The Thought for Today Every day is the dawn of a new error.
We Don’t Always Appreciate What’s in our Area
Since the floods in October 2016 bird watching and photographing birds has become very popular among bird watchers and photographers The photo shows two avid bird watchers/photographers from the northern suburbs of Adelaide busy photographing birds in the area. They heard from other bird watchers and viewed photos on various internet sites of the bird life in the Port Wakefield area which prompted them to investigate for themselves. The Birds of Port Wakefield Area, published by Paul Taylor of Balaklava, was of great interest to them as they picked out birds they had spotted in the area.
AMP’s Tomorrow Fund
is once again offering $1 million in grants to amazing Australians doing great things – and we would love members of your community to apply. Now in its fourth year, this unique grants program is open to individuals of all ages, walks of life and abilities. In 2016, AMP’s Tomorrow Fund awarded 53 grants to artists, athletes, inventors, social innovators, scientists, writers, disability advocates, musicians and more. What they have in common is a desire to give back to the community – be it through creating something special or inspiring others. AMP is now seeking more talented and innovative Australians who are working hard on a project or passion but just need a financial boost to take it to the next level. Grants of between $10,000 to $100,000 can cover a range of activities, including training, travel and equipment costs, living expenses, rent and research. While groups and organisations are not eligible, we would encourage you to encourage your colleagues and community contacts to learn more or apply online at ampstomorrowfund.com.au.
Applications open Monday, 3 April 2017 until 4pm (AEST) on 16 May 2017. This website’s Tips and tools section also includes FAQs, useful resources such as downloadable posters, fact sheets and a sample application. The website also includes profiles on our past recipients, known as AMP Tomorrow Makers, as well as short videos.

End the freeze! Help councils get funding back The Financial Assistance Grants are a payment from the Australian Government to local councils. The purpose of the grant is for councils to invest in maintaining services for local residents and ratepayers. Councils rely on this funding to provide their communities with much needed facilities and services including local roads, bridges, parks, swimming pools, libraries, community halls and community groups. The Financial Assistance Grants were frozen during the 2014 Federal Budget. During the freeze (and removal of Supplementary Road Funding) it has cost Wakefield Regional Council in excess of $180,000. State-wide it has cost councils around $90 million over the past three years. Ceasing the freeze was indicated in last year’s Australian Government Budget however, to date, the local government sector has not received guarantee grants will return in the upcoming 2017/18 Federal Budget. Help end the freeze by emailing your local Federal MP using the template available on the website https://endthefreeze.good.do/restoreindexation/email.

A Special Thanks
Thanks to NANCY HALLS and the bingo group

Media Release 16 March 2017 More Flexibility for Development in Wakefield Region Amendments to Wakefield Regional Council’s Development Plan have been approved, allowing broader options for development. Minister for Planning, John Rau, and the Environment, Resources and Development Committee have officially approved Council’s amended Development Plan offering more flexibility for development in certain areas. Several changes have been made within Port Wakefield. Council is now offering greater flexibility for building designs within the tourist accommodation zone, including the Port Wakefield Wharf. This will improve and modernize aesthetics for the growing town. Floor-levels for outbuildings, such as sheds and carports, have been reduced in some areas of Port Wakefield, resulting in less earthwork requirements. Furthermore, a parcel of land in Balaklava has been rezoned to accommodate future expansion of the Horizon Christian School, a well-respected co-educational Christian school located in Balaklava. CEO, Jason Kuchel stated, “There is huge potential for population and economic growth within our Council region. Amending development requirements to accommodate the area is another step in promoting these opportunities.”
