Tibeto-BurmanTibeto-Burman is then divided into several branches, some of them geographic conveniences

    rather than linguistic proposals:Kamarupan (geographic)

Himalayish (geographic)Maha-Kiranti (includes Nepal Bhasa, Magar, Rai)

LoloBurmeseNaxiKarenicBaicTujia (unclassified)Matisoff makes no claim that the families in the Kamarupan or Himalayish branches have a

special relationship to one another other than a geographic one. They are intendedrather as categories of convenience pending more detailed comparative work.

Matisoff also notes that JingphoNungishLuish is central to the family in that in containsfeatures of many of the other branches, and is also located around the center of the

    Tibeto-Burman-speaking area.

    OLD MEITEILON - MEITHEI

Sohini Ray (Harvard University): Introduction toThe Grammar of the Meithei by Sobhana Chelliah.

Meithei is atypical of the Kamrupan group in

some significant ways. It lacks pronominal marking of the verb, which is

considered an original Tibeto-Burman trait; it alsolacks numerical classifiers [Richard Bauman1975; Scott DeLancey 1989b].

Unlike a Tibeto-Burman language it lacks tensemorphology.

Shobhana Chelliah, since her Ph D dissertation in Meithei(Meiteilon) in 1992at StStephens College in Delhi, was interestedin the endangered language Meithei, which is far from beingendangered now. She is now studying such an endangered

language called Lamkan in Manipur. She is a linguist professor at the Texas University at Denton,

Texas. She is currently Associate Editor of the journal HimalayanLinguistics of the Tibeto-Burman Area

Her book The Grammar of Meitheis is well receivedby thelinguistic fraternity but no by all. (price Rs 22,500)

She now agrees that Meitelon can not be classified as a Tibeto-Burman language until further research.

She is the only the top linguist of the world who has done a lot of

    fieldwork in Manipur.

Iwould be very happy to read your articles and I will do so.Work on the position of Manipuri as Tibeto-Burmanor another language should be done, I agree withyou on that. It would be a good PhD. Topic. Let melook further at your articles and write back.

Matisoffs preview of Chelliahs The Grammar of Meitheis

The Meithei language, far from being endangered, is widely usedas a lingua franca by other Tibeto-Burman people.

Meithei has been under heavy influence from Indo-Aryanlanguages, which manifest itself in its phonology, lexicon, and its

    grammar.
