and new partnerships will make our numbers stronger

Team and other sponsorships are robust and our financials are solid

We continue to invest a lot of money and labor into our fields to make

them the best in the area – Lyon Park is a desired destination for

tournaments and other local travel and club programs

PCYBL Travel program, especially summer travel, continues to be popular

and competitive with well over 100 travel games played this summer alone!

Coaching in PCYBL…

For Major, Minor and most of Rookie, coaching assignments will be set by

Wednesday, February 28th, in time for 2nd Coaches Meeting.

All coaches’ paperwork was due by January 22! Paperwork received after

this date may result in a spot not being available for you.

There is NO GUARANTEE that anyone will receive a coaching assignment.

Assignments will be given based on responses to questionnaire, past

performance, prior issues/complaints, recommendations and spots available.

All coaches will receive an email to let them know where they will be

coaching. If you do not hear from us, please call or text our league line, 914-

939-8619.

New for 2018…

Coaches Clinic – division specific clinics to ensure consistency with

instructional techniques and that all players will be taught and develop

baseball skills consistently.

Clinics demonstrated age specific drills for coaches to utilize in practices.

Clinics were held on:

January 9 – Tee Ball and Rookie January 10 – Minor and Major January 11 – Make up session for those unable to attend prior sessions

Attendance was better at older levels; pretty dismal for Tee Ball and Rookie

New for 2018…

Cal Ripken Baseball Coaching Education Program – all approved PCYBL

coaches must become certified by completing an online course –

“Coaching Youth Baseball the Ripken Way”

The online course is available on the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken websites

PCYBL will cover the cost of training for all approved coaches (we will

purchase the course in bulk and make available to you). We will provide

additional information at a later date.

FOR TONIGHT – PLEASE GIVE US YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS! We must have your email address (one you actively use and monitor) in order to assign the course to you through the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken website. You will receive an email directly from that website once the course is assigned to you.

Coaches become certified for life once the course is completed and passed.

You will NOT be allowed on the field to coach or to assist or in any capacity

unless and until you are certified!

The Coaches Pledge…

Very important and we take it seriously

ALL coaches and Board Members must sign the pledge

If any coach has a problem, please speak to a member of the board CALMLY!

Coaches who complain about the league to parents, players and other

coaches are breaking their pledge.

Please talk to us – we value your input and will respond!

The Coaches Questionnaire…

We know it’s not fun but it is important! We do review all answers Helps us get to know you and helps us select the best coaches for the children!

The Background Check…

Required by both Cal Ripken and Little League

Designed to protect the children – hard to argue with that

SSN is required – we can not run background check without it

If you receive notification that your name was matched – DO NOT PANIC!

This all has a purpose, and it is one of the things that separates us from

other organizations and is one of the reasons why our coaching is getting

better and our kids are getting better.

Plan ahead and review practice guidelines so your kids will stay interested and learn

baseball the right way – PCYBL Coaches Handbook

What Should Coaches Do During the Season?

Get a good team manager… One thing where doing it yourself is not easier!

Phone calls, paperwork, team events and raffles, etc. Allows you to focus on coaching – which is what you signed up for!

Notify children right away when you get your roster! The kids talk, and once one kid knows what team he’s on, they all need to know.

Opening Day – Monday, April 16th!

All Star Day – Saturday, May 12 - our biggest event of the year… we need your

help and your support! Please show up and keep your team on schedule and do what

you can to help.

Battle at the Boarder – our single biggest fund-raiser each year – we need your

help! Volunteer to keep score, help at concession, be a PCYBL ambassador…

whatever you can do to assist.

Awards Ceremony & Basket Raffle* – Saturday, June 23rd – complimentary

coffee, water & bagels, lots of activities for all kids; major fundraiser.

Major & Minor Coaches – PLEASE:

Stay in the dugout until time out is granted - this is one of the biggest and

most unnecessary violations throughout the year… it’s a standard baseball rule and we

need to follow it!

Rake and line the field after every game - everyone should play on a nice field,

not just the early games. The same coaches leave after every game without helping

and the same coaches always do the right thing. EVERY coach should help with field

maintenance!

Obey the rule about maximum number of coaches in the dugout each

game - it’s not a “dumb rule;” again, it’s there for a reason and it needs to be followed.

Remember to have your team clean out the dugouts - please leave the

dugout and field and the park clean when you’re done…

PLEASE help us enforce the rules….

Make your players tuck in their shirts and wear their caps the right

way…. don’t make a board member do it…. we don’t want to be the police and we don’t want to embarrass the kids.

Move parents and spectators from behind the dugout…. People

ignore big signs that say NO SPECTATORS BEHIND DUGOUT… please ask them to move… again, the board members shouldn’t be the only ones enforcing rules – we need your help!

Keep control over the players in the dugout – at least one coach should be with the children at all times.

Wear YOUR uniform shirt to EVERY GAME. We know you are volunteers but this is a part of baseball, and we will enforce it.

Read, understand, and coach by the PCYBL Mission Statement:

The Port Chester Youth Baseball League is committed to providing all of the

children of Port Chester an opportunity to participate in a baseball

program designed to enhance elements that are essential in total character

development.

We will stress effort and attitude over aptitude and achievement. Our focus

will be on education rather than ability.

Through our tutelage, we will encourage the children to display good

sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage, integrity and respect for

authority in the hope that we can help them become stronger, healthier

happier, well-adjusted boys and girls.

Page 14: Port Chester Youth Baseball League · 2018-12-11 · Port Chester Youth Baseball League 2018 Coaches Meeting ... “Coaching Youth Baseball the Ripken Way” The online course is

This mission statement determines everything we do and

every decision we make….

Please remember it when you are coaching your kids….

remember it’s about ALL of the kids… not the most talented

and not the least talented….

Another thing that sets us apart from every other youth

organization!

NEW for ALL OF PCYBL…

Change to Date for Determining Baseball Age – effective immediately for

all divisions and programs we offer, baseball age will be determined based on

age as of May 1st.

New USA Bat Standard – effective immediately PCYBL must implement and

enforce the new USA Baseball Bat Standard. This means that baseball bats that were

approved for use for the 2017 season and prior seasons will no longer be approved or

acceptable.

We must comply fully with the new standard for all PCYBL programs All bats must be marked with the USABat label. All bats marked with the BFP 1.15 will not be permitted to be used. All new bats that bear the USABat licensing mark will be permissible for play in the leagues and tournaments of the participating youth baseball organizations The Bat Performance Factor (BPF) will no longer be in effect. Umpires will check bats!

ABOUT EACH LEAGUE…

Tee- Ball (John Hollwedel, Commissioner)

Make sure the kids stay safe and have FUN!

At this age, we want them to learn to love the game and have fun playing it.

Coaches must be patient, organized and have a sense of humor!

Challenges – parents, grandparents, safety, where’s 1st base, how to hold a

bat… again, be patient and have fun with it!

Page 17: Port Chester Youth Baseball League · 2018-12-11 · Port Chester Youth Baseball League 2018 Coaches Meeting ... “Coaching Youth Baseball the Ripken Way” The online course is

Rookie (Jay Ostrowski, Commissioner)

Reminder of Rule Changes from 2017 –

Maximum number of pitches increased to 7 (was 5) Added option for player to hit from tee after 7 pitches (if player declines, the player is out). Added guidance requiring Coach to pitch from no less than half-way between home plate and the pitcher’s mound and to throw pitches overhand from one knee.

Focus on instruction… use practice scripts and drills.

Coaches must be patient, organized, know baseball and be willing to learn.

Teach the rules of baseball and how to practice fundamentals the PCYBL

way.

Challenges – parents, grandparents, safety, trying to do too much too soon… get them

ready for Minors while keeping it light and fun!

Page 18: Port Chester Youth Baseball League · 2018-12-11 · Port Chester Youth Baseball League 2018 Coaches Meeting ... “Coaching Youth Baseball the Ripken Way” The online course is

Minor (Rich Reyes, Commissioner)

Reminder of Rule Changes from 2017 –

Pitching machine speed and progression now specified in rules. Pitcher must keep at least one foot on mound and remain parallel with or behind chute of pitching machine until pitch has left the machine. Clarified rule on 5 runs per inning (always applies, even in 6th inning), complete games (all games played in their entirety, even if it’s “over” due to 5 run rule), fouling off 7th pitch (batter stays alive).

New Coaches – ask for help… board members are ready to assist!

Safety first – be careful with pitcher position.

Follow practice script and drills… it works! Mix up practices and drills to keep it fun and

to help the kids develop and be competitive.

Minors still about having fun – NO running up scores, arguing, poor sportsmanship!

Teach the kids love and respect the game and all players, coaches and umpires.

3rd Base Coaches – hold runners… don’t windmill!

Page 19: Port Chester Youth Baseball League · 2018-12-11 · Port Chester Youth Baseball League 2018 Coaches Meeting ... “Coaching Youth Baseball the Ripken Way” The online course is

Minor (Rich Reyes, Commissioner)

Only ONE extra base per play, no matter how many overthrows, errors, dropped balls!

Umpire’s discretion on when a play is dead… should be when ball is under control AND

in or close to infield. This is a judgement call and can NOT be disputed or argued!

Coaches must know the rules at this level.

Regular season games can end in a tie… 5 run rule applies in all innings, including the

6th… all innings should be played regardless of score.

Remember and follow rules regarding number of innings at each position!

Coaches must be patient and organized, know the game of baseball, be fair and treat

all kids equally.

Teach pitching to all capable players in practice: Pitching machine will be used this year, as always, because our program is for all kids, not just the 20% who might benefit from pitching We may introduce some pitching at some point during the season – TBD Teach pitching in practice to prep kids for summer travel and tournament play

Major (Chris Swallen, Commissioner)

Reminder of Rule Changes from 2017 –

Revised/clarified former EH Rule (see Major rules for details). Added “One foot in the batter’s box rule. Other minor changes/clarifications implemented – be sure you know the rules!

Be sure to develop pitchers & teach proper mechanics! Ask for help if you need it.

Major coaches must be committed, know the game, be disciplined and able to

discipline, organized, respectful of opponents and the game… and the PCYBL

philosophy and mission.

This level requires more baseball knowledge – pitching, game situations, rules.

This level is definitely more competitive – remember your coaches pledge and our

mission statement… have fun and be a good role model for the kids!

Other challenges… parents, grandparents, spectators by the dugout and other

distractions, safety concerns, varying skill levels and playing abilities, juggling playing

time, etc..

As always, PCYBL will assist with “over-involved” parents… just let us know!
