Bulletin Board
The Deacons have a bulletin board in the hallway for news about our church
members. From time to time we unintentionally miss an event or school function that
church members have participated in. If this happens, and your or another family member
“is in the news” please bring your picture/article to the church office. We want to share in
in your joys. After two weeks please feel free to take your submission home for your
scrapbook. If they are not removed we will assume they can be taken down. Thanks for
your help!

Summer days, summer nights are changing into cool-
er temperatures and along with that preparation for a season
of “fall” activities. The so-called “Christian Education Week”
in the church year kicks in on Sunday, September 13. I hope
you all had a wonderful summer and experienced and appre-
ciated God’s awesome goodness and grace.
Children’s Ministries this summer included VBS from June 14-18; a SonSpark Bible
activity on July 19; Water Park Day at Valley City followed by having pizza at Pizza Corner
on July 28. A Back-To-School Celebration on August 23.
September 13—Christian Education Week begins—Sunday School classes for
ages 3-middle school begin at 9 AM. Adult classes will also begin at 9 AM. Children ages 3-
5th grade will meet in the classrooms on the 2nd floor of the Christian Education wing. The
middle school will meet in the lower level in the room beside the parlor. The Bible Mile-
stone Celebration will be held in the worship service on September 13. Second graders en-
rolled in the Sunday School program will receive the ESV Grow Bible.
September 20—Sunday School classes at 9 AM.
September 28—Sunday School classes at 9 AM.
Sunday School Changes Everything by Henrietta C. Mears-Bestselling Author
of What the Bible Is All About and founder of Gospel Light
The story of Henrietta Mears as Christian Education Director at First Presbyterian
Church in Hollywood, California, is nothing short of miraculous. She built one of the largest
Sunday Schools in the world. She wrote a curriculum that was in such demand that she
founded a publishing company. Among her students were Richard Halverson and Bill
Bright. Among those she influenced profoundly is Billy Graham.
In her book, you find several examples of what she believed were unchanging ingre-
dients of successful ministry. Those ingredients can be boiled down into five main catego-
ries: (1) Meet Jesus: Life-changing ministry begins with a commitment to one thing:
“winning people to Christ and a commitment of life to Him.” Ministry must lead people to
Jesus. That’s what we are all about. We need to reaffirm this today just as much as we did in
the past. (2) The Bible: The Bible is one story—the story of Jesus. We believe that every
story in the Bible points to Jesus, and so should Sunday School. Successful ministries teach
people the Bible in ways that are relevant to each age and stage of life and in ways that are
sensitive to the spiritual seasons God has hard-wired into all of us. (3) Relationships: Suc-
cessful ministries recognize that spiritual growth happens best in the context of close person-
al relationships. It’s about people leading other people to Jesus. (4) Complete Plan: whatev-
er you do, whether it is small groups, Sunday School or Bible fellowship, great things begin
with great plans. Successful ministries have a plan from birth through adult. (5) Life
Change: The goal of ministry is changed lives. It is as much about the here and now as it is
about the future and eternity. (continued on page 6)

Deacon dialogue. . .
The Deacons are a group of men and women from our congregation that
have a heart to serve those in our church and community. The Deacons organize
a variety of activities by which they share the love and joy of Jesus Christ.
Our 'Giving Tree' has a wonderful crop of apples this year. They will be
ready to be picked on Sunday, September 6. Our apples are supporting Commu-
nity Action's "Week End Backpack for Kids" program. This program provides
supplemental foods for a child's diet over the weekend. Each Friday, participating schools provide
any child with a backpack filled with nutritious, non-perishable, easy open food items. Jamestown
had 4 schools participating in the program last year. They averaged 120 students per week last
year. Please pick an apple or two and provide the item written on the apples. If you buy a 'family'
size item, do not open and separate into smaller containers. Community Action cannot accept any
opened containers. We will be collecting our harvest during the month of September. A big
"THANK YOU" from Community Action and the students.
AND while you are shopping for your 'Giving Tree' item throw in another item or two for the
Community Action's Food Pantry. Our UPC shopping cart is empty. Community Action accepts
non-perishable food items, toiletries and/or diapers. You can find the shopping in the children's li-
brary, next to the nursery.
Those currently serving as Deacons include:
George Barnes Nancy Burgard Della Chisholm
Vicki Enger Dixie Lee Janet Miller
Mary Ellen Reimers Kayla Thoele Kim Thoele
Pam Van Dyke Yvonne Wegner Cindy Wermager
Sanctuary Circle
The Sanctuary Circle consists of church members that decorate our sanctuary with various
types of real and artificial flowers. They have been doing a beautiful job for us. But we need more
help. We have 3 open months for 2015 that need a volunteer or two (grab a friend) to decorate the
sanctuary. The months that are open are October, November and December. We have a good supply
of artificial flowers to make the decorating easy. If you have any questions or would like to help,
please call Nancy Burgard at 952-0051. You don't need a green thumb for this committee!

Another year of school means another year
of youth group! I can't wait to dive in and see
all that Jesus has planned for us this year as
we journey with Him and with each other.
We kicked off the year Wednesday, August
26 at the church with some great snacks and games and just hung out.
Good fun for all!
In September, we will continue with regular youth group on Wednesday
nights. See You at the Pole will take place on September 23rd at 7am -
middle schoolers, feel free to come over after prayer to grab some
breakfast at the church!
If you want to find updates about things going on at youth group, check
out the Facebook page: United Presbyterian Youth Group.
Praying for you always.
See you soon!

Pastor Nominating Committee
Please continue to pray for the PNC as they diligently continue their work in calling a new
pastor. We thank all of the members of this committee for their faithfulness.
Our PW meeting in May with Nancy
Fletcher at her lake home seems like a long time
ago. Now we look ahead to our September meeting. Faith and Hope Circles will meet to-
gether at the church on September 24 at 12:30. We'll begin the meeting with dessert and
coffee and then Diane Weispfenning and Char Enger will report to us about the PW Church-
wide Gathering they attended in Minneapolis in June. We've seen the bulletin board they
have displayed in the coffee room and we are anxious to hear more about their experienc-
es. Do plan to join us!
Also at this meeting we will introduce our new Bible study called "Come to the Wa-
ters". This study will focus on scriptures that tell the story of faith through water stories
from Genesis to Revelation. Judy Record Fletcher, the woman who wrote the study, was at
the Churchwide Gathering. Diane and Char were able to be a part of her presentation and
will bring us insights directly from the author.
On October 10 we will host in our church the Cluster meeting for the PWs in the southern
part of our Presbytery. This meeting will begin with coffee at 9:30 AM and will include
worship, Bible study and fellowship. The noon lunch will be catered. Registration fee will
be $10. All women are welcome and encouraged to come.
Doreen Larson will no longer be involved with the leadership for our PW. Many thanks
to Doreen for her years of faithful and dedicated service to our PW. She will be missed by
us all Edie Prentice, Moderator
Session Highlights for September 2015
Diane reported that Nancy Burgard is leading an effort for new banners in the sanctuary.
There was discussion about the Joos Funds that are available for this project.
Elizabeth Sherfy made a motion/2nd, “for Nancy Burgard, to proceed with getting
new banners for the church with monies from the Joos Fund, not to exceed 25% of
the monies currently in the fund, and to come to Session for approval, if the funds
are not sufficient.”
MOTION CARRIED
It was noted that the average monthly offerings is $15,000/month.
Diane Weispfenning made a motion/2nd, “to approve the following baptisms, to be
celebrated during worship on August 30, 2015. Lucas Leif Bollingberg, born May
13, 2015, at Jamestown, ND, child of Grant and Jennifer Bollingberg; Eliot Michael
Kopp, born June 6, 2015, at Grand Forks, ND, child of Alison Lynn Allmer and
Matthew Prescott Kopp; Rueben Jerome Szarkowski, born May 14, 2015, at Jame-
stown, ND, child of Tyler and Marcy Szarkowski with Jackie Tarpinian to be the
presiding Elder.”
MOTION CARRIED
Elizabeth Sherfy reported that the Christian Nurture Committee met and they recom-
mend that the church wait until March, 2016 before hiring an individual to replace
Doreen Larson, Children’s Ministries. There was discussion on improving the lines of
communication about church bulletin information with the office staff, noting that with-
out a pastor, timely communication is a challenge.
Elizabeth Sherfy reported that things are well organized for the beginning of Sunday
school this fall. The second graders will receive Bibles on September 13, 2015 during
the worship service.
Bill Parries reported that the Deacons have asked for help from the Elders with clean-up
after the potluck on September 13. The potluck is in celebration on the first day of Sun-
day school.
Dixie and Mark Lee, Sylvia Pringle, and Bill Parries have volunteered to clean the can-
dle holders that clamp on the pews.
Scott Bennett reported that he will be calling a membership meeting in September to re-
view the Membership Rolls.
RaeAnn Paulson report was given by Diane Weispfenning and Rev. Raum. It was re-
ported that the committee is active and working hard, but there is nothing concrete to
report at this time. Two people were interviewed and a third person will be brought to a
neutral pulpit the last part of September.

The family of Lorraine Derby appreciates your thoughts and prayers during this difficult
time. Thank you to everyone who made bars, worked to prepare food, coffee and clean-

Children’s Ministries (continued from page 3)
As Henrietta Mears wrote, “Hollywood is not the ideal spot on earth in which to build a
large and spiritual Sunday School, but God has seen fit to make it so…If it can be done in Hol-
lywood, it can be done anywhere.”
The church school, as the teaching arm of the Church, must be given its rightful place
in the life of every church if every church is to continue to be a living entity. We must know
that the Sunday School is the Church functioning in its educational task of teaching and train-
ing those who are to be its future members and leaders. Unless the Sunday School makes
Christ the center of its life and activity, it will never grip and hold young people. Our young
people need solid biblical teaching.
We have not put enough importance in our children. Have we realized the value and
possibilities of childhood? Our churches have spent millions building large sanctuaries, in-
stalling stages and stained-glass windows and the latest technology, which are to be enjoyed
once a week (if everything is working properly), but how much has the average church spend
yearly on its Sunday School? Have you considered these precious jewels to be of more worth
than bricks and stones? We should have every child in America in Sunday School. This is a
colossal task, but it is ours! Try for Jamestown, ND first! We can do it!
Sunday School is here to stay because it still works. It is “ big business” because it re-
mains centered on God’s business-Jack Eggar, President/CEO of Awana. Let’s get back to
God’s business!
In Christ’s love,
Doreen Larson, Coordinator of Children’s Ministries
