POP Walk Thanksgiving! Our 18 th annual Walk for Parkinson’s and second-ever POP Walk, the People of Parkinson’s Walk, had an amazing turnout and grossed over $54,000 to fight Parkinson’s disease in the CSRA! That total includes over $32,000 from businesses! On top of that, in-kind contributions valued at well over $5000 were essential to POP Walk 2017 success. There are so many people and businesses to thank that it is likely we will forget someone in this effort, but here goes. We cannot thank enough the hard-working members of our walk committee and the walk-day volunteers who made POP Walk possible. Along with the folks we thanked in last month’s newsletter, here are more we don’t want to miss. Huge thanks go to Doyle Stewart, our DJ/MC extraordinaire. Thanks to the staff at First Baptist who made setup and takedown a breeze. The Navy Information Operations Command Georgia Choir and Color Guard provided a special atmosphere. The next few pages include people and businesses that helped make POP Walk successful. If you have a chance, thank them and give them your business. Public Awareness: Our great turnout and increased awareness is due in large part to all the volunteers who distributed flyers and posters, put out signs, and spread the word any way they could. Special thanks goes out to: our media partner, WJBF Channel 6, for running a PSA about the Walk and conducting a noon interview about the Walk with Mary Morrison; the Augusta Chronicle, for continually posting information about the event and the post-walk article and photos; Be Still Displays, for running Walk info on their electronic billboards; WAFJ, for recording and airing a PSA; WRDW News 12, for recording and airing two interview segments. Caregiver Corner:

November is National Family Caregivers Month: From the Parkinson’s Foundation: As a caregiver for a loved one with Parkinson’s, it can be easy to forget that your needs require attention too. Self-care is defined as any practice that relieves stress and encourages a healthy mind and body. Here’s 15 realistic tips for caregivers: 1. Eat healthy with less hassle, 2. Manage stress, 3. Exercise regularly, 4. Set limits and stick to them, 5. Reflect on the rewards of caregiving, 6. See to your own health needs, 7. Find activities you can enjoy with your loved one outside of care, 8. Drink plenty of water, 9. Socialize with people who uplift you, 10. Laugh, 11. Schedule breaks from caregiving and make them a priority, 12. Cultivate a mindfulness practice, 13. Dream, 14. Accept your feelings, 15. Practice being grateful. Find details for each tip here: parkinson.org/Living-with-Parkinsons/For-Caregivers/Self-Care-Tips-for-Caregivers

Post-walk Fun and Demos at the October Augusta Meeting: At the October 24th dinner meeting, 30 attendees enjoyed a slideshow of photos from POP Walk 2017. When asked for feedback on the Walk, a few attendees reported that the trike and CPR demos were outstanding. Next, John Smith with Gold Cross gave a hands-on demo of Hands Only CPR. Attendees tried their skills at performing Hands Only CPR. John gave us a tip: doing compressions to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive,” a hit song by the Bee Gees, helps you keep the correct rhythm. Then, Kim Summers, a PT with Georgialina Physical Therapy, demonstrated the LSVT-BIG technique. As a special treat, attendees received gift bags with goodies.

An Important Note from Our President, Tambra: The Board Members of the CSRA Parkinson Support Group are a very altruistic, talented, and caring group of folks. It has been a pleasure to be part of this team and to work alongside each and every member, to facilitate the success of our mission. With that said, I want to highlight one board member in particular: Joe Kelley has been an active board member for the past four and a half years, and has served as the Vice President, Director of Programs, a member of the Research Committee, and a member of the Walk Committee. On top of all the important responsibilities as Vice President, Mr. Kelley has also been serving as Director of Programs, identifying and securing speakers or entertainment for each monthly dinner meeting, setting up and taking down audio/visual equipment, introducing each speaker, and anything else necessary to ensure a great monthly dinner meeting. His involvement in the Research Committee and the Walk Committee is also an impactful contribution. Mr. Kelley has done an excellent job in juggling all these roles, and on behalf of the Board and the entire Support Group, I want to publicly thank him for all his efforts.

It is with mixed emotion that I announce that Joe Kelley has resigned as Vice President and Director of Programs. His contributions will be greatly missed in these roles, but this will allow him the opportunity to be reassigned as Research Coordinator, where he can focus all his efforts on this important area. Again, our deepest gratitude to Mr. Kelley for jobs well done, and I am excited to see what the future holds for Mr. Kelley and the support group! - Tambra
