Comparative results with other European Countries (“European Social Survey”)

This survey is conducted by IDRA during August –September 2013 with the financial support of SACP Programme (“Swedish support to Ministry of Interior (MOI) / Albanian State Police (SP) for Community Policing”).

Majority of questions used in the research instrument are “standardized” with those used in “European Social Survey” (http://www.europeansocialsurvey.org) in many European countries in order to enable comparability of results with other European countries.

The questionnaire also included specific questions that were used in this survey only for Albania.

This presentation report contains results at national and regional level, but also by urban vs. rural, by gender and by wealth index (*), where relevant.

Furthermore, in a number of cases, there are presented comparison of results with those from “European Social Survey” (http://www.europeansocialsurvey.org) conducted in many European countries.

Result presented in this report are ‘weighted’ to correspond to national representativeness of population (AL).

‘Wealth index’ is explained in details in the following slide.

HOUSEHOLD PROFILE Wealth Index

What is wealth index

The wealth index is calculated using easy-to-collect data on a household’s ownership of selected assets, such as televisions, internet connection, car, and bicycles; expenditures.

Generated with a statistical procedure known as principal components analysis, the wealth index places individual households on a continuous scale of relative wealth. This method separates all interviewed households into five wealth quintiles to compare the influence of wealth on consumption, attitudes, etc. The wealth index is presented in the report as a background characteristic.

How it is calculated Wealth Index

Each household asset for which information is collected is assigned a weight or factor score generated through principal components analysis.

The resulting asset scores are standardized in relation to a standard normal distribution with a mean of zero and a standard deviation of one.

These standardized scores are then used to create the break points that define wealth quintiles as: Poorest, Poorer, Middle, Richer and Richest

Each household is assigned a standardized score for each asset, where the score differs depending on whether or not the household owned that asset. These scores are summed by household, and individuals are ranked according to the total score of the household in which they reside.
