be asked to complete an alternative assignment on next semester. Take great care that if you use other people’s work or ideas in your assignment, you properly

reference them, using the HARVARD referencing system, in you text and any bibliography, otherwise you may be guilty of plagiarism. If you are caught plagiarising you could have your grade reduced to A REFERRAL or at worst you could be excluded from the course.

The Waduge Woodworking Company is a small-to-medium sized custom furniture and

cabinet making company, with head-office and a spacious plant site at Industrial Estates,

Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. It’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer is Chaminda Waduge now

in his late-sixties. His wife Mrs. Soma Waduge, being an aggressive business woman and

somewhat younger than her husband, now effectively runs the company.

Chaminda Waduge is affectionately known to all as "Wadoo" and so the company is

generally known as "Wadoo's". Chaminda, after an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker, started

his small furniture manufacturing business back in 1974 and he and his wife moved to their

present location in 1979. The company quickly gained a reputation for attractively designed

and well constructed furniture, using imported hardwoods and indigenous softwoods for its

products. Wadoo's now produces custom furniture to order, several lines of furniture for

wholesaler/retailers, and a number of variations of standard kitchen and bathroom cabinets,

including units made to order.

Over the years the Chaminda’s buisness continued to prosper and built up a loyal staff and

work force. More recently their son, Namal Waduge, has joined the company's management

after having obtained a commerce degree at the University of Colombo. At Namal Waduge's

insistence, lured by longer production runs and higher and more consistent mark-ups, the

company has embarked on a project to subcontract work supplying and installing counter-

tops, cabinets and similar fixtures for new commercial construction. To date, Wadoo's has

established a well-founded reputation for supplying millwork to the construction industry.
