Every day nearly 7 million tons of water flows over the falls and heads north to Lake Ontario. The Niagara river marks the border between the United States and Canada. Although neither side can claim ownership of the falls they are actually easier to view from the Canadian side. The Canadian shore offers unobstructed views of the entire ex- panse of Niagara Falls. While the American side does not offer the scenic views, hotels and restaurants dot the landscape and offer a family friendly destination. Here are a few facts about the falls: The first reported honeymoon celebrated at Niagara Falls was in 1801 when Theodosia Burr, the daughter of future U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr and her new husband, Joseph Alston, traveled to Niagara Falls. Their description of the nat- ural beauty started a trend that continues today. • Mrs. Annie Taylor, a 63 year old widowed school teacher be- came the first person to survive a trip over the falls in a wooden barrell. As she emerged from her barrel, she report- edty said, “No one ought to ever do that again.”

• There are actually 3 waterfalls. Each of the waterfalls was given their names due to specific traits: The American Falls lies mostly on the US side of the border. Horseshoe Falls is by far the largest and is named because of its horseshoe shape, Lastly, Bridal Falls is a small waterfall named because it re-sembles a bridal veil.

• A Hydroelectric plant was built at he falls by Nikolai Tesla in 1888. Today enough electricity is created by the flowing wa-ter to power 3.8 million homes.

• Each year 30 million people visit Niagara Falls. One of the most popular attractions is the Maid of the Mist Boat cruise, which takes visitors right into the falls.
