Time to put your gossip mags away – we’re going to test your knowledge of who’s who in the world of music, screen and sport! Kate Winslet? Ne-Yo? Zlatan? Who knows: because the name’s the game as we intro-duce our new Pop Quiz! Students listen as a number of famous people are de-scribed in three clues of decreasing levels of difficulty. The earlier students can identify who it is, the more points they get.

ContentsThe host starts by describing how the quiz works. A series of three clues (made up of words, sound effects or music) to the identity of each person is read out, and the students have to try to work out who he or she is. If they can answer after the first clue, they get 10 points; if they answer correctly on the second clue they score 5 points, while a correct answer on the third and easiest clue gives 3 points. The answers are given at the end of the show. Sample answers are Beyoncé, Carolina Klüft, Orlando Bloom, Homer Simpson, and Ronaldhino.

Purpose• To provide entertainment in an altogether English-speaking

environment. • To provide an opportunity for listening comprehension in a

framework where students feel at home and can comfortably strengthen linguistic skills.

Ideas for using the programmeAnswer sheet is available online.

Lead-inOn page 46-47 of the Student’s book is a picture of Kristian Luuk, Ebba von Sydow, and Eric Gadd, which can be used as an introduction to the subject of “celebrity”. Perhaps ask the class if they can identify them and say what they’ve done or achieved. Distribute the worksheets, which contain their answer sheets and instructions for the quiz. The quiz can be done individually or in pairs.

Focus tasksThe programme can be stopped after the last question, and students can either discuss their answers in groups before giving feedingback, or the answers can be discussed straight away as a class. The correct answers are given at the end of the programme.Let them add up their points – and see who’s won the Celebrity Cup!

AfterwardsAsk the students (in pairs or groups) to choose their own ce-lebrities and write down three clues about each one (in English, of course!). This can be done in class or at home. Their work can then be compiled and turned into a new quiz. Alternatively, groups can take it in turns to write and record a similar quiz each week.Quiz contest! Why not send the students’ quizzes into UR, and we’ll broadcast the best one next term! We’ll take anything from questions and answers on paper to recorded and mixed CDs. TipsCool news, gossip, games, quizzes and a whole lot more from the world of celebrities can be found at www.kidzworld.com under “Entertainment”. (For younger stu-dents)
