The“midway”wasexpandedthisyear:theScramblercomplementedtheFerrisWheelandtherewastwicethefunfortheyoungerkids.NewexhibitsincludedtheEastEndersCarClubwhobroughtacollectionofclassiccarstoPortUnionRoad.

PopularfeaturesincludedtheEnbridgeBBQcrewservingdelicioushotdogsandsoftdrinksatfamilypricesandtheTorontoServicesfireboatdelightingandamazingyoungandoldalike.OtherreturningfavouritesincludedHawkshadow,specialmusicalguestsanddisplaysfromlocalbusinessesandcommunityorganizations.

Thisyearwehadevenmorereasontocelebrate.CouncillorMoeserofficiallyannouncedthestartofconstructionforthenewGOTransitParkinglotontheeastsideoftheCommonalongtheDuthieSt.roadallowance.TherewasasodturningeventwithspecialguestsMayorDavidMillerandotherlocaldignitaries.

Staytunedfordetailsofthe2010PortUnionWaterfrontFestival,scheduledforJune12.

Port Union Waterfront Festival June 13, 2009 Whenacommunityhasabeautifulwaterfront,wefeeltheneedtoinviteourneighborsovertocelebrate.SuchisthecasewiththePortUnionVillageandthePortUnionWaterfrontPark.Thepathways,f lowingwaterfeature,playground,beautifullandscapingandWaterfrontTrailareannuallycelebratedatthePortUnionWaterfrontFestival.ThisyearitwasheldonSaturday,June13andhadanattendanceofapproximately6000people.

OverthetwoyearspanofthePortUnionStewardshipInitiative(January2008toDecember31,2009),wehavebeenveryluckytohavehadsuchanactivecommunitytoworkwith.TherehasbeenongoingsupportfromtheCentennialCommunityRecreationAssociation,theCityofTorontostaffatthePortUnionRecreationCentre,theWestRougeCommunityAssociationandmanyothercommunitygroups.

ThePortUnionStewardshipInitiativehasmeaningfullyengaged1,527volunteersinenvironmentalactivities.OneofourmajorgoalswastoplantasmanytreesaswouldfitalongthePortUnionWaterfrontTrail.Withthehelpof173volunteers,weachievedthisgoal–successfullyplanting600trees.ThevolunteerswhohelpedwiththisprojectincludedtheFirstHighlandCreekGirlGuidesandmanyotherswhoparticipatedinEarthDayin2008and2009.

Inadditiontoplantingtreeswehave:

• Plantedover200wildflowersinconstructedbedsatSirOliver MowatCollegiateInstituteandSt.Brendan’sCatholicSchool.

• Constructedandinstalled55birdboxeswithinAdam’sPark withtheFirstHighlandCreekGirlGuidesandSecond HighlandCreekBeavers.

• HostedtwoTDGreatCanadianShorelineCleanupswhere volunteerspicked-upatotalof18bagsofgarbagefromthe PortUnionWaterfrontshoreline.

• ParticipatedinthePortUnionWaterfrontFestivaleachsummer.

• ParticipatedinWinterfestatthePortUnionRecreationCentre.

TD Great Canadian Shoreline CleanupOnSaturday,September19,2009,acleanupeventwasheldatthePortUnionWaterfrontPark.ThiseventwaspartoftheTDGreatCanadianShorelineCleanup,anational,week-longeventthatwasinitiatedbytheVancouverAquariumin1994.Sincethenthiseventhasgrowntobecomethesecondlargestcleanupintheworld.

AtthePortUnioneventwehadfifteenenthusiasticvolunteerswhocameouttocleanuptheshoreline.WeconcentratedontacklingthebeachareaontheeastsideoftheHighlandCreekbridgeandthenworkedourwaybackalongtheshorelinetowardsthelookoutpoint.Wecollectedfourbagsofgarbageandtwobagsofrecycling.Afterwards,wehadapicniclunchtogethertoenjoytheviewofthenewlycleanedbeach.ThankstothePortUnionStewardshipInitiativeforsupplyingthedeliciousfood.We’realreadylookingforwardtonextyear’seventandhopetherewillbeevenlessgarbageonthebeachforustopickup.

Port Union 25th Anniversary Hike and PlantingOnthecrispSaturdaymorningofSeptember26,2009,agroupofpassionatevolunteersmetatthePortUnionWaterfrontParktodiscoverthewildlifethatlivesalongthetrail.Theinterpretivehikeexploredthebirds,butterflies,andmammalsthatliveintheareaandthenaturalhabitatfoundwithinthepark.

Afterthehike,allthirty-sevenvolunteersspentthedayplanting100nativetrees.ThisplantingwasthefinalstepintherehabilitationandnaturalizationofthePortUnionWaterfrontPark.Todate,therehavebeen600treesplantedalongthewaterfronttrailatthissite,contributingtothehabitatestablishmentinthisman-madepark.

Wehadagreatturnoutofparticipantsandasuccessfulcommunityhikeandplanting.ThankyoutotheCityofToronto,theCentennialCommunityRecreationAssociationandeveryonewhotookpartinthisfantasticday!

The Western GatewayThisprojectwillconnecttheeasternedgeofthePortUnionWaterfrontParktotheCityofPickering,creatingaseamlesswaterfronttrailbetweentheCityofTorontoandtheCityofPickering.ImprovementsontheeastshoreoftheRougeRiverwillincludenewstepsonthenorthsideoftherailwayandthereplacementoftheraisedpedestrianboardwalkonthesouthsideoftherailway.TheWesternGatewayprojectisfundedunderthePortUnionWaterfrontParkprojectinacostsharingagreementwiththeCityofPickering.
