Vol. XLVIII No. 9 September 2010
NEXT MEETING SATURDAY, September 25, 2010 BRIAR CLUB
President’s Message
Elizabeth and I made it through a pacemaker
implant on August 19 and a “do-over” the
next day (a heart wire pulled out).
Separately, the second day there was a
removal of my “porta-cath” (used for chemo
treatments). Three trips to the operating
room in two days wiped me out, so I played
hooky on the August luncheon meeting.
Thanks to Bill Taylor for conducting the meeting in my absence.
News from Wayne Ritter about his beloved Juanita is critical.
Wayne has notified the Board that he must resign to devote
himself to Juanita's recovery. He asks for your prayers that a
miracle of miracles may bring her back to good health.
I understand we had several new faces at the luncheon.
Welcome, and please see their photos in this issue. This is
encouraging that members are being found and encouraged to
join our chapter. The first year is a real bargain (see Membership
Chairman Ervin Eggleston [281-494-6265] for details).
The 72nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) has safely
returned from its Iraq tour. So far there is no report of ny combat
deaths or even accident fatalities. Please disregard my report of a
large welcome home ceremony for September. My very next
e-mail from the 72nd IBCT stated "sometime in November."
That creates no problem for us veterans; the military is notorious
for changing plans. Be on the lookout for a "big show" in
November.
Elizabeth and I thank you for your concern and prayers during
my recent heart slow down and pacemaker implant. Already
signs of strong recovery are detected. Elizabeth has been strong
support during the downtime. And thanks for attending our
luncheons. We do our best to provide a good meal and
interesting speaker.

From Our Chaplain
SHALOM! PEACE BE
WITH YOU!
Over the years the Holy
Bible has been a source for
Comfort and Encouragement
to me, especially during
trying times. God’s word is
most appropriate and
applicable this month as we
commemorate the 9th
Anniversary of that terrible
and tragic date; 9-11-01!
LEST WE EVER FORGET!
For our members of the
Hebrew Faith, I offer the
following verses from the
Old Testament:
Psalm 91:14-16: The Lord
says, “I will rescue those
who love me. I will protect
those who trust in my name.
When they call on me, I will
answer; I will be with them
in trouble. I will rescue and
honor them. I will reward
them with long life and give
them my salvation.”
Psalm 103:3: “Know that the
Lord is God. He made us,
and we belong to Him; we
are His people, the sheep he
tends.”
For our members of the
Christian Faith, I offer the
following verses from the
New Testament:
Matt. 11:28-30: “If you are
tired from carrying heavy
burdens, come to me and I
will give you rest. Take the
yoke I give you. Put it on your
shoulders, and learn from me. I am
gentle and humble, and you will find
rest. This yoke is easy to bear, and
this burden is light.”
1 Peter 5:7: “God cares for you, so
turn all your worries over to him.”
GOD BLESS Y’ALL!

Report of August Speaker
Nannette
Metoyer, our
August speaker,
attended with
her husband
Lemont.
Nannette owns
“Cruisecats”
travel agency,
and she has
been cruising
since 1995. Nannette is sponsoring
the December cruise for MOAA,HA.
The time is growing short for
purchasing ($10/each), as the
drawing for the cruise for a lucky
couple will be at the September
luncheon.
The winners of the cruise will be in
an ocean-view stateroom. Carnival's
Ecstasy will depart Galveston on
Monday, December 6, for a 5-day
cruise to Cozumel and Progresso.
You may view the tours offered at
each port at www.carnival.com.
Off-ship tours are an added charge.
Nannette books cruises all over the
world. She suggested scheduling
your trip to Europe and plan a
transatlantic cruise home rather than
returning by air. The new ships
coming to Galveston in the fall of
2011 will be cruising from Europe.
Those new ships that will be assigned
to Galveston from fall 2011 to spring
2012 are Carnival’s Magic and
Mariner of the Seas. The present
ships assigned to Galveston (Voyager
of the Seas and Ecstasy) will
move to New Orleans during
the time that Magic and
Mariner will be in Galveston.
You can find Nannette’s ad on
the back page of the MOAA
Membership Directory. She
has been a faithful supporter
of our Directory for five
years. To contact Nannette for
information and/or
reservations:

George Walker, USA, has
been a MOAA-HA member
for about 20 years, but hasn’t
attended a meeting for some
time. He is Adjutant of the
Houston Chapter of the
Military Order of the World
Wars.
George’s great-great uncle,
James Clair Walker, was a
Confederate Lt. Col., 2nd
Texas, and a New Mexico
chapter of the SCV is named
for him. George’s father was
in the Flying Tigers.
Welcome back, George!
What a fantastic meeting! Be sure to
make your plans now to attend the
September 25 luncheon meeting. Our
President and Elizabeth will be back,
we will have the drawing for the
December Caribbean Cruise, and we
will have a great speaker and an
outstanding meal and fellowship.
Endowment Fund and
Houston Corps ofCadets
Well folks, we’re in the home
stretch. Only one month to go,
and we will have our lucky
winners. Remember: this is a
cruise for two, FIVE days,
Western Caribbean, 6
December 2010, leaving from
Galveston aboard Carnival
Cruise Lines.
There is still plenty of time to
purchase your $10 raffle
tickets, either through Martin
Harris or at the next luncheon
September 25th, before the
drawing, which will be held
as the last event of the day.
All of us who heard Nannette,
the Cruise Lady, speak at our
August meeting know how
nice this trip will be.
If you enjoyed this effort,
we’ll do it again next year.
Let me know your feelings.

Col Lee Lange, USMC (Ret),
who is Director, Council &

provided lunch for us at Rudi
Lechner’s on the special date
of August 18.
He is interested in our chapter
and what we are doing.
National knows who we are.
He shared his vast knowledge
with us, and all had a great
time and visit.
