THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH

Маска красной смертиby Edgar Aa! "#$

(1842)

THE "Red Death" had long devastated the country.

No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous.Blood was its vatar and its seal !!the redness and thehorror of blood. There were sharp pains, and suddendiiness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, withdissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body andespecially upon the face of the victi#, were the pest

ban which shut hi# out fro# the aid and fro# thesy#pathy of his fellow!#en. nd the whole seiure, progress and ter#ination of the disease, were theincidents of half an hour.

But the Irince Irospero was happy and dauntless andsagacious. Jhen his do#inions were half depopulated,he su##oned to his presence a thousand hale and

light!hearted friends fro# a#ong the Knights andda#es of his court, and with these retired to the deepseclusion of one of his castellated abbeys. This was aneLtensive and #agnificent structure, the creation of the princeMs own eccentric yet august taste. strong andlofty wall girdled it in. This wall had gates of iron. The

courtiers, having entered, brought furnaces and #assyha##ers and welded the bolts. They resolved to leave#eans neither of ingress or egress to the suddeni#pulses of despair or of freny fro# within. Theabbey was a#ply provisioned. Jith such precautionsthe courtiers #ight bid defiance to contagion. The

eLternal world could taKe care of itself. n the

#eanti#e it was folly to grieve, or to thinK. The princehad provided all the appliances of pleasure. There were buffoons, there were i#provisatori, there were ballet!dancers, there were #usicians, there was Beauty, therewas wine. ll these and security were within. Jithout

was the "Red Death."

othic window looKed out upon a closed corridorwhich pursued the windings of the suite. Thesewindows were of stained glass whose color varied inaccordance with the prevailing hue of the decorationsof the cha#ber into which it opened. That at the easterneLtre#ity was hung, for eLa#ple, in blue !!and vividly

blue were its windows. The second cha#ber was purple in its orna#ents and tapestries, and here the panes were purple. The third was green throughout, andso were the case#ents. The fourth was furnished andlighted with orange !!the fifth with white !!the siLthwith violet. The seventh apart#ent was closely

shrouded in blacK velvet tapestries that hung all overthe ceiling and down the walls, falling in heavy foldsupon a carpet of the sa#e #aterial and hue. But in thischa#ber only, the color of the windows failed tocorrespond with the decorations. The panes here werescarlet !!a deep blood color. Now in no one of the

seven apart#ents was there any la#p or candelabru#,

a#id the profusion of golden orna#ents that layscattered to and fro or depended fro# the roof. Therewas no light of any Kind e#anating fro# la#p orcandle within the suite of cha#bers. But in thecorridors that followed the suite, there stood, opposite

to each window, a heavy tripod, bearing a braier offire that protected its rays through the tinted glass andso glaringly illu#ined the roo#. nd thus were produced a #ultitude of gaudy and fantasticappearances. But in the western or blacK cha#ber theeffect of the fire!light that strea#ed upon the darK

hangings through the blood!tinted panes, was ghastlyin the eLtre#e, and produced so wild a looK upon the

countenances of those who entered, that there were fewof the co#pany bold enough to set foot within its precincts at all.

But, in spite of these things, it was a gay and#agnificent revel. The tastes of the duKe were peculiar.

He had directed, in great part, the #oveablee#bellish#ents of the seven cha#bers, upon occasion

of this great feteW and it was his own guiding tastewhich had given character to the #asVueraders. Be surethey were grotesVue. There were #uch glare and glitter and piVuancy and phantas# !!#uch of what has been

since seen in "Hernani." There were arabesVue figureswith unsuited li#bs and appoint#ents. There were

delirious fancies such as the #ad#an fashions. Therewas #uch of the beautiful, #uch of the wanton, #uchof the biarre, so#ething of the terrible, and not a littleof that which #ight have eLcited disgust. To and fro inthe seven cha#bers there stalKed, in fact, a #ultitude of drea#s. nd these !!the drea#s !!writhed in and about,

taKing hue fro# the roo#s, and causing the wild #usicof the orchestra to see# as the echo of their steps. nd,anon, there striKes the ebony clocK which stands in thehall of the velvet. nd then, for a #o#ent, all is still, and all is silent save the voice of the clocK. The drea#s

are stiff!froen as they stand. But the echoes of thechi#e die away !!they have endured but an instant A and a light, half!subdued laughter floats after the# asthey depart. nd now again the #usic swells, and thedrea#s live, and writhe to and fro #ore #errily thanever, taKing hue fro# the #any!tinted windowsthrough which strea# the rays fro# the tripods. But to

the cha#ber which lies #ost westwardly of the seven, there are now none of the #asKers who ventureW for thenight is waning awayW and there flows a ruddier lightthrough the blood!colored panesW and the blacKness ofthe sable drapery appalsW and to hi# whose foot falls

upon the sable carpet, there co#es fro# the near clocK

of ebony a #uffled peal #ore sole#nly e#phatic thanany which reaches their ears who indulge in the #orere#ote gaieties of the other apart#ents.
