    Projects come in a wide assortment of shapes and sizes:

    Large or small

    a.Installing a new subway system, which may cost more than $1billion and take 10 to 15 years to complete, is a project

    b. Preparing a report of monthly sales figures, which may take youone day to complete, is a project

    Involving many people or just you

    a. Training all 10,000 of your organizations staff in a new affirmativeaction is a project

    b. Rearranging the furniture and equipment in your office is a project

    Projects come in a wide assortment of shapes and sizes:

    Business-related or personal

    a.Conducting your organizations annual blood drive is a project

    b. Having a dinner party for 15 people is a project

    No matter what the individual characteristics of your project are, youdefine it by the same three ingredients: outcomes, start and end dates,

    and resources. The information you need to plan and manage yourproject is the same, although the ease and the time to develop it maydiffer. The more thoroughly you plan and manage your projects, themore likely you are to succeed.

    What Exactly Is NOT a Project?

    Project is contrast to the operations of an organization. Theoperational work is the ongoing, repetitive set of activities that sustainthe organization. Examples of ongoing operations include the following:

    Processing customer orders

    Performing accounts receivable and accounts payable activities

    Executing daily manufacturing orders
