Polesworth Matters Dear All

When I talk about the achievements of so many of our students I often make reference to them 'letting their light shine'. It is a quote from a poem read by Nelson Mandela at his inauguration as South African president The poem reads: “We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you NOT to be? You are a child of the world Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the qualities that are within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. As we let our own Light shine, we unconsciously Give others permission to do the same.”

The message is clear, when people achieve and do so publicly they feel good about themselves and encourage others to achieve. This is why celebrating and recognising achievements is a central part of our ethos at Polesworth. Since the start of this term the following students have been referred to me for doing something exceptional. They have genuinely let their lights shine and I am extremely proud of them.

When did you last update

your child’s information? We collect personal data on our students when they start school

in Year 7 but it is your responsibility to update these details on ‘My Child’ as they change

throughout the years e.g. change of address, mobile numbers, medical details etc..

For school trips, it is vitally important that your child’s medical and contact details are up to

date so the trip leader is fully aware of any requirements

such as allergies, asthma, dietary needs and so on.

Please email [email protected] if you

have problems updating your child’s details at any time.

Thank you for support with this.

We have once again been through a process of reviewing the curriculum offer for our Key Stage 4 students as the options process for Year 8 starts next week, leading to the curriculum information evening for Year 8 parents on the 13th February. This year reviewing the courses that we offer has been part of a larger piece of work, reviewing the curriculum which we offer to students across Years 7 to Year 13. By “curriculum” we mean all of the activities which have an effect on students’ learning, development and achievement as individuals. Therefore, we see the curriculum as including:

The formal programme of timetabled lessons;

All extra-curricular and out of school activities;

The way students and teachers treat each other;

The organisation, management and leadership of the school.

At the Polesworth School we believe that a well-structured and carefully planned, sequenced curriculum alongside high quality teaching is the foundation upon which our student’s achievement is built. Heads of Department and Subject Leaders, who are experts in their subjects, review their offer and carefully construct a curriculum that promotes a deep understanding of a wide range of topics which are clearly built upon prior learning within our school and the Key Stage 2 curriculum. Teachers plan learning that allows pupils to embed and recall knowledge through techniques such as interleaving of topics and spaced retrieval practice. This builds firm foundations for progression and achievement. It is through this that we believe that we meet our commitment to delivering a curriculum with the individual student at the centre and which meets our curricular aims; To deliver a curriculum with breadth, balance, coherence and progression for all students in order to:

Pass on the essential knowledge and skills needed to be well-rounded and well-educated individuals who are able to make a difference to the society in which they live

Create autonomous and ambitious learners as preparation for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life

Develop their potential through personal development, positive relationships and the development of individual talents

LGBT History Month (February 2020)

Poetry Competition!

This year the theme for LGBT History Month is “Poetry, Prose and Plays” so we are launching a poetry writing competition here at school.

Your entry does not need to be entirely based on the theme of LGBT but can include any or all aspects of things to do with equality, acceptance, love, identity, peace, pride, human rights, reconciliation, community, togetherness etc.

Your entry should be no longer than 1 side of A4 either typed or handwritten, and should be submitted to Mr Barber by the 14th February. You can enter more than one poem if you wish. There will be a prize for the winning poem and hopefully we may be able to create an anthology of poems from the competition. There will be a box to post your entries into in the Study Centre or you can hand them to Mr Barber in Tomlinson Hall.
