It pays to use safety technology
The protection of man andmachine through the targetedcontrol of hazardousmovements, immense costsavings thanks to feweraccidents, reduced downtimesand fewer production losses –these are real benefits that youcan enjoy when you use safecontrol technology from Pilz.
The PNOZ-range of safety relaysis one of the cornerstones ofsafe automation at Pilz. It wasback in 1987 that Pilz developeda product to protect both manand machine: the firstemergency stop relay PNOZ –the synonym for safety relays.Other applications followed, andthe combination of technicalexpertise and innovative ideasproduced safety relays to coverall technical safety requirementseconomically. In addition to theclassic E-STOP function, Pilzcan now supply units to monitorsafety gates, light barriers, two-hand controls, pressure mats, muting functions and muchmore.

Safety assessment inaccordance with EN 954-1
According to the standardEN 954-1, safety-relatedrequirements in controltechnology can be dividedinto five categories, gradedaccording to the “severity ofinjury”, “exposure time to thehazard” and the “possibilityof avoiding the hazard”.
The current status
of approvals is
available in the
corresponding data
sheets, available at
www.pilz.com.
Example risk assessment.
Safety assessment inaccordance with EN 954-1
S. Severity of injury
S1 Slight(normally reversible) injury(i.e. cut or bruise)
S2 Serious (normally irrever-sible) injury
F. Frequency and/orexposure time to hazard
F1 Seldom to quite often
F2 Frequent to continuous
P. Possibility of avoiding thehazard(generally related to thespeed and frequency withwhich the hazardous partmoves and to the distancefrom the hazardous part)

solution for each application
1. Number of safety functions
1.1 You require four or moresafety functions, which youwish to cover in yourapplication. It does notmatter whether the safetyfunctions you need to coverare identical or different.
1.2 You require less than4 safety functions.
2. Outputs that can be linkedlogically versus volt-freeoutputs
2.1 Outputs that can be linkedare particularly useful in yourapplication because logicAND/OR connections enableyou to connect as many unitsas necessary in series andyou also save the additionalwiring at the output.
2.2 You require volt-free outputsfor your application / youneed to switch AC loads.
3. Compact safety relays versusmodular output contacts
3.1 Compact safety relays aremore appropriate for yourapplication if you only needto cover a limited number ofsafety functions.
3.2 Modular output contacts canbe adapted flexibly to yourrequirements. If necessary itis easy to expand the numberof contacts required. So youonly pay for what youactually need and you reduceyour costs.

Easy-to-use diagnostics makethe units cost-effective
PNOZelog has extensivediagnostic options. Firstly, viathe simple LED display andstatus output, which enable theeasiest possible on-sitediagnostics, without additionaltools. Secondly, via an integraldiagnostic interface to the PLC.If several PNOZelog units areused, all you need is one PLCoutput and one PLC input foreach unit that you use. Driversare available for all commonPLC systems. The detailedinformation that is gained aboutthe products’ system statusreduces machine downtimes andenables any potential errorsources to be removedimmediately.
Complete safety functionsthrough logic function links
Units in the PNOZelog productrange can be linked via logicoperations to form completesafety functions. AND/ORoperations are both available. The use of logic functionsmeans that the output requiresno additional wiring. Both

outputs on the PNOZelog unitsare freely available. As manyunits as necessary can beconnected in series, removingthe need for additional devices.
If the E-STOP is operated, motor A is switched off immediately AND motor B
is switched off with a time delay.
If the safety gate is opened, only motor B is switched off, with a time delay.

“2 in 1” – The bifunctionalPNOZelog
Bifunctional PNOZelog safetyrelays form an extremelycompact safety unit. It ispossible to cover two safetyfunctions simultaneously withjust one unit. The safetyfunctions are already “AND”-linked internally. Each safetyfunction comes with a separatesignal output. You save onwiring, because you only needone unit for two safety functions. With a width of just 22.5 mm,the space requirement in thecontrol cabinet is reduced to aminimum, while maximumfunctionality is maintained.

Muting is the safe, automaticand temporary suspension of anelectrosensitive protectivedevice. Muting is frequently usedto transport material into and outof a hazardous area. Mutingsensors are used to detect thismaterial safely. In the process, mainly light barriers or lightcurtains are temporarilysuspended, while muting lampssignal their status. The PMUT X1P safety relay hasinputs for all types of mutingsensors, such as inductiveinitiators, proximity switches,

light barriers and mechanicalswitches. On the PMUT X1P,sensor technology can beconnected directly, without usingterminal blocks. It is possible toconnect light curtains of anymake, using contacts orsemiconductor technology. The integral ability to switchmuting lamps automatically
guarantees high availability andsafety, because the PMUT X1Pmonitors the muting lamp. If afault occurs, the unitautomatically switches to asecond lamp. The defective lampcan be exchanged duringoperation.

PNOZpower modular safety system – Switchi nSwitching up to 16 A – noproblem
The modular PNOZpower safetysystem is designed formonitoring E-STOPs, safetygates and light barriers.PNOZpower can switch currentsof up to 16 A AC/DC per contact. An overall breaking capacity of40 A is available per module. Ineach case, external contactorsand contactor combinations areno longer required. The basemodule processes the inputs; theoutput modules are specificallymatched to the respective load. The number and capacity of therequired safety contacts can bescaled, depending on theapplication. A maximum of 4modules can be connected tothe base unit. Modules are wiredto the base unit via an internalbus system.

Safety technology made simplePSEN – The complete solutionthat’s safe and approved
The PSEN non-contact,magnetic safety switch is usedfor position monitoring andsafety gate monitoring; inconjunction with the followingevaluation devices it provides asafe, complete solution from Pilz– with BG approval inaccordance with EN 60 947-5-3for applications up to Cat. 4 ofEN 954-1. Just one single safetyswitch is required.
Plug-in terminals with cageclamp or screw connection
Units with plug-in terminals offera great advantage in terms ofboth economy and safety. Theuse of plug-in terminals enablesshort commissioning and servicetimes. With plug-in terminals, additional functionalities canalso be implemented in morecompact designs. Smallerhousing sizes mean morecapacity inside the controlcabinet. Coded connectors
ensure that units can beexchanged quickly, withoutproblem and without the risk oferror; they also increasehandling security and thereforereduce downtimes. Cables canalso be pre-prepared.The cost-intensive process oflabelling wires is no longernecessary, as the cables cannotbe inserted incorrectly.
