ECOSPECIFIER LIFE-CYCLE ASSESSMENT
INTEGRATED DESIGN AND POLICY ISSUES
Product is designed to replace f ibre-based, wool-based, blanket and vapour barr ier in one applicat ion. Product performs as a thermal insulat ion, vapour barr ier and can be used as a thermal break.
Thermal performance is to a large extent dependent on minimum air space dimensions (preferably over 20mm) adjacent to the outer surfaces and instal lat ion context. Ref lect ive and hybr id insulat ion values should be quoted in the context of the bui lding element as i t is not the mater ial i tsel f which provides the thermal resistance but the impact of the low emittance surface that reduces heat f lows across an air space.
I t is important that penetrat ions through the foi l (e.g. plumbing pipes or electr ical cables) are taped and that the joins in the foi l are taped. I f air can leak from one air space to the next, the heat f low by convect ion ‘short c ircuits ’ the reduced radiant heat f low caused by the ref lect ive foi l , substant ial ly reducing i ts ef fect.
Reducing heat ing and cooling loads of bui ldings contr ibutes to reduct ions in energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions, through reduced need for air condit ioning, and hence reduced plant s ize and operat ing costs. Reduced re-radiat ion from surfaces exposed to direct sun wi l l also support staff comfort and increase product iv i ty.
HUMAN HEALTH
Health
Products are manufactured with the benign polymer polyethylene without the use of formaldehyde (as some f ibreglass and rockwool products are). As such, the products are able to provide energy eff ic iency without creat ing human health r isks associated with airborne f ibres or VOC emissions.
Ant i corrosion, or, antiglare coat ings contain a very smal l percentage (1/1000 of a gram per m2) of solvent which in i ts raw form pr ior to manufacture is hazardous. However, af ter the ink is appl ied the product passes through a laminat ion process at approximately 250°C which disperses the solvent, therefore there is no further odour or off-gassing once manufactured.
OH&S safety precautions should be taken during manufacture process to el iminate workplace r isk.
Comfort
R-Values indicate that this system wi l l reduce solar heat gain, part icular ly radiantgain, whi le also providing conduct ional resistance through the mult i- layer polymer closed air cel l structure. The thermal benef i ts achieved by these products result in a reduct ion in radiated heat transfer and in the demand for air condit ioning and heat ing. This wi l l potent ial ly lead to improved individual thermal comfort levels, promoting a healthy indoor environment.
Indoor Environment Quality
Finished products do not emit VOCs, improving indoor air quality.

ECOLOGICAL QUALITY
Terrestrial
Emissions – The production of alumina from bauxite ores uses a chemical treatment, known as the Bayer Process (see Glossary). The alkaline mist associated with this process may have adverse land and vegetation impacts.
Polyester is principally derived from petroleum based polymers. Petroleum extraction and distribution can contribute to oil spills.
Physical – Mineral extraction of bauxite used to make aluminium will disrupt landscapes and alter ecosystems. Because bauxite deposits are found near the Earth's surface, mining requires removal of topsoil and overburden before deeper excavation occurs.
Petrochemical extraction can cause localised terrestrial disturbance around oil fields, via mining infrastructure, creation of access roads, and subsidence.
Aquatic
Emissions – The extraction and production of aluminium products have associated emissions to aquatic environments that have localised impacts around production facilit ies.
Petroleum extraction and distribution can contribute to oil spills.
Physical – Bauxite residues of red mud are often disposed of in tailing dams where the mud is allowed to settle. The excess water is discharged into marine environments.
Petrochemical extraction can cause localised aquatic disturbance around oil fields via mining infrastructure and dredging of the seabed.
Atmosphere
Greenhouse (GHG) – The process of manufacturing aluminium has very high energy requirements and subsequent GHG levels, particularly aluminium.
This product util ises polyester, which is fabricated from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels generate both atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gases on combustion.

Operational eff iciency – Products do not require energy during operat ion. Applying insulat ion reduces energy consumption of the bui lding.
Re-use Eff iciency – Subject to appropriate instal lat ion and removal techniques, these products represents a high value product with high re-use potent ial .
Toxics and Pollutants – Polyethylene is highly stable and does not readi ly react with other elements or compounds in the environment. Neither LDPE nor aluminum is sources of toxics or pol lutants in use, but both create minor local ized emissions around product ion faci l i t ies.
Ozone Depletion – There is no ODP in production, installation or on-going use.
Urban Heat Island Effects – PolyShield products are always covered by roof/wal l c ladding so i ts highly ref lect ive surface is never exposed and hence creates no UHI benef i ts.

Noise – PolyShield Products wi l l provide certain acoust ic insulat ion, reducing noise levels.
Biodiversity
Bauxite mining leads to modif ied soi l prof i les, topography and drainage which impacts natural vegetat ion and biodiversi ty. The oi l extract ion process results in the release of toxic dr i l l ing by-products into local r ivers, whi le broken pipel ines and leakage result in persistent oi l spi l lage.
Product contains polyester which generates biodiversity impacts through the atmospheric emissions generated during the extract ing and manufactur ing processes. These have not been quanti f ied in terms of impacts on biological systems, except in the case of oi l -spi l l impacts which, whi le rare, can have signif icant long-term, local ised impacts.
RESOURCE DEPLETION
Resource Efficiency
Aluminium is the third most abundant metal on Earth and the most abundant in the Earth's crust. The primary mineral source for aluminium is bauxite ore, a non-renewable resource with an estimated supply of 180 years based on current Reserve Life Index (RLI) (Source: Meyer, 2004, Availability of bauxite reserves, Journal of Natural Resources Research, p. 161).
Polyester is derived from fossil fuel based feedstock and is a non-renewable resource.
