HAPPENINGS: Theme Camps Altered Prophets The Altered Prophets may or may not provide you with altered prophecies. Burn Haven Kick back and relax with some tea and cookies to start your day. Burn Haven is an open camp for those of you party animals that want that “touch of class” before the festivities. Camp Brew Labs Here at Camp Brew Labs we specialize in drinks that warm the heart, mind, and body. Mornings we will be brewing that special warm morning drug; Coffee. An Italian digestive that has a very lemony, smooth taste with a spreading warmth and a friendly kick. Thursday Evening we will be hosting Holly’s Birthday party. The theme is: “We can’t promise you much, but we can promise you Tacos and Butt Touches”. Come on by and grab a Bite, or a Butt, or Both. Saturday Morning we will be making Pancakes to enjoy. Come and get’em while they are hot. And the Cuddling Color Cove will be open to all to cuddle and color. Camp Firestarter Camp Firestarter has what you pyrochallenged fire newbies need! Small bundles of wax coated cardboard assistance will light your fire quickly and make you look like a pro. Don’t look silly with your limp paper matchstick. Find one of our gifting bags in the playa, grab a couple and start impressing your campmates! RangerBob and the minions do this as a public service and as an offer of unconditional gifting as prescribed by the Ten Principles. Light up and enjoy!

All week long I’ll be running around POrtalBurn, attempting to record all the sounds! (I gotta catch em all.) Please also write your name on the wristbands of minors (under 21) in your care. Failing to adequately supervise minors in your care is your fastest ticket out of POrtalBurn, as you will be immediately ejected without exception or recourse. The Nest also has a bar (complete with a refrigerator/freezer) that can be used for scheduled events. No smoking of any kind is permitted in The Nest. No permanent storage of any item can occur in the refrigerator. Leftover items are NOT a gift it’s MOOP. When The Nest is not hosting a reserved event it is open to all participants from 10am to 8pm. The same rules apply ANY items left behind are MOOP, not a gift. It is your personal responsibility to Leave No Trace. This cannot be emphasized enough. If The Nest is not handled responsibly, it will be closed and available only for reserved events. safety, when the pond is closed it must be devoid of all toys. We will provide an area for you to secure them so they don’t blow away. When you leave POrtalBurn, collect all of your pond toys. If you leave a pond toy behind, it is NOT a gift, it’s MOOP! Do not bring glass bottles or containers in or around the pond. Do not dump gray water in the pond. Do not use soap or other cleaners of any kind in the pond. The Pond ranges from 10’30’ feet deep. You can jump in from the deck of The Nest, or walk in. We are making a ramp to improve accessibility. Water shoes are advisable. It’s a natural pond so leeches are possible, though we don’t anticipate a problem. There are Koi and Trout living in the pond. They won’t bother you, please don’t bother them. The Pavilion: There is a pavilion connected to the lower level of The Nest. Since it’s near MASH, Sanctuary and quiet camping, please use the pavilion only as a low key space for folks who wish to enjoy it. No amplified sound is permitted in the pavilion. There are tables available to use. Please Leave No Trace. Water: There is no potable water available onsite. You need to bring your own water for any drinking, cooking or personal needs. There is nonpotable well water available that you can use to fill containers for your camp use. Ice and Supplies: There is no ice available onsite. Bring your own ice or plan to drive to the closest store to buy ice or supplies as needed. To minimize traffic in and out of the event, coordinated ice runs are encouraged. Be aware of ticks, do daily tick checks. Bring clothing appropriate for warmth and protection. Bring all water, food and necessities you need for the duration of your stay. Showers: A communal shower will be available near The Nest using cold, nonpotable well water. Any soaps and shampoos MUST be environmentally friendly, biodegradable and nontoxic. There are trees surrounding the perimeter of the event where you may find space to hang a personal solar shower, if desired. If you do, please be cognizant of water run off and anything that may affect the environment and other participants. Portal Potties: Same thing as a portapotty but cooler. They will be decorated and fancy! Remember, if it didn’t from your body, don’t put it in the potty! Single ply toilet paper only. Use them responsibly. Don’t make a mess. Don’t write on the walls. Clean up after yourself, and put the lid down after each use.

Electricity There is no electric service for Participants, with the exception of The Nest, which is to be used for Nest activities only. Other options for light and power are: solar lights, battery operated lights, generators etc. Because of drought conditions, please exercise extreme caution if using Tiki Torches. Any open flames must be monitored at all times. Generators: Generators are allowed on Hummingbird Hill, Falcontown and The Bufflehead. Please do whatever you can to mitigate sound and be considerate of your neighbors. If a neighbor is bothered by your generator, resolve it in a neighborly way. If you are able to share your generator power with your neighbors, awesome! Camp Fires: Burn barrels and elevated fire pits are permitted. All campfires must be at your campsite, raised off the ground, and monitored at all times. If you leave camp, extinguish all flames. Camps with fire MUST have a fire extinguisher or water bucket readily available. Be responsible and Leave No Trace. Any ashes must be disposed on in the designated ash dump. Due to drought conditions, please take every safety precaution possible. NO outside firewood can be brought in. The region is highly sensitive to the Emerald Ash Borer. POrtalBurn will provide wood for Effigy and Art Burns, and camp Burn Barrels. Fireworks and Pyrotechnics: Fireworks and Pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited. This includes anything that can generate 'stray' flames. If you are unsure if your effects fall into this category, contact [email protected]. Flame Effects: Do not use flame effects without our prior knowledge, or having received permission by the Fire Lead, to make sure your project falls within Fire Safety Guidelines. Information about your intended flame effects can be submitted to [email protected].

Fire Spinning (poi, staff, hoop, etc.) Fire performances will be permitted in ‘safe spaces’ and we look to the community to practice common sense fire safety procedures. Every fire performer is expected to have a designated safety, fire blanket and fire extinguisher. Given the dry conditions of the environment, we ask every fire performer to exercise top notch judgement, and avoid performing near trees or brush, or dry grass that may pose a hazard.

Effigy and Art Burns: The Effigy Burn is Saturday Night. There will be an Art Burn Sunday night. They will be amazing. Conclave: If you’d like see conclave happen, it’s up to you to help make conclave happen. Pack it in, Pack it Out: There are NO dumpsters, trash cans or trash removal of any kind onsite. Theme Camps are not responsible for your trash. You are responsible for every piece of trash you generate. Bring trash bags with you. Food waste should not be disposed of on the property it is not compost, it attracts wildlife. Avoid using glass containers. If you smoke, bring a portable ashtray. Manage your recycles. Remove excess packaging and dispose of it prior to your arrival. If you bring it with you, then take it when you leave. MOOP sweep your camping area after packing up to ensure you Leave No Trace. Rangers: Rangers are helpful, clearheaded participants and nonconfrontational volunteer mediators. They are not your cops and not your Mom. They are good people to find if you need help, or know someone who does. Anyone volunteer with a radio can find a Ranger. The Command Center can also radio a Ranger if one is needed. Medical Service: All POrtalBurners are expected to be self reliant and have all equipment and supplies necessary to care for their own first aid and medication needs. We will have a MASH camp, near the Pavilion, staffed with Volunteers who can assist participants with obtaining medical care should it be necessary. Rangers will also be on duty and can help facilitate getting medical assistance if needed. The Command Center can radio MASH or a Ranger if needed. The nearest hospital facility is approximately 15 minutes away: St.James Mercy Hospital, 411 Canisteo St. Hornell NY 14843 Volunteering: POrtalBurn is a 100% volunteer driven event… it cannot happen without Volunteers! Volunteers are needed to cover Gate, Greeting, Parking, Rangers, Sound, Medical, Sanctuary and Command Center. Please sign up at http://portalburn.com/volunteer/ or visit the Command Center onsite to cover any open shifts. POrtal Virgins: We realize that being a Virgin Burner can cause mixed emotions when coming to your very first Burn. Have No Fear; you’re gonna get “Lei’d”. You will be greeted warmly by our Virgin Acculturation Guides (VAG) at the Gate. They will educate you on our guiding principles to help you make the best of your experience. They will guide you towards the VAG center located in The Nest. VAG will be hosting games and events designed with the Burner Virgin in mind.

Sound Policy: If you have amplified sound you must apply for placement. Please make every effort to point sound to the South (away from the Nest). If you are asked by a neighboring camp to lower your sound levels, we expect you to resolve the issue together. If you cannot resolve the dispute, please get a Ranger. If you are asked by someone in an official capacity to adjust your sound levels, you are expected to comply. Out of respect for neighbors and POrtalBurners, please turn down sound between 2:00am and 10:00am to 74 decibels (measured at 50’ from the sound source). Any camp that refuses to comply with POrtalBurn Sound Policy could result in being shut down for the remainder of the event, or risk losing sound privileges for future events. Cell Service: Although there may be some dead zones, cell phone service should not be an issue. Photography and Video: You can take photo’s and video at POrtalBurn with consent. Do Not take pictures of people without their permission. Especially don’t take pictures of people in compromising positions without explicit consent. Silence is NOT consent. If you happen to unknowingly capture someone nude or indisposed, DO NOT post it online better yet, delete it. Pictures are fun, but respect for our community comes first. Accessibility: The event does not have paved roads or established pathways that can guarantee accessibility for wheelchairs or people who are mobility impaired. Areas of the site have rugged terrain and are sloped in some areas. We welcome all participants, and are taking measures to improve accessibility, however we cannot ensure accessibility to all areas of the venue. Local, State, and Federal Laws: All New York State laws including those regarding drugs and alcohol apply. POrtalBurn, LLC does not condone ANY illegal activity. While we are creating a temporary community with its own rules, this community coexists within an area of real laws. IMPORTANT: If you are serving alcohol YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CHECKING WRISTBANDS of anyone you are serving to be sure they are of legal age. This is worth repeating: If you are serving alcohol, you MUST check wristbands. DO NOT serve alcohol to anyone under 21 years of age. Period.

PRINCIPLES: The 10 Principles of Burning Man Radical Inclusion Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community. Gifting Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value. Decommodification In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory Experience. Radical Selfreliance Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources. Radical Selfexpression Radical selfexpression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual. Communal Effort Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction. Civic Responsibility We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.

Leave No Trace Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them. Participation Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart. Immediacy Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.
