Why?
• In 2007 CalPERS first announced plans for a new computer system to be used by members and employers
• For CalPERS: a new whiz-bang website my|CalPERS
• For us: a whole lotta work
A new way of reporting
• New file format for reporting• XML – Yikes! What’s that?
• New data elements• Lots of them!
Who will do all this work?
• We’re not in this alone – whew!• SGHE California Solution Center agreed
to develop new programs and processes• Focus group was formed to help• Several schools volunteered to meet
biweekly for WebEx webinars

The Work Begins
• C3SC team in place• Focus group in place• Technical ToolKit from PERS

• Phone conferences with PERS
What we did
• Went through the PERS documentation, data element by data element
• Decided where on existing forms to store new data to be collected
• Agreed on design of new form to display PERS data
• Created new tables, forms, etc.• Tested first versions of software
Out with the old
• Not really.
• Old stuff still there (PDAPERS, PDPPERS) but no longer relevant

Not Quite The End
• Software delivered, but…• Still finding some glitches• Solution Center working on it
• No worries - CalPERS is having problems too
Are we glad we did it?
• Of course!• We gained insight into the process of
program development• We enjoyed a sense of camaraderie with
members of the focus group. • We have a feeling of accomplishment!
