ENVIRONMENTAL WEEDS FLOWERING ACROSS THE RANGE

Tithonia diversifolia

A robust bush that can growing up to 3 m. The leaves have three or five pointed lobes and scalloped margins. Its large yellow daisy flowerheads are about 10cm across.

Native to eastern Mexico and Central America. Despite its common name, this species is not native to Japan.

It is widely naturalised in the coastal districts of Queensland and northern New South Wales. It is also present on Christmas Island. Also widely naturalised throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, including south eastern USA.

A common weed of roadsides, railway lines, creek banks, disturbed sites, waste areas, embankments, hillsides and neglected suburban lots in tropical, subtropical and warmer temperate regions.

Solanum mauritianum

Wild tobacco tree

A large shrub usually growing 1.5-4 m tall. The large leaves have entire margins and densely hairy undersides. One or two ear shaped leafy structures are usually present at the base of the leaf stalks. The mauve flowers are small.

Native to South America (i.e. Brazil, Uruguay and northern Argentina).

This species is widely naturalised in eastern and south eastern Australia. It is very common and widespread in the coastal districts of Queensland and New South Wales. It is also present in inland southern New South Wales, in south eastern South Australia.

A common weed of untended suburban areas, roadsides, disturbed sites, waste areas, waterways, open woodlands, closed forests and remnant rainforest areas.

Montanoa hibiscifolia

Anzac tree daisy

Perennial shrub up to 6m. Leaves are deeply palmately lobed, up to 25 cm long and 25 cm wide, dark green above and paler below, softly hairy on both surfaces, with a pair of lobes at the base.

Widely naturalised in the coastal districts of Queensland. Possibly also naturalised on Norfolk Island and in the coastal districts of northern New South Wales. Naturalised overseas in South Africa and on islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

It has escaped from cultivation to become weedy in savanna vegetation, river banks, gullies, in rainforest margins and on roadsides.

All three species are currently flowering along the Range and east to Nambour.

EASTERN WHIPBIRD

Psophodes olivaceus

Having mostly green plumage and living in dense undergrowth, the eastern whipbird is seen far less often than it is heard.

Its whip crack call is a characteristic of the moist forests in eastern Australia. The unusual feature of this call is that it is often performed by two birds calling in sequence, with one bird contributing the first part of the call and another giving the second part.

This so called ‘antiphonal’ calling involves great co-ordination between the two birds to give the call its familiar whip crack sound.
