T he Schopf family farm was one of the first dairy farms in Door County to have a milking parlor and they continue to be a leader in farming technology today. The farm was founded in Carlsville, Wisconsin in the late 1800’s, but it wasn’t until the 1980’s that Dennis and Roxanne established Schopf’s Hilltop Dairy. Since then, the farm has grown from 50 cows to a 575 cow dairy and now has a country store, educational tours and classroom, a viewing room for visitors to watch the milking process, a complete onsite ice cream processing center, and his and her employee locker rooms complete with showers and employee lunch room. Door County is a popular tourism destination because of its natural scenic beauty, rolling landscapes and quaint shops. The Schopfs have made a positive impact in their community by educating the public about farming practices, promoting the dairy industry and contributing to the local economy. This is a great accomplishment nowadays when large dairy farms can often be viewed negatively by non-farming neighbors and city dwellers due to the smells and fears of manure runoff contaminating water supplies. Manure handling is no small matter for a farm like Hilltop Dairy with a total herd size of over 800 cows. Dennis and his brother Steve Schopf have put their trust in Patz for handling the 25,000 gallons of manure pumped out of their barns each day. “We’ve been very satisfied with our (Patz) dealer so far and the price was competitive with other brands,” said Dennis. Hilltop Dairy uses two Patz Model 4444 Pit Pumps to transfer manure from their larger barn to a storage tank. They decided to install a gutter cleaner and Patz Model 1512 manure pump in their smaller, 15-year-old barn soon after they remodeled it. The Schopfs specified using Patz on this job based on the performance of the other Patz pumps and their experience with their Patz dealer, L&L Sales & Service, Inc. in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. “We trust what they do and like working with (L&L service technician) Frank,” said Steve, adding “Good service and our trust in the dealership played a major role in deciding to purchase more Patz equipment.” (Continued on page 3.) Door County is a popular tourism destination because of its natural scenic beauty, rolling landscapes and quaint shops. The Schopfs have made a positive impact in their community by educating the public about farming practices, promoting thedairy industry and contributing to the local economy. This is a great accomplishment nowadays when large dairy farms canoften be viewed negatively by non-farming neighbors and city dwellers due to the smells and fears of manure runoffcontaminating water supplies.

Manure handling is no small matter for a farm like Hilltop Dairy with a total herd size of over 800 cows. Dennis and hisbrother Steve Schopf have put their trust in Patz for handling the 25,000 gallons of manure pumped out of theirbarns each day.

The Zellner family has been operating County Line Farms inLuxemberg, Wisconsin, for decades, but it wasn’t until the

late 1990’s that Pat Zellner and his wife Barb took fullownership of the family business. The Zellners have three sons,Brad (17), Ryan (15) and Matt (11). Barb works off the farm, while Pat maintains the dairy operation with some help fromtheir sons.

The conventional barn, built in 1997, has two Patz Model320 Alley Scrapers and a Patz Model 8000 Pit Pump to handlethe manure generated by their 250 milk cows.

The Zellners built a new calf barn in 2004 for expansionand Pat says it has been a learning experience for him and hissons. Even the calves are learning something new as theyadjust to the new barn and get used to the free stalls.

Calves are grouped by age with their comfort in mind.Open sidewalls provide maximum air exchange while ridgeventilation allows excess heat to escape and creates a “skylight”effect inside the barn. The bright, open interior promotes a dryenvironment for the calves and keeps odor levels down. Theinstallation of a Patz gutter cleaner and manure pump furtherminimizes odors and provides a convenient method for cleaningstalls and manure removal.

“Mainly, it’s labor saving,” Pat says when asked why he

installed Patz in the calf barn, “but I also noticed that thecalves are staying cleaner, too.”

Manure can easily be scraped or hosed clean andcarried away by the Patz Model 400 Gutter Cleanerrunning safely below the covered gutters in the free stalls. The manure is then pumped out of the barn by a PatzModel 1512 Manure Pump to a storage tank. Pat enjoysthe convenience and reliability of his Patz equipment, as

well as the peace of mind knowing that his local Patz dealer isjust a phone call away.

Patz dealer Randy Vandenplas of Spartan Construction,Inc. in Luxemberg, Wisconsin, was awarded the contract thatincluded building the calf barn and installing the Patz manurehandling equipment on this project.

Dennis and Steve both agree that timesavings is the biggest benefit of installing theirPatz equipment. “Time is money,” says Steve.“We can put our hired help to better use …(thePatz) takes one man off the job to do somethingelse.”

That’s great for Schopf’s Hilltop Dairybecause there is definitely a lot of work to keeptheir staff busy. The corn mazebecomes “haunted” in October and the Schopfshave helped out local charitable organizationsby donating a portion of the proceeds.
