MESSAGE FROM LOU GARRISON, PhD

Interim Director

We are pleased to provide you with the annual report of the University of Washington Pharmaceutical Outcomes Re-search and Policy Program (PORPP) cataloging the activities, scholarship, and professional accomplishments of the faculty, staff, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows. As you will see in reviewing this, PORPP continues to grow in num-ber and in the achievements of its talented and dedicated staff working collaboratively across a wide range of disciplines. As you probably know, we are beginning a period of transi-tion with the ascension of our longstanding Director Sean Sullivan to his new role as Dean of the School of Pharmacy. Under his leadership over the past 15 years, PORPP has been

established as one of the premier programs in this field. We aim to build on that foun-dation as we look to the coming years, including the selection of a new Director. We wish Sean continued success and look forward to supporting him in his new role. We should highlight a few of the more notable achievements of the Program and staff in the past year. Several of our faculty and students received prominent recognition. Professor Josh Carlson received the ISPOR Bernie J. O’Brien New Investigator Award. Professor Beth Devine co-led and was featured at the recent PHRMA Foundation CER conference. Professor Andy Stergachis was named the 2013 Washington State Pharma-cist of the year. Kai Yeung received the Best Student Podium Research Award at the ISPOR International Meeting. And, from the AMCP Foundation, Professor Sean Sulli-van received the Steven G. Avey award for sustained, exemplary and distinguished ser-vice to managed care pharmacy. This coming year, PORPP will welcome our third class of 70+ Distance Learning stu-dents enrolled in the Certificate in Health Economics and Outcomes Research (http://www.pce.uw.edu/certificates/health-economics.html). We have now trained over 120 students. Our faculty and alumni have been generous in support of the program during this past year. The last page of this report lists the PORPP donors for 2013-2014. We heartily thank them for their support. For this coming year, we are admitting another strong new graduate program cohort. Professors Veenstra, Devine, and Hazlet recruited our top candidates, who are profiled here. Also, I am pleased to welcome two new faculty members, Aasthaa Bansal, PhD, Research Assistant Professor, and Gary Lyman, MD, MPH, Professor. Finally, I want to thank Penny Evans and Paul Kraegel, our superb program and re-search coordinators, who help to make all of this possible.

The School of Pharmacy’s Biomedical Regulatory Affairs Master of Science (BRAMS) program admitted its first class in 2008 and will graduate its 100th student this coming year. An outgrowth of two long-standing certificate programs, Biomedical Regulatory Affairs and Clinical Trials, BRAMS is unusual with its focus on all medical products – biologics, drugs, medical devices – and draws students from both local industry and the Food and Drug Administration, as well as international students (Canada, China, Egypt, India, Japan, Jordan, and Taiwan). The MS degree includes a practicum, and is typically completed in two years. BRAMS faculty have been active participants in the on-going development of a national accrediting organization, Association of Graduate Regulatory Educators.
