April 1961, the U.S. government trains 1,300 Cuban exiles to invade Cuba to overthrow Fidel Castro and maintain an influence of U.S. government there.

They landed on the beach of Bahίa de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs) but Castro’s army stopped them and 90 exiles were killed, the rest taken as prisoners. This made Castro very suspicious of the U.S. which escalated in the Cuban Missile Crisis

In April of 1962, a nuclear war almost erupted. Khrushchev came to Castro and proposed he set up missile on Cuba.

Since the Bay of Pigs, Castro knew another attack from the U.S. would come so he approved it.

United States freaks out and Kennedy tells USSR that if Cuba bombs the U.S. then the U.S. will bomb the Soviet Union directly.

July 17 1972 five men were arrested trying to bug the democratic headquarters.

They were all linked to President Nixon’s campaigning

As a result, Nixon’s slush fund was discovered and all of Nixon’s recorded conversations.

This brought about the change where Nixon resigned and Gerald Ford was the first president to come about that was not elected.

The Watergate stimulated the following changes:

The government now kept an extremely close eye on the financial records of the President, everything has to be reported now.

The youth of the 70’s was now a extremely rebellious generation that had no trust in the government.

Chicago Democratic Convention 1968 Riots

In August 1968, Chicago held the Democratic Convention and Mayor Richard Daley was the host.

Since LBJ couldn’t run for another term, the convention was held to choose a new democratic nominee for president

Taft-Hartley Act(47)-declared closed shop illegal and permitted union shop vote from majority.

Civil Rights Act(57)-Civil Rights Commission was made to investigate discriminatory conditions and The Justice Department could obtain injunctions against the interference with the right to vote

Civil Rights Act(60)-Judges could hold hearings for people that were denied the right to vote

Civil Rights Act(64)-Kennedy pushed a new civil rights act which made racial discrimination in public places illegal. It also tried to keep the Deep South from making mandatory literacy tests etc.

Voting Rights Act(64)-removed the right of states to impose voting restrictions, LBJ

Anti-Poverty Act(65)-Approved by LBJ, gave $947.5 million for job training centers, loans for low-income farmers and students and education

Immigration Act(65)- Suggested by LBJ, it ended quotas based on national origin and immigration entrance were now decided by the occupation of the person or if he had relatives in US
