Population Density
• The average number of people living in an area
• Usually expressed a people per square kilometer
Population Distribution
• Where people live throughout the world
• People tend to live in places favorable to settlement: mild climates, fertile soil, adequate freshwater
Population Change
• Change in Population is based on these 3 factors:– Birthrate– Migration– Death Rate
Migration
• The process of moving from one place to live in another
• Push-pull factors• Immigrate: to move into a new country or
region (Immigrate = In)• Emigrate – to leave one country or region to
settle in another (Emigrate = Exit)
Fertility Rate
• The average number of children a woman of childbearing years would have in her lifetime, if she had children at the current rate for her country
• A fertility rate of 2.1 is necessary just to replace current population
• Worldwide average is 3.0
Infant Mortality Rate
• Number of deaths among infants under age one per thousand live births
• Improved health care and nutrition has led to a lower infant mortality rate

• How do indicators such as birth rate, infant mortality rate, death rate and fertility rate reflect the level of development of a country.
