TYPES OF POEMS
A form of modern poetry that does not follow a set rhythm.
FREE VERSE
WARNINGInside everybody’s noseThere lives a sharp-toothed snail.So if you stick your finger in,He may bite off your nail.Stick it farther up inside,And he may bite your ring off.Stick it all the way, and heMay bite the whole darn thing off.
A poem whose shape or visual appearance contributes to its
meaning.
CONCRETE POEM
A poem created from words selected from public
communications (newspapers, magazines, menus, signs, etc.) and then re-arranged into lines
and stanzas.
FOUND POEM
A poem that expresses intense personal thoughts,
moods, or emotions.
LYRIC POEM
A narrative poem with a song-like form that usually tells of a love story, historical event, or
heroic tale.
BALLAD
A seventeen-syllable poem set out in three lines in a five-seven-five syllable
pattern. Haikus often capture a moment in
nature.
HAIKU
A fourteen-line poem that usually follows a set rhyme
scheme and rhythm.
