SEPARATORSPollution prevention is a critical part of sustainable drainage systems and verified oil separators are designed to prevent watercourse pollution by containing oil and otherhydrocarbons that have entered a drainage system.

The latest range of Conder oil separators fully conform to the both the EnvironmentAgency’s latest PPG3 guidelines and European standard BSEN-858-1-2 and are provento effectively separate oil and water. Under test the Conder Bypass Separator performto less than 1 parts per million and, therefore, protect the environment and public safety.

Class 1 and Class 2 Separators:

Class 1 separators are designed to achieve a concentration of less than 5mg/l of oilunder standard test conditions and should be used when the separator is required toremove very small oil droplets, such as those arising from car park run-off.

Class 2 separators are designed to achieve a concentration of less than 100mg/l oilunder standard test conditions and are suitable for dealing with discharges where alower quality requirement applies (e.g. where the effluent passes to a foul sewer) andfor trapping spillages.

Both classes can be produced as ‘full retention’ or ‘by-pass’ separators.

SIZING FORMULA

In line with PPG3 and recommended testing procedures, the Conder separators shownhave been allocated a ‘Nominal Size’. Use the tables to make your selection. Nominalsize is expressed as CNS for Full Retention Separators and CNSB for BypassSeparators.

The nominal size (NS) of a full retention separator that is required for a catchment area(A) is obtained from the following formula: NS = 0.018 A (m2)

For a bypass separator the formula is: NSB = 0.0018 A (m2)

In addition, capacity for silt storage (C) must be provided, either as an integral part ofthe separator or as a separate upstream unit, according to the following formula (litres)= NS x 100.

Silt capacity for a bypass separator must be provided either upstream of the separatorin the bypass weir chamber and not in the main separating chamber.

CNSB BYPASS SEPARATORSConder’s new range of CNSB Bypass Separators continues to provide the UK’sBuilding, Civils and Construction markets with the most innovative, high performance and value-engineered product possible.

Bypass separators fully treat all flows generated by rainfall rates of up to 5mm/hr.These separators are used when it is considered an acceptable risk not to provide fulltreatment for high flows, for example where the risk of a large spillage and heavy rainfall occurring at the same time is small.

Units are supplied with a standard (minimum) invert depth. Extension shafts, site fitted,are available in standard 1.0m lengths. The depth from finished ground level to the topcrown of the main shell should be no more than 2 metres; this may vary dependingupon ground water conditions. CNS FULL RETENTION SEPARATORSConders full retention separators are designed for use in high-risk spillage areas suchas vehicle workshops, Fuel distribution depots and Scrap yards. Each separatorincludes the necessary requirements for oil & silt storage, coalescer and automatic closure device to retain excess stored oil and to avoid contamination of the water discharged. Units are Available in Class 1 or Class 2.

Full retention separators treat the full flow that can be delivered by the drainage system, which is normally equivalent to the flow generated by a rainfall intensity of 65mm/hr. On large sites, some short term flooding may be an acceptable means of limiting the flow rate and hence the size of full retention systems.

FORECOURT SEPARATORSFORECOURT SEPARATORSForecourt separators are full retention separators specified to retain on site the maximum spillage likely to occur on a petrol filling station. They are required for bothsafety and environmental reasons and will treat spillages occurring during the vehiclerefuelling and road tanker delivery. The size of the separator is increased in order toretain the possible loss of the contents of one compartment of a road tanker, whichmay be up to 7,600 litres

Full retention forecourt separators have been developed to comply with the EuropeanEN 858 specifically to retain a spillage from a 7600-litre road tanker compartment.Designed for installation in petrol forecourts and similar high risk refuelling areas, theseparator will intercept hydrocarbon pollutants and gross spillage and prevent theirentry into the drainage system.

WASH DOWN SEPARATORSEH Smith offer a wide range of one, two and three chamber separators specifically tobe installed into wash down areas such as car wash & heavy goods vehicle cleaning facilities that must be directly discharged into a foul drain, which will then receive secondary municipal treatment. Discharge to a surface water drainage system is notallowed. Silt separators can be used as an additional item.
