Hello Friends!
Thank you all for the get well wishes. I am happy to report that I am recovering nicely from my second knee
replacement so I will see you at the meeting. Don’t forget, from now on the meetings will start half an hour
earlier, at 7 pm. So come early so you will have time to socialize and look at the plants for sale and raffle.
Our speaker on September 8 is Vern Bloch of Palm Bay Orchids and he will talk about “Nodosa”. Some of my
favorite orchids have come from Vern.
The weekend of September 10 and 11, Mounts Botanical Garden is hosting Everything Orchids: A Shady Affair Plant
Sale. Members may sell their own orchids at our booth for a 15% commission to OSPB. Shannon Skoulikas is chairperson of the plant sale, and she will be able to answer any questions at the next meeting. This is my gift plant from OSPB Christmas party 2015.
Your President,
Doris Happel

Hello OSPB,
Didn’t we have a good time at our 66th Anniversary Luau? I am so sorry if you missed it. But luckily Frank
and Tina took lots of pictures so I can share them with you. We had a good selection of Silent Auction plants
and the bidding got really revved up towards the end with everyone hurrying back to the plants they were
bidding on to see if their bid was still the final one. It was fun and no one got hurt in all the commotion.
Shannon and her team did a fantastic job of decorating and coordinating all the activities and the food. Park
Avenue Bar-B-Que is one of my favorites but I did miss tasting all the different dishes that our members
prepare. However it was nice to not have to worry about cooking and bringing a dish for the party. I’ve
gotten so lazy lately.

Everyone is so colorful. It was a great night.
I decided to hold the food drive over for
another month. We were a little bit light on
the donation. Please try to remember to bring
a can of food or some other food or hygiene
product along to the next meeting. To help
you remember, I will donate one of my orchids
for a raffle to all those who donate. If you
brought something to the last meeting just tell
me and you will be included in the raffle.
Our speaker for September 8th will be Vern Bloch. He will be bringing some really nice plants along for sale, so don’t
forget your checkbook. Vern retired from the Navy, as a captain, in 1987 after 28 years of service; first as a Navy pilot
and then in Research and Development. He attended his first orchid show in 1989 and 2 years later he was in the
orchid business selling as Palm Bay Orchid Range in Melbourne Beach. He continued with a real job until 1998 when
he retired for the second time. Growing orchids is less stressful than a real, paying job. Vern and Helen grow mainly
cattleya’s but they also grow other genera as well. They sold their business in 2004 but still sell orchids on a smaller
scale. He has traveled from the Carolina’s to the Key’s doing orchid presentations for societies. I know you are going to
enjoy his program on B. nodosa and its progeny. Bring a friend…!

I am in charge of keeping the building open, and if your birthday is in September, you are in charge of refreshments.
Happy Birthday to Frank Cianfrone, John Goehring, Dorothy Moore, Charline Nakamura, and Diane Patrick.
The meeting will start at 7:00 pm.
New Member--- Please help me welcome Brian Link to our OSPB family. We are so glad you
decided to join us Brian. We look forward to getting to know you better and sharing all of this
wonderful, orchid knowledge and excitement with you.
Everything Orchids: A Shady Affair, September 10 & 11 kicks off the orchid show season that will last through next May. Woo Hoo! It seems like forever since I’ve been to a show. Please sign up to work a 2 hour shift at the sale. See Shannon at the meeting or contact her at [email protected]
It’s that time again….. Cheryl Akey has another bus trip planned for October 15th. We will be
traveling to R.F. Orchids in Homestead for the East Everglades Orchid Society Show and Sale. The
cost is only $25. and although plans are still pending, there will be other stops in the Redlands
where orchid growers are very plentiful. This is always a fun trip. The show is not a big
extravagant affair but if you’ve never been to R.F. Orchids and seen his greenhouses and gardens,
you’ll be blown away by their grandeur. See Cheryl at the meeting and reserve your seat or
contact her at [email protected]
I hope many of you were able to take advantage of the going out of business sale of Mark Edlund’s, Orchid Acres . I sure had a good time there. I not only bought lots of plants but I bought 4 benches too. I think I’ll have enough space to last, oh…..maybe 2 years. After that I guess I’ll be having a sale. I know you all join me in wishing Mark the very best that life has to offer as he moves on to bigger and better things. He will remain in the area until sometime in February but then he plans to move to Hawaii. I think he will be at the Everything Orchids sale, so be sure to stop by and thank him for all the great information he has shared with us over the years and wish him well in his new adventure. It’s sad to lose another local grower.

Tuesday is Election Day. Be sure to take advantage of your right to vote. I have voted for some real stinkers in my time but at least if I vote I feel like I have the right to complain about them. Not voting? Then don’t complain about the way they are running the government. Educate yourselves on the issues and then vote. Not just for another pretty face. There are some really important issues at stake, especially when it comes to our water. VOTE ! That about covers it for this month. Be sure to come to the next meeting September 8th. Remember to bring a food
donation for the homeless. If you have something in bloom, bring it for ‘Show & Tell’. We love to see how you grow
your plants. Bring a Friend. Till then……
Happy Growing,
Patt Lindsey
