Sacraments
Baptisms Baptisms for infants through 2nd grade are generally held during any of the weekend Masses (except during Advent and Lent.)
Please note: you must complete an online baptism request form located on our website before attending the baptism classes. If you are registered with another parish, you must provide a letter from your parish confirming that you are registered there and are regularly attending Mass.
There are three classes which parents and godparents are required to attend. The first covers the responsibilities parents and godparents promise toward keeping the flame of faith alive in their child/godchild. The second will reaffirm and respond to questions from the first and discuss the ongoing involvement in the child’s continued growth in the faith of the Church through the Sacrament of Confirmation. And the third class will discuss the baptismal rite itself.
Classes will be scheduled and conducted by Deacon Richard Ramm upon receipt of the completed baptism request form.

All weddings must be scheduled six months in advance. A marriage preparatory class (four sessions) is required. Contact the parish office to determine availability and to schedule your wedding.

The youth of the parish are busy with a number of events
over the next month leading up to Christmas. Check out all
the events coming up:
Nov. 20 The youth will begin handing out hot chocolate and
cookies after the 5:00 pm Mass.
Dec. 04 Family movie night after the 5:00 pm Mass. The
movie will be “Elf”.
Dec. 16 The youth will be throwing a Christmas party for
the youth.

help students in our K-8 grades who need
remediation.
In our efforts to allow access to a Catholic
education for as many people who would desire it,

who are behind our grade levels and need
remediation beyond classroom differentiation.
These are motivated students and families who

THE LORD WILL COME This is the direct translation from the original Aramaic.
I f you notice our banner in the front of the church, it has the original Aramaic text as well
the English word. This Aramaic or Syriac expression was used by St. Paul at the conclusion of his
first Epistle to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 16:22 ) signifying "Our Lord Cometh."
I have a special place in my heart for this phrase as it is written in my native tongue. The Assyrians speak
the modern version of Aramaic today. The language you see on our banner is the language that Jesus spoke
which gives it even greater meaning.
As we know, in ancient cities of Iraq and other places of the Middle
East, our brothers and sisters in Christ have been through turmoil
and devastation that is unimaginable. I am so grateful that my par-
ents left the region when they did but I always feel a sense of help-
lessness and sadness for those who have had to endure so much. As I
sit at mass I often think about those who cannot sit and freely partici-
pate in the Eucharistic Celebration before us.
In one of the oldest churches there, they were unable to celebrate mass a couple of years ago for the first
time in hundreds of years. A few weeks ago they were able to celebrate mass for the first time again in al-
most two years since they were displaced. As I watched the digital footage of the mass taking place amidst
the rubble and destruction inside the church I was reminded that the Lord is bigger than our surroundings.
I am happy that in the midst of all of the sadness and devastation they have finally taken back our oldest
and ancient churches in time to celebrate the Mass of our Dear Savior's Birth.
May this Advent Season be a time of reflection, preparation, anticipation and joy; a time when we can truly
embrace the Lord in the most amazing way, a time when we can be hopeful and joyful for the coming of
the Lord - !

Paulist Father John Hurley was ordained a priest in 1977. He is a leader in evangelization for over 35 years founding the Paulist Center for Catholic Evangelization in Portland, OR in 1979. In 1997, his leadership went national serving as Executive Director for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat for Evangelization where he was responsible for implementing Go and Make Disciples, A National Plan and Strategy for Catholic Evangelization in the United States. He later served as Executive Director for the National Pastoral Life Center in New York City and the Department of Evangelization for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. He has spoken in over 100 dioceses across the United States and continues to do so before parish, diocesan and national Church leadership. Since 2014, he serves as a consultant for NewEvangelizationStrategies.org and resides at Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco where he once served as pastor. Pope Francis appointed Fr. Hurley a Missionary of Mercy for the Great Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Instruction of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
“Ad resurgendum cum Christo”
On October 25, 2016, the Vatican provided instructions that clarify the Catholic practice of the burial of the
deceased and the conservation of the ashes in cases of cremation. These instructions were sent to all funeral
directors along with all the clergy in the diocese. The full text of the Instruction can be found at

Summarizing the instruction, for Catholics the ideal is for the body to be at the Funeral Mass of the
Resurrection that takes place in the church, after which burial occurs in a cemetery. The Catholic Church
does permit cremation. The ideal is that the body is present for the funeral liturgy and afterwards the body is
cremated. However, the deceased may be cremated prior to the Funeral Mass and the cremains be present
for the Funeral Mass. The cremains are to be either buried or placed in a sacred place.
What must not occur is that the cremains be divided and distributed to various people, or used to create
jewelry, or the ashes to be scattered “in the air, on land, at sea, or in some other way.” The cremains are also
to not be kept within the home. The following are selected portions of the Instruction which may help to
explain the Church’s position:
§3. Following the most ancient Christian tradition, the Church insistently recommends that the bodies of the
deceased be buried in cemeteries or other sacred places. In memory of the death, burial, and resurrection of
the Lord, the mystery that illumines the Christian meaning of death, burial is above all the most fitting way
to express faith and hope in the resurrection of the body.
By burying the bodies of the faithful, the Church confirms her faith in the resurrection of the body, and
intends to show the great dignity of the human body as an integral part of the human person whose body
forms part of their identity. She cannot, therefore, condone attitudes or permit rites that involve erroneous
ideas about death, such as considering death as the definitive annihilation of the person, or the moment of
fusion with Mother Nature or the universe, or as a stage in the cycle of regeneration, or as the definitive
liberation from the “prison” of the body.
§5. When, for legitimate motives, cremation of the body has been chosen, the ashes of the faithful must be
laid to rest in a sacred place, that is, in a cemetery or, in certain cases, in a church or an area, which has been
set aside for this purpose, and so dedicated by the competent ecclesial authority.
The reservation of the ashes of the departed in a sacred place ensures that they are not excluded from the
prayers and remembrance of their family or the Christian community. It prevents the faithful departed from
being forgotten, or their remains from being shown a lack of respect, which eventuality is possible, most
especially once the immediately subsequent generation has too passed away. Also it prevents any unfitting
or superstitious practices.
§6. For the reasons above, the conservation of the ashes of the departed in a domestic residence is not
permitted….Nonetheless, the ashes may not be divided among various family members and due respect
must be maintained regarding the circumstances of such a conservation.
§7. In order that every appearance of pantheism, naturalism or nihilism be avoided, it is not permitted to
scatter the ashes of the faithful departed in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way, nor may they be
preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry or other objects.
§8. When the deceased notoriously has requested cremation and the scattering of their ashes for reasons
contrary to the Christian faith, a Christian funeral must be denied to that person according to the norms of
the law.

The Respect Life Commission of the Diocese of
Reno is co-sponsoring two presentations at the
annual Diocesan Conference.
Fr. Tadeusz Pacholczyk, Ph.D. and Director of
Education and Ethicist for the National Catho-

Assisted Suicide, Euthanasia, Pain Manage-

The online form must be filled out before attending the Baptism classes. The classes will be broken
into three monthly classes. You will need to provide a letter at the first class from your parish
where you are registered and attending Mass on a regular basis.
The first class will discuss the reason why parents and godparents have responsibilities for the
growth of the child in the church. The second class will begin by answering of any questions from
the previous month, followed by parent involvement in the child's growth through Confirmation.
The third class will discuss the actual baptism.
Please go online to our website to fill out a baptism request form. There will be a $10.00 charge
for class materials at the time of the class. These preparatory classes are required for both parents
and godparents.
Please make sure you have filled out the on line form before the class since that will be your sign in for the class.

Centering Prayer An Introduction to Contemplative Practice
St. Albert’s Centering Prayer group, led by JoAnn and Chuck Baird, is on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the chapel.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CC), § 2653, says:
The Church ‘forcefully and specially exhorts all the Christian faithful…to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ’ (Phil 3:8) by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures…Let them remem-ber, however, that prayer should accompany the reading of Sacred Scripture, so that a dialogue takes place between God and man. For ‘we speak to him when we pray; we listen to him when we read the divine oracles.’
Centering Prayer is a spiritual custom based upon the Word of God, Lectio Divina. We strive to in-crease the time we spend alone with God to 15-20 minutes twice a day. The purpose of our gathering is to encourage one another each month in this sacred, individual practice, in the words of CC, § 2560, in “the encounter of God’s thirst with ours.”

There is a real need for individual packets of dried
milk and single serving size pork and beans, tuna
fish, Vienna sausage, or any other food item that
come in five ounce cans. These items are pre-
cooked and can be eaten directly from the can if
necessary. I am trying to figure out how to
package these items in something other than a
brown paper lunch bag since I like to put several
items in this bag for a complete day of food and
the lunch bags aren’t big or sturdy enough to hold everything. If you
have any ideas please let me know.
Those in need are so grateful for your gifts
of non-perishable food, clothing, and
toiletries.
