Mayor’s Community Benefit Fund Round 7 Successful Applicants Youth Learning To Drive Safely and Cold Room For Community Café

The Mayor’s Community Benefit Fund was established to assist local community organisations who have projects that can help our community in areas of need. Recently Round 7 of the Mayor’s Community Benefit Fund closed with fifteen (15) applications received totalling $120,935.50.

The two (2) successful applications in this round were from the Wesleyan Methodist Church Community Café and the Jason Rich Foundation.

The Wesleyan Methodist Church Community Café’s application was to help them to install a cold room to support their Grace Community Food Hamper program. The cold room will allow them to increase the type and amount of fresh/perishable foods they can keep on hand (40 meals per week and over 200 hampers per week).

The Jason Rich Foundation will be offering forty-eight (48) Year 12 South Burnett students the opportunity to complete a Defensive Driving Course to teach them the skills to stay safe on our roads.

“The cold room for the food hamper program will provide much needed support for those who are in need and the defensive driving course will provide students with potentially lifesaving skills. I am pleased to see that the Mayor’s Community Benefit Fund continues to support so many worthwhile projects within our region.” said Mayor Wayne Kratzmann.

Mayor’s Community Benefit Fund Committee Member Rod Morgan, Wesleyan Methodist Church Pastor Nuku Piukala, members of the church’s Local Advisory Committee (LAC) and volunteers of the Grace Community Food Hamper program, Mrs Deslee Eggins, Mr Frank Lockrey and Mayor Wayne Kratzmann.

February breakfast meeting of the Murgon Business & Development Assoc Inc. held at Reflections.

FEDERAL ASSISTANCE PAYMENTS FOR WIDE BAY COUNCILS Local Governments in Wide Bay will receive a total $3,867,129 this quarter, under the most recent installment

of the Federal Government Financial Assistance Grants (FAG) programme. Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said it would be the third installment of

Financial Assistance Grants funding paid to local councils this year. “Without the Financial Assistance Grants programme, Wide Bay residents could be paying higher council rates

for the same or lower levels of service,” Mr Truss said. “The FAGs programme differs to most Federal Government funding, as it is paid unconditionally to local

councils, allowing them to spend according to their own priorities. “One of the great advantages of this funding is that it delivers a boost to local councils, so that they can get on

with the job of building vital local infrastructure, supporting local businesses and creating jobs in our community. “These funds will be allocated by councils towards a variety of needs within local communities, such as roads,

libraries, infrastructure as well as services like the upkeep of local parks and public spaces, animal control and waste collection and disposal.”

“This arrangement is one of the Federal Government’s ways of acknowledging the special and important role that local governments play in meeting the needs of our local communities.”

How is it all put together? Firstly all your stories and photographs are put together here in Murgon, usually about 70 A4 pages, over many late nights, they are then e-mailed to Linda Urch at Affordable Type who sets the magazine and sends it back by e-mail for proof reading and 15 minutes later it is sent to the printer who prints that evening and delivers to Murgon next morning and Mick Kemp and Darryl & Lynn Koy deliver it locally. Half of our quantity is also posted and delivered by mail service contractors. Volunteers also place a copy on our web site to be seen worldwide. This is now our 115th issue of the monthly magazine, the Murgon Moments, I hope you have enjoyed it.

Proston State School Leadership Investure

NRL VISIT Murgon State school was privileged to have a visit from two NRL ambassadors,

Petero Civoniceva and Lucy Hooper. Petero is one of the most respected men in Rugby League, after a massive 309 NRL games he is now a Community Engagement Officer for the NRL program ‘One Community’.

All students and staff were excited to have time to listen to Petero’s stories from his football days. Petero and Lucy spoke to them about the importance of eating well, drinking lots of water, and exercising. They also told the students to remember there is always someone they can talk to when they are feeling sad. Either their family members, friends, teachers, coaches or team mates.

After speaking to the students they all had lots of fun and laughs playing ball games, and Trivia and Celebrity Head. Story courtesy of Murgon State School newsletter.

St Vincent de Paul The Murgon conference of St Vincent de Paul has recently been in the process of becoming active again after almost

15years of non activity. Consequently, Kevin Fry approached the Men’s Shed in Murgon to make some poor boxes for the churches in Proston, Wondai, Murgon and Goomeri to collect funds for our works in the local area.

Mr Keith Hatchett responded with enormous skill and craftsmanship to manufacture these beautiful boxes for this purpose. Kevin Fry presented Father Michael Carroll the boxes which were distributed to the churches. Mrs Kathy Julian has designed some stickers for the boxes and when these are attached with the St Vincent de Paul logos they will be permanently placed within the churches.

The members of the group are extremely grateful for the wonderful contribution the Men’s Shed have made towards the work of St Vincent de Paul. We are negotiating with local community groups especially Graham House to see where we can best serve the needy in Murgon and surrounds.

Anyone interested in being part of our work is invited to join us at the Catholic parish centre for our next meeting at 10am on Tuesday 19th April. For further information call Cecily Fry on 41689202 or Fr Michael Carroll on 416871406.

The water level in the lake was at 62% which together with the good weather conditions set the scene for a great weekend of camping, fishing and family activities.

Profits from the event are used to supplement fishing permit funds from the Queensland Government and to date approximately 4.5 million fingerlings have been stocked into Lake Boondooma.

The Catch and Release category of longest Native targeting Australian Bass and Yellowbelly was won by Mark Bleys of Proston with a Bass measuring in at 515mm and taking home over $300 cash prizes and trophy.

Capricorn Coast Landcare Group says THANKYOU It’s been a massive year for the

volunteer-led community group, and they’re celebrating with community cheer!

The award-winning Group admit 2015 has presented its fair share of challenges, but point out unswerving community spirit has carried them through. It’s community spirit that achieves great things “We rely heavily on volunteers and members to get things done, and when things get busy and tough, it’s easy to get caught up in

just getting through it all,” says long-time President Alby Wooler. Most recently Alby shared time and swapped stories with a group of young Aboriginal men from Barambah-Clontarf Academy on their End-of-Year Senior’s trip. The Group stopped in to help haul 7 shopping trolleys and 5 large bags of rubbish out of the Group’s Figtree Creek rehabilitation site opposite Yeppoon Central. While the group was “trolley fishing”, Alby was able to share the story of Figtree Creek as well as local bush-tucker knowledge.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to share and I’m so grateful to these young men from Murgon way. They gave up some of their hard-earnt holiday to help a community they don’t live in. That’s the kind of community spirit I’m celebrating - let’s share, give thanks for and create more of that for 2016.”

A Pioneers DinnerGolden Anniversary 1963

Celebrations are so often connected with tangible objects such as buildings; however the foundations are so much deeper. Such is the case for Proston Baptist congregation as they celebrate the centenary of the opening of their church building, originally at Speedwell, in April 1916.

In October 1910 a group of settlers arrived in Wondai from England, recruited for the task of clearing and developing farmland at Speedwell.

It would seem that these new settlers brought with them a pioneering spirit, since most did not come from a rural background. A very real faith in Jesus Christ strongly guided their lives, a number having strong links to Baptist and Methodist (Uniting) backgrounds .

From the foundation of ‘Oswestry Grange Settlement’, (records showing the 50th anniversary of Speedwell congregation in 1963) gatherings for Sunday School and Sunday Worship were an integral part of their lives. Sheds and homes became the first meeting places with other buildings being used later as available.

The need for a designated place of worship and ministry was recognised and in 1914 Mr W.H. Perkins donated one acre of land for the purpose. Lots more hard work, volunteer labor, support and material from Wondai, and a very austere 20’x20’ building was opened, debt free on Sunday April 16th 1916 with a gathering of over 80 attending.

Services were conducted regularly by Baptist and Methodist ministers, while also being available for use by other protestant denominations.

The first wedding at Speedwell was of Mr Aubrey Potter and Miss Ada Slinger. The first wedding in the church was of Mr Wylie H Coulsen and Miss Laurie Perkins who set up house on their property; ‘Mt Pleasant’ at Leafdale.

As the area developed and the township of Proston came into being more places of worship were established. In the 1930s the Methodist congregation relocated into the new township of Proston. They were first congregation to do so.

Around the same time the Baptists were given land and built at Durong. Several other shared preaching outstations were established covering a wide area surrounding Proston.

Christian Endeavour groups provided for the spiritual needs of the youth. Sunday Schools were held at several centres. Mr & Mrs Mollenhauer conducted a Sunday school in Hivesville for many years and also at Boondooma dam during the three years of its construction. More recently the church hasted a visit by JC Epidemic in Proston Showgrounds

Proston township, roads and transport improve, properties have become established and so in 1967 after 51 years of service at Speedwell the Church building was relocated to its present site in Blake St Proston where it has continued to be the base of ministry until the present, along with the old Merlwood school building which was purchased and moved in the following year.

The pioneering spirit has never left; members of the congregation are still active in the life, events and ministry within the wider community. There has always been a heart to give sacrificially in time and resources, to work shoulder to shoulder in maintain the property, thankful for outside assistance such as the recent makeover and paint job with the Mobile Mission team photographed above.

God has been good to us over the last century, and we want to celebrate what HE has done.Do you have connections with these pioneering families? Have you been part of the church and its ministry?

Has the church family touched your life in some way? Join with us for the Pioneers dinner, cooked in camp ovens on Saturday 16th April. Join us on Sunday 17th at the Church in Blake St Proston for a time of worship to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ as we give thanks for the century past and look to Him for the years ahead .

ST JOSEPH’S PARISH LAUNCH CARITAS APPEALOn the evening of Friday 5 February,

St Joseph’s Catholic Church hosted a dinner to launch their annual Caritas Appeal. This year’s appeal promotes the theme: “Learning More, Creating Change”. Special guest Joseph Foley, the Diocesan Director of Caritas, spoke to a gathering of almost fifty people about the importance of providing clean water to communities around the world.

In addition to avoiding consumption of disease-ridden water, building or restoring a well at a cost of $1600 ensures that a community benefits from improved nutrition through agricultural farming and allows children to receive an

education. Without a functioning well, children are often required to walk up to two or three hours to locate water, then carry that water home. With adequate provision of clean water, the hours spent on the road can instead be used as classroom time. By providing clean water, Caritas creates a substantial change: improving the health, lifestyle, and level of education of an entire community –and this is only one of Caritas Australia’s many outreach programmes. In 2015, the St Joseph’s Parish raised a total of $2100: this being more than enough to fully fund this life saving change for one African community due to the reality that Caritas only retain 10% of donations for administrative purposes, instead relying on the generosity of the universal church.

After Joseph spoke, those gathered had the opportunity to listen to fellow-parishioners Neil and Fran Hutton. Neil and Fran have worked extensively overseas with Lay Missionaries and were able to speak of their personal experiences working with people suffering in third world countries. Neil first shared some insight into the Nepalese, drawing on many images of workers and children that he worked with in Nepal. Fran spoke too, ensuring that everyone gathered for the meal could locate Kiribati and appreciate the effects rising ocean levels have on island-nations –not only resuming land, but also contaminating clean water sources.

Joseph, Neil, and Fran all touched on the difference between the comfortable life often taken for granted in Australia, and the lives of those living in poverty –and how little it would take to create change if everybody contributes to the cause.

The evening was widely considered a success and the Parish hopes to be able to make this an annual event through which we can invite all members of the community to celebrate the good work achieved by our small sacrifices.

Donations toward the annual Caritas Australia appeal are especially welcome in the lead up to Easter each year.

INAUGURAL CAMERON SMITH SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT LOUIS DOBBELAAR

Queensland golfer Cameron Smith has confirmed he will be giving back to golf through a separate scholarship in his name, which will also be part of Golf Australia’s Give Back program.

The 22-year-old, who tied for fourth at last year’s US Open, will give an annual $12,500 sponsorship to a player he and Golf Australia’s high performance team jointly select.

Golf Queensland chair Peter Castrisos said it was a testament to Smith’s commitment to grow the talent of young golfers in this country.

“Cameron Smith transitioned through our junior program to the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) program so it is humbling to hear he hasn’t forgotten the importance of giving back,” Mr Castrisos said.

The inaugural Cameron Smith Scholarship has been given to Golf Australia national squad junior member and fellow Queenslander Louis Dobbelaar.

“I am honoured to receive the Cameron Smith Scholarship for 2016,” said Dobbelaar, who is also a QAS member.

“It is awesome to see a golfer who has gone through the process here in Queensland as a junior, through to a top amateur and now on the PGA Tour give back to young golfers in Australia.

“Cameron is a player I admire and respect hugely for what he has achieved already in his career and someone I have looked up to since I started playing golf.

“It means a lot to me to receive the inaugural scholarship, and this will really help me achieve my goals for 2016.”

Face book for the senior generation For those of my generation who do not and cannot comprehend why Facebook exists: I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passersby what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later, and with whom. I give them pictures of my family, my dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations, give them the “thumbs up” and tell them I like them. And it works just like Facebook. I already have four people following me: two police officers, a private investigator, and a psychiatrist.

MR PERCY ISZLAUB’S 90TH BIRTHDAY PARTY - WONDAIFormer Wondai Shire Councillor and Mayor Mr Percy Iszlaub AM celebrated his 90th birthday on February 3rd - and

Saturday afternoon (6th Feb) he held a public birthday party at the Wondai Diggers Club in Mackenzie Street. Percy and fellow members of the Wondai Town & District Band, along with members of Nambour’s award-winning Sunshine Brass & Nambour Band, performed a concert. Testimonials were delivered from South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann and local sports guru Russell “Skippy” Exelby.

Years of life in local government serving the people of Wondai Shire and his involvement in many sportingorganizations particularly tennis, football and fishing plus the 74 extraordinary number of years in the Wondai Town

Band, 30 as President and now as Patron have been a major part of his life and these organizations are indebted by his participation.

In his younger years Mr Izlaub played rugby league football for Wondai and South Burnett and also Wide Bay against the touring Great Britain side, was selected for Queensland as a leg spinner in cricket, spent 15 years on the South Burnett hospital board, was secretary of the Wondai Football Club for 13 years, was a pioneer in the rural products and seeds, was a great inspiration to younger people and loved being part of Boondooma Dam Fishing Club. In Federal politics Mr Islaub ran for preselection for Wide Bay against Warren Truss who ultimately went onto be Deputy Prime Minister of Australia.

Surrounded by family, relatives and friends Mr Iszlaub and daughter Jane were part of the Wondai Town Band that helped deliver the fine concert of great music.

Kathy’s CommentsSincere Thanks for your Support during the sad loss of Cr Jamie Mackenzie.

It has been a tough time for me with the passing of Jamie Mackenzie on the 9th of February. He accompanied me to many functions, proud to wear his Council badge and always with a hint of pink to match my outfit and to display a proud partnership that we had formed. He was a true gentleman and I had the most amazing special times with him. I will treasure the memories of the wonderful times I shared with him and will now try to do my best in my role into the future.Jamie was a Town Planner as well as being a Councillor and he also looked after his Father until he passed away in April of last year. The Mackenzies have had the property “Gravel Creek” at Killarney since the late 1800’s and it was Jamie’s dream to own the property and continue on with the proud family tradition. He

was a well-respected Councillor from the Southern Downs Regional Council and their community is also deeply shocked. Jamie was on the Local Government Policy Committee with me and we had a lot of input into positive changes working with firstly Minister Crisfulli and lately with Fiona Simpson MP. I spent the second last week-end with him at Stanthorpe Show where I have never seen him happier and he spent the last week-end at our property ‘Di Di’ where he helped with the mustering which he loved to do. Jamie was shattered by a media release that came out early in that week. I don’t know enough about rural suicide that I will ever understand why all this has happened. I think that it is something that we need to address urgently in all our communities as it is happening at an alarming rate and particularly with rural men. I would like to sincerely thank everyone for your unbelievable support. Thank you for the phone calls, prayers, flowers, personal visits, emails, texts, facebook messages and sympathy cards from across Qld and beyond. I really appreciate your prayers and messages that will help me treasure the memories, keep my strong Christian faith and face the future with energy and commitment.Editors footnote; On behalf of the Murgon Business & Development Assoc Inc please accept our sincere condolences to both you, Kathy and family, and Jamie’s other family members, relatives and close friends. Jamie who came to be part of our community will be sadly missed by many.Leo’s special message; Please just give Kathy a hug and don’t ever say I know what you are going through unless you have experienced it yourself. It is a terrible different sickness and tragedy and something that people don’t realize that they have not got the right to unwillingly hurt loved ones left behind, every minute of the hour, every hour of the day, every day of the week, every week of the month, every month of the year and every year for the rest of their lives. You continually ask Why? And why couldn’t I have done something. Some people can handle disasters and major setbacks, others fear what people will think and can’t and need to seek professional help urgently before it is too late. Help is available 24 hours a Day 1300224636, Please look out for each other. Thanks to Division 5 voters for my re-election.I am honoured and humbled to be re-elected unopposed. I would like to sincerely thank everyone for supporting me in my work in the new amalgamated Council for the last 8 years. I think that it has been tough for everyone but we have achieved a lot in Division 5. Some of the highlights of the last 8 years for me have been to maintain an Office in Murgon and have it fully staffed. I have had numerous bridges renewed but the highlight has been to finally get Campbell’s bridge the go ahead to support our farmers. I was pleased to also have Bill Robert’s honoured with the Bridge in Lamb St. The reopening of Yallakool Park on BP Dam has been another success story. The 48 hour camping seems to be working well and the skate park has been well received by the young people of Murgon. I was also pleased that we have been able to upgrade the pool and the PCYC has been a good news story for the area. There have also been lots of upgrades in Proston including the cemetery, the railway Park and the new CBD footpath. I fought hard to retain all of the rural tips and we have achieved that and because of legislation they have been made into Transfer Stations. The sealing of Johnson St in Hivesville has been important to me as it went back to gravel after amalgamation and I wanted it reinstated. The upgrades to both our Dams with new Cabins and various improvements have helped to attract more tourism to the area. I have and will continue to be a strong advocate for rural people. I have worked hard to support the spraying of lantana and other weeds and to get more graders out and about on our rural roads. I have supported strongly the 1080 baiting and the trapping projects that have helped with the continual wild dog issues.Success with funding for Murgon & HivesvilleIt has been a lucky time for us with funding and thanks to BIEDO for helping with this success. We have achieved an amenities block for Hivesville and $33,000 to go towards water improvements for Murgon Sports Association.Contact Details and Meeting OpportunitiesAs always I am working on following up jobs and concerns that have been brought to my attention. Please contact me if you have an issue or wish to make an appointment to meet at your place or at the Murgon Council Office.Cr Kathy Duff (Division 5) South Burnett Regional CouncilPhone 07 41680225 or 0437020705 or email [email protected]

BARAMBAH GARDEN CLUB NEWS

We travelled to Inverlaw for our February meeting to visit the Bunya Red Caper Farm. Even for those who were not really that interested in capers found that they enjoyed our visit immensely.

After our meeting we had a close look at the plants. I’m glad that it is not me who has to pick them. Allan told us about the care and harvesting of both the capers and the caper berries. Capers are the unopen flower bud. As you can see by the photo they grow along the stem of the plant.

We also had a close look at the alpacas on the property before enjoying lunch. Naturally we also tasted the capers and the caper berries.

For our next meeting we will be learning about orchids. For more information please phone 41686238. Until next time Happy Gardening

THIS IS DEFINITELY A MUST TO READ Let us say it’s 7.25pm and you are going home (alone

of course) after an unusually hard day on the job. You’re really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your

chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about 5km from the hospital nearest your home.

Unfortunately, you don’t know if you’ll be able to make it that far.

You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

How to survive a heart attack when alone – 1. Since many people are alone when they suffer

a heart attack without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

2. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously, A deep breath should be taken before each cough and the cough must be deep and prolonged as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

3. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it to regain a normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get help or to a hospital!

4. Tell as many people as possible about this. It could save their lives.

ENJOY HIGH TEA AT QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENT HOUSEI realise it is a long way to travel for morning tea. However, should you be in Brisbane on any of the dates listed

below you may wish to experience the delights of a High Tea at Parliament House. High Teas are held each month from 10.30am to midday.

Two kinds of High Tea are offered - Traditional High Tea and Special High Tea. At each you will be served a selection of delicacies prepared by the Parliament’s resident chefs while taking in the beauty of Queensland’s premier heritage building.

Reservations are essential and can be made by phoning Parliament House Catering on 3553 6377 or via email at [email protected].

I would certainly recommend also taking an optional special guided tour of Parliament House. Visitors always enjoy this tour and find it quite informative.
