Almost all building heating systems are based on burning natural gas. Typically, the most energy intense
unit in the HVAC system is the make-up air unit (see Table 1) which uses as much as five times the
natural gas of a standard unit. While plentiful, the cost of natural gas is rising. Even though natural gas
burns twice as clean as coal and other fossil fuels, it still contributes to climate change through CO2
emissions. The challenge is to improve the gas heating efficiency which will reduce operating costs and
climate change impact.
The SolutionPrice’s new line of high efficiency indirect fired
units can help reduce operating costs by 11%
with a less than two year payback. Traditional gas
heat units are only 80% efficient, meaning 20%
of the available heat in the natural gas is going
up the vent stack. The stack temperature on a
traditional unit can be over 500°F – that’s heat
that’s not available for the building and higher CO2
emissions that lead to climate change. The Price
line of high efficiency units have an impressive
stack temperature of only 100°F, and they are 90%
efficient so almost all of the heat released during
combustion is used in the building.

PMI-IF-H High Efficiency Units
At the heart of the high efficiency unit is the new
indirect fired convoluted tube furnace. The furnace
includes a specially designed heat exchanger to
squeeze as much of the heat from combustion as
possible and transfer it to the supply air stream.
The furnace is constructed from stainless steel
and other corrosion-resistant materials to provide
reliability and longevity.
Indirect Fired Design
The furnace is indirect fired, meaning no products
of combustion enter the supply air. This helps
maintain good indoor air quality. The burners are
modulating which also allows for great temperature
control and comfort.
The 90% furnace can be used in Price’s custom
rooftop unit platform, allowing almost any
configuration of components and variable
geometry. Single and dual path energy recovery is
also available (see unit configuration). Up to four
furnaces can be used in a 2 by 2 arrangement
providing up to 1440 kBtu/h of capacity.

Unit Configuration
The following components can be configured in almost any arrangement to meet your building requirements. Condensate Management
Applying the Price high efficiency furnace is
no different than any other gas heat product
except for condensate. As the high efficiency
furnace extracts the heat, the water vapor in
the combustion gas starts to condense. This
also happens with other high efficiency gas heat
products such as home furnaces and condensing
boilers.
If the equipment is roof mounted in a climate
where freezing conditions may occur, the
management of the condensate is critical. Price
recommends a drain inside the building under the
unit. The condensate can be routed down through
the curb to the drain. If the application requires the
condensate drain line to be exposed to freezing
conditions, field-supplied heat tracing is required.
Price offers an optional neutralizing kit to raise the
PH of the condensate where local codes require
it. The kits can be factory mounted in the unit or
shipped loose for field installation.
